An introduction to Mexican music for beginners:
I would recommend you to watch the golden era Mexican movies. Music was huge in movies back then, and Ernesto de la Cruz was inspired in both Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante, two very famous actors and singers from that time. Other singers had a more "comical" style and still sang, like Tin Tan (though they were more acclaimed as comedians). Other were only comedians, but were pretty good, like Cantinflas. Really, those 4 are very well loved by everyone. And Ernesto de la Cruz was partly what made me feel like this film was really accurate and inspired in the Mexico I know, unlike other movies like Nacho Libre, for example.
