Ya know, he may not have been the fastest around the course, but he still completed all the obstacles when he could have easily been like, “nah” and told his handler to heck off.

Der art director, thank you very much for all the wonderful information given here. I have read many times about the importance of having a consistent portfolio, displaying only the best illustrations and aimed to the public/clients of interest. But for an artist who is still beggining and doesnt have a clear defined style yet, and whose drawings still have some problems regarding lack of skill, would it still be advisable to have a website portfolio? Or shall he post only on facebook/instagram?

Put your best work in your portfolio — the best work you are able to make right now. Then little by little you replace those works with better works. If you make a huge level up in skill, then you may need to weed out a whole bunch of pieces from the lower skill level and work a little harder to get your portfolio piece number back up. (10 pieces is a good target to aim for)

You can be getting work as you progress. Don’t hold back your work, own where you are in the process. You’re learning and getting better. No matter how far you get, you will always think you have further to go — that is what drives artists. So get used to having a portfolio and maintaining a website right now.

Make the best work you can. Show it off. Get better. Repeat.
