Clark didn’t risk his life for a dog.

He risked his life for his cousin’s happiness!

Probably just a headcannon as it’s not confirmed, but Kara is already a depressed mess, partying and getting drunk to cling onto whatever happiness she can given her whole people were genocided. Krypto is the last living creature besides Clark that she has left from Krypton.

Clark wasn’t livid that Lex stole a dog. He was livid that Lex was taking away his cousins happiness directly. You saw how happy Kara was, letting the dog jump on her and be a chaotic mess. She loves him. Clark knew if anything happened, that might be Kara’s last straw.

Yall if I think about Kara for too long I’ll cry, but I haven’t stopped thinking about this since it was revealed that Krypto was hers and I’ve seen no one else talk about it.

kal’s powers are the last gift of his first home. kara’s powers are the first gift of her new one.

kryptonian powers, to clark, mark the difference between humans and kryptonians for the first chunk of his life, long before he ever begins to understand his home culture or meets others like him. he looks human, he’s treated as one. his powers are the only thing that sets him apart (culture too, but that’s something he won’t uncover for years.) so those powers become his only tangible connection to his people. he has never existed as a kryptonian without them. to him, they are something normal for kryptonians. it's what ties him to krypton, because they’re the one thing kryptonians have that humans don’t. at least as far as he understands. he doesn’t yet grasp that on krypton, his people didn’t have powers either.

kara, on the other hand, lived as a kryptonian without powers. earth is where she first experiences them when she was a teen, and because of that, they don’t feel inherent. they feel foreign. gaining those abilities is what makes it undeniable that she’s no longer home. because on krypton, she lived a life without powers.

clark's powers come from his kryptonian biology. kara's from earth’s yellow sun.

powers remind clark that he’s kryptonian. they also remind kara she'll never go home again.

they addressed the whole stupid schtick people do about super “girl” once and for all when they said supergirl isn’t because she’s a girl who is a hero, it’s because she is a hero for girls

it’s about a movie that says to be a girl is to be treated as an object, a commodity, goods, and also says that girlhood is something that is murdered not grown out of, something stolen not softly kissed farewell at a beautiful coming of age, it’s something that can be gone at the age of thirteen while someone’s full grown adult cousin can still be “young”, Supergirl is a film about the grief thats held inside and the anguish at losing that girl, at her being ripped away by the cruelties of reality and the desperate ways we cling to the preservation of others, to protecting those who come next, because it’s a generational story across planets, across histories, across cultures

I remember right after the Superman movie come out everyone was making the “Clark saved Lex’s life by saving Krypto before Kara ever found out” jokes and its absolutely fantastic to me how supergirl 100% confirmed that to be true. Lex doesn’t even KNOW how lucky he is that he got the emotionally stable super

kara doing all of that for her dog is completely understandable btw. like on a surface level yeah most people would go to hell and back if their pet was unreasonably injected with a lethal dose of poison, but krypto is her only connection to her home other than clark, and one of her main sources of comfort after everything she went through. like he was a raggedy stray who ran up to her and her only during her moms funeral where she instantly picked him up and took him in, stuck with her when her father sent her to earth, kept her company on a planet where she was grappling with her sudden superpowers under the yellow sun and her only living relative spoke a language she couldn't understand at the time, and went with her as she travelled from planet to planet to drown her sorrows, and you're telling me you wouldn't go berserk for that dog if you were her??

"home is wherever you are, buddy"? yeah, yeah it is

To me, the most compelling scene in the new Supergirl was when Kara speaks with her father after seeing that he is making her an escape pod. The dialogue is in Kryptonian. And that is the most poignant and elegant dialogue in the film to me. Kara's lines and the emotion put into her saying to him, "I am only one tiny life," and her calm, clear articulation of her vision of herself being allowed to die beside her people and her mother and father was so profound and existential. And when he explains why they need to her live, you know she would agree. The price, the sheer weight, the endless gravity of that is so obvious. I am honestly not used to that depth in these superhero films. Both her desire and that of her parents felt so authentic. That conveyed tragedy and profound love. An impossible situation. A critical, defining experience. That was the heart of her character to me. When she flew up into space to scream in silence, that was a compelling image. That dialogue, though, hit me deep in my soul. This film would have been worth it for that exchange alone for me. I just can't think of anything I've seen that was like that before.
