“ stageivitus? ” hanna repeated, smile on her lips “ that sounds serious. ” she teased, a light chuckle falling from her lips. then a proper laugh fell from her lips. “ what? you fell from like, total upright? jesus, was your face okay? ” she asked, amused by the entire situation. though smile faded a little, tilting head to the side slightly. “ seriously? aren’t you like a top dog around here or something? ” she asked, as if she didn’t know that claire was a bee.

“Yes. It’s catchy, if I do say so myself. Hey, I made a pun.” Claire was truly proud of herself, but then, it was also pretty easy for her to make herself laugh. “Oh, yeah, it was fine in the end. But for a moment there it was like -- you know when your life flashes before your eyes? That’s what happened.” Then she could only frown, shaking her head dramatically. “No, no, I love that part of it. It’s just like school itself, the classes and stuff. It’s so much trouble. I can’t be bothered with it. But my parents would freak if they knew I don’t plan on going to Yale, so. Even though they do have a great drama program.”

“She did. You can ask her.” He said overly confident as he rolled his shoulders. But he was caught off guard with how her mocking followed a photo on her phone. “What the fuck, Claire. You can’t just go through someone’s things, are you kidding me?” Knitting his brows together, he glared at her. “Not without a good reason most of the time. You just don’t wanna mind your own. – You can tell her whatever you want. She’s not gonna believe anyone’s word over mine. She doesn’t buy into gossip.” 

“Oh, I have. Every time I bring you up she talks about how much she values your friendship. -- I didn’t go through it, I stumbled into it. Accidentally. You can’t prove anything.” She shrugged. “Anyway. I’d love to mind my own business, but the thing is, you’re messing with the wrong people. And I happen to think my reason is better than your selfish one. -- You actually think she’ll side with you after everything you’ve done to Dalton? Everything you’ve said about her behind her back? Wolf, come on, I know you’re desperate, but surely you’re not that ignorant.”

“Oh my gosh. Of course not.” Dalton leaned his head down as he rubbed his hand against the back of his neck. “I don’t know. It just felt spontaneous, and like a rush.” 

“So you didn’t like it because it was too planned. You know what.” Claire nodded now like she finally understood. “I get it. You just need to kiss her. It’s time, I think. Normally I’d say don’t rush it, but you’re both so shy. If you don’t break the touch barrier now you probably never will.”

“Well… it’s not of what I did or didn’t want to happen. I guess I was expecting that same sort of feeling like when we went to that bar. It just didn’t get to that –” He shrugged, cutting himself off. “It’s no big deal.”

“The bar?” Claire narrowed her eyes. “What was special about the bar? And do not say it was because you got turned on.”

“ did you hear me when i said lie if it was boring? ” hanna asked, quizzical brow raising for a second before it fell along with a chuckle falling from her lips to indicate the words had been in jest. “ but i mean, you could probably stick with the exhaustion thing, just up it to chronic fatigue? or that thing where you just like fall asleep randomly? naro–? nardo– something? ” she tried aloud, trying to remember the word. “ whatever it is, gives you a reason to have to go lie down for a bit and miss a bit of class. ”

“Hold on! You didn’t hear the name yet. Stageivitis,” Claire teased laughing slightly. “Narcolepsy? Yeah, I tried that once when I got caught skipping. I just... fell. In retrospect it wasn’t that great of an idea because I nearly landed on my face and broke it,” she nodded, feeling oddly like she recognized the girl but not sure how. “I was actually thinking longer than a bit. This place stresses me out.”

Wolfgang narrowed his eyes, wondering what Claire’s intent truly was beneath all of this. “I didn’t have to convince her, she wanted to.” He tried to protest, but at her accusation, he rose a brow, feeling his stomach turn a tinge as he clenched his jaw. “You don’t know anything about that, so stop acting like you do.” He spat back pointedly. “You don’t have anything on me. Allow Cady to be the judge, and stay out of their business. They’re people, Claire. They’re not puppets. You can threaten me all you want, I’m not gonna bow down to you. So stay out of my way and I’ll consider not pressing Dalton for what you’re really hiding.”

“Keep telling yourself that.” Claire rolled her eyes. “I don’t?" Changing her tone of voice to mimic his, she continued. “Oh, Cady, after that whole lock in fiasco, I got this note in my locker. I’m so scared, I’m planning my funeral already. -- How is that going, by the way?” She interjected, pulling out her phone and showing him a photo of the note she’d found in his bag. “Are you seriously lecturing me about minding my own business? You, the psycho who terrorizes people on a whim? You know --” Clicking her tongue, she tilted her head to the side. “I’m getting bored. Clearly I made a mistake coming to you. I should’ve just gone straight to Cady. She’d probably wanna know her role in this whole plan of yours.”

“I get that everybody is really bummed about the musical,” Tilly didn’t, not really. She’d tried to be supportive, but the show had been a disaster long before that smoke machine and whatever had actually happened on Sunday. However, she’d clearly been happy that she’d gotten to see what she’d actually attended the show for, “But on the bright side I now have live footage of Blake and Eric trying to dance and it’s hilarious - that’s all that really matters.”

“Is it bad I’m glad it got canceled before Spencer’s solo?” Claire said with a shrug. Generally, she tried to be easygoing but nothing irked her more than being upstaged. Even if theater wasn’t her first love. “I think Blake and Eric were more comic relief than I would’ve been, to be fair,” she laughed. “A little unnerving, though. Don’t you think? Even if it was just a prank.”

“Hey, do you know if there are still cops lingering around the auditorium? I left my bag backstage, but they won’t let me in since I’m not cast or crew. I kind of really need it back.”

“I could probably get it for you. If you’re nice to me.”

Sighing, Dalton weighed telling her the truth and allowing her to be happy for the situation. Instead he shrugged, he was never good at fibbing. “I mean I’m flustered because it didn’t feel like that big of a deal. I think I did? It just… I don’t know. Maybe I expected something different.” 

“You don’t sound very sure,” she frowned. “Dalton. I can’t help you if you aren’t honest with me. What did you want to happen?”

the second she hears the school nurse close the door behind them as they leave hanna is swinging her legs over to the side of the bed and ripping back the curtain between herself and the other in the room. usually she wouldn’t be so bold but extreme circumstances called for extreme actions. “ so, ” she starts confidently, but quickly realising herself after she’s in too deep. well, no turning back now. “ what are you in for? and please lie if it’s boring. i’ve been stuck here since second period for fainting, i started reading paracetamol packets for entertainment. ” she says, holding up the packet in her hand as to  prove how extreme her boredom had gotten.

“Oh,” Claire says with a wave of her hand, seeming to suggest it’s not that serious. “I told my chem teacher I wasn’t feeling well. Something about all the hours of grueling work under stage lighting giving me acute exhaustion? Obviously he didn’t believe it, but he also doesn’t really care. I’m currently attempting to wear down the nurse until she writes me an excuse for the rest of the week. I just need to come up with a better fake illness,” she winks.

“She may have spent the day with him, but she spent the night with me. I don’t need a grip, I have facts.” He said with a smug expression. “What’s your hangup on playing the cupid role between the two again, Claire? I doubt she’ll wanna go on a second date with him, let alone prom.”

“Mm. And what’d you do to convince her of that, I wonder? Oh, wait. No, I know what it was.” And then she bit her cheek, smiling smug and widening her eyes as she leaned in. “You’re all bent up about that scary note. Or well, pretending to be, at least. Because you want her sympathy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really clever. But it won’t work. In the end, Cady’s a smart girl, and she’ll figure it out.” Finally stepping back from him, she crossed her arms. “Or maybe it is real and I’ve got leverage on you. Either way, I guess it looks like you better keep away from her. It’s really simple, actually. You’re a bad person. Cady’s a good one. Dalton’s a good one. They like each other, and you doing this whole dance just to get in her pants, as you call it... it’s pathetic. And whether or not I think you actually like her, which I do, it’s really rotten behavior. So. Stop walking around thinking you can mess with whoever you want, and maybe I’ll leave you alone.”

“But Claire.” Dalton pleaded as he hid his blush. “It was just a cheek kiss.”

She smiled, seeing him blush. But she didn’t stop there. Leaning closer and holding his arm, Claire nodded at him knowingly. “See! Look at you getting flustered over it. Love connection. Mark my words. You just need to loosen up a bit more, I bet. You did want to kiss her, right?”

“It’s not denial. I have proof. – What did they do…. he did?” Wolfgang narrowed his eyes, trying to think on what happened after their date, not during. Laughing more dramatically that necessary, he shook his head. “That’s not a real date. That’s a playdate.” 

“And what proof is that? That sad little ring you wear to make yourself feel like she’s under your spell? Get a grip, Wolf.” Claire rolled her eyes. “Anyway. I’m already planning their second outing. Somewhere romantic. So he can get a feel of how to ask her out for prom. You're not even going to that, are you? So sad. I’ll make sure to send you photos.”
