Aliens (1986)
↳ Cinematography Appreciation
Love that Adrian Biddle.
I suppose it was inevitable that some people in Hollywood would remake Juan José Campanella’s exceptional Argentine thriller EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS / THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (2009), which won the Best Foreign Film Oscar for that year.
We can see Julia Roberts doing her plain, homely-looking woman thing here. It could be that she really wants that Oscar. Though I’m often not crazy about her project choices, I do really like her and occasionally she’s in a great film. Chiwetel Ejiofor is extremely talented and recently did a fantastic job in 12 YEARS A SLAVE.
Will this US remake be any good? I do like Writer / Director Billy Ray. However, the original film is not just a simple thriller about people, rape and murder. It is about the history of Argentina itself, and the personal stories parallel the national story. How did they adapt this film into something organic and as loaded and explosive as the original? We’ll see!
If it is fantastic and/or does well at the box-office, it could give Campanella a lot more work!
“Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall behind the scenes of 3 Women (1977)”
I saw this movie so many times growing up that the sights and sounds from it still jump around in my mind...
One of my favorite cinematographers (along with his 2nd Unit DP, David Burr) talks about shooting MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.
“Making of Mad Max: Fury Road from ACS Victoria with John Seale ACS ASC and David Burr ACS”
Two images here I chose to ring in the New Year. It is not imperative to see MAD MAX: FURY ROAD in 3D. This is cinema whether you slice it three or only two ways. How exhilarating it was last night to see these images that captivated me months and months ago come alive onscreen at (Mann’s) TCL Chinese Theater! Finally, a fantastically talented director (Is there any greater lover of BABE: PIG IN THE CITY than I?) tells an action fantasy story with rocking (or Rockatanskying as it were) imagination and verve and moving characters. I knew he could make this sing.
Thank you for meeting my expectations with the unexpected, George! I am inspired!
Japanese Television Documentary which aired around December 1982.
A really fascinating Japanese artifact on the life of Steven Spielberg in the 1980s after he made E.T. and POLTERGEIST and during the production and possibly the post-production of TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE.
“Cronenberg on Cronenberg”
John Ford & Alfred Hitchcock on “Cineastes de notre temps” (Hubert Knapp and André S. Labarthe, French Television, ca. 1965)
I realize this is a bit late, but I just saw this on a friend’s Facebook page. I’ve never seen this piece and I’m even in it at 1:22. You see me from the back after I’d finished SHARKNADO and was working on Mark Atkins’ ANDROID COP with Michael Jai White.

Zoolander (USA - Australia - Germany, 2001)
I’ve only seen this treasure once and there is no good reason why I don’t already own it...
