“To test out your skills. You ready?”
“My skills? The next full moon is in a week, shouldn’t we be preparing for that instead?”
“Where are we going?"
“The best of both worlds.” He offers a pale smiler before following her suggestion and buying both. “Can I get you anything?”
“Yeah exactly,” she replied with a shrug before shaking her head. “Oh I’m okay,” Clara said, lifting a water bottle of out her bag for a moment before tossing is back in. “Thanks for offering, though.” Clara paused for a moment before continuing. “Were you at the festival whhen the explosion happened?"
“Right…Sorry.” He shakes his head slightly, the ghost of a smile on his lips as he tries to remember how to properly converse. “I, uh, was craving something warm. Aren’t warm things supposed to be comforting, or something?”
“It’s okay,” Clara reassured with a shrug. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right. Maybe get both and see which one is more comforting.”
“I…Sorry, I forgot what I was going to order. A, uh, just a coffee, please. No - wait, I don’t drink coffee, sorry. Shit, sorry. A tea? Um, whatever kind you’ve got. Please. I don’t care what. Just black is fine. Thanks.”
“I don’t work here actually, but how about some water instead? If you really can’t decide.”
Looks like I’m not going to work for the next couple of days.
“What happened? Was your job near the explosion?
“My sister thinks I scream like a little girl, I think I need to work on that. Definitely, I mean…most of the year I’m in college so I don’t get to see them as much. But every summer is a reminder that I should spread my wings and be free bird. It’s why I’m working anyway.”
“Well I think as your sister, it’s her job to make fun of you and say you scream like a girl. But if your mom was scared too, well I might just believe her, sorry. What are you studying? I finished college, but I went to Dalhousie so I never really got to go away. Do you like it?”
“It’s not a problem,” he smiled as he lead her down the hall. “Nice to meet you, Clara. I’m Winston,” he replied, extending his hand for her to shake.
“Are you sure? Because I definitely interrupted you at the worst possible time.” Clara chuckled. “It’s nice to meet you as well,” she replied, shaking his hand. “Have you lived in the building for long?”
“We’re doing this, Clara. This’ll be the best baking weekend in the history of baking weekends.”
“You can say that again. I’ve been wanting to make these for so long now!”
“–and it’s okay to be scared. I’m even still scared at times,” Celene added before she went on to listen to Clara explain what exactly happened to her. She couldn’t believe it. “—that’s… horrible. I’m so sorry, Clara…. he had no right to do that to you. Daughter or not…it’s never right.”
“Have you ever felt like your entire world is falling apart, and you can’t do anything to fix it? Like it’ll just keep getting worse and worse, and it won’t ever stop?” Clara asked, as if that was even the proper way to describe how she was feeling. “He’s dead to me. I don’t even plan on going back there.”
“No, thankfully.”
“Thankfully? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You will.”
“Quick question though that I still don’t quite understand.. – did you not ever question why your hearing or sense of smell was excellent? Because if I thought I was human that would of freaked me the fuck out.”
“Well I never had any reason to believe it wasn’t normal, Caleb. It’s not like I had my mom and dad to tell me otherwise.”
“Good point. I’ll help you, Clara. I can’t promise you it’s not going to be hell though.”
“I know. But I need to figure all of this out.”
“My instinct is to be mean to you.”
“I’m sorry? Have we met?”
“You’re asking me? We both know that’s a horrible decision.”
“Well who else am I supposed to ask?”
“ Right you are, but as a prize for winning a bet. I can get you ice cream right now. “
“I can always think of something else. Would you?”
“I don’t know. My mom thought I had cut my finger. I don’t really blame her. Then she said she’s gonna kick me out of the house if I ever scare her like that again. I think it’s time to move out anyway.”
“You’re right, though. I’ll just get if fixed.”
“That bad? Wow, you must have quite the scream. Maybe it is a good time to move out then, you shouldn’t be scaring your own mother like that.”
“It shouldn’t be too hard. Water damage happens all the time.”
