Okay, one thing about the Backrooms movie that I fucking ADORE but I don't see much people talking about is the recording Clark hears the first time he enters the backrooms which is played multiple times again throughout the film.
At first listen and to most people, it's just rambling. You'll think "Oh what a great way to set an eerie atmosphere". And you're not technically wrong. But, when you listen more closely, you'll find that it's actually a collection of human languages, greeting people.
It's the fucking Golden Record, people. The first comprehensive record of humanity ever sent out into the universe.
And when you combine that with the cardboard stand that the recording is playing from: which is Jesus as a shepherd, the meaning of this could be interpreted in two ways:
1. It's ASYNC simply trying to deliver a message to whatever entity the backrooms is. That they're trying to communicate with this unfathomable eldritch entity, with what the human race decided would be an alien race's first impression of them, that's full of optimism, kindness and positivity. And the figure used to convey that is, of course, one of - if not - the most famous characters in human history. Preaching about friendliness to an unfriendly environment.
2. It's ASYNC establishing beacons for their employees. We know ASYNC set these cardboard stands up, and we know what they're connected to. Playing a collection of unfiltered human greetings for audio guidance, and using Jesus as a visual relief. "Come to me, those who are tired and weary." Yeah, you're safe. Humanity's here. You'll be fine.
I'd like to think that both of these interpretations are true. And it's so devastating beautiful when you think about it.
