It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.
i never really got it when people made posts about light pollution and seeing all the stars for the first time and crying. i always assumed that everyone has gone on a road trip to a bortle 1.0 place and seen stars like that, and it's fantastic, but not like life changing. and then i went to europe last month and was in a mountaintop village of like 300 people and could see about 5 stars in the sky. like fewer than i can see from my home in a big metropolitan city.
my apologies to the non-africans, i did not realise how fucked your sky is
Without fail
This also applies to celebrities that white ppl perceive as white or close enough to whiteness (e.g. East Asians)
Without looking them up, ask if you know these ppl and why Iâm putting them on this post.
Letâs add three more to the list
There are a number of ppl in the tags stating that they donât follow or pay attention to celebrities to which I have to say the following points
Youâre missing the point of this post, which is that Black artists that are either openly LGBT and/or talk about their experiences are often overlooked when âiconsâ of the LGBT community are brought up (Taylor Swift for example, is lauded as an icon)
These arenât just nebulous celebrities that are famous simply for being famous, these are mostly musical artists I picked that put something out into the world and have had discussions of their various experiences that influences their art.
If you really donât pay attention to celebrities than youâre probably not the people Iâm referring to in the original post and probably didnât need to announce your supposed lack of knowledge about very famous Black artists.
People legitimately think there was no criticism of the Harry Potter series before her TERF/soft holocaust denier era and I'm sorry to tell you but people were criticizing the Cho Chang banking goblins werewolf-AIDS metaphor elf emancipation is silly series years before Joanne's public turn to transmisogynistic chauvinism.
There were things to criticize of the series.
oh those druidsâŠ
stop letting miserable people on the internet convince you that you must have a concrete, well-constructed opinion on everything that has ever existed.
everybody say thank you Marcus Aurelius
Tomska going hard on Twitter again.
It's the way it was a simple, objective statement. White allyship 101. "White trans ppl can be oppressors too." Yes. Because Whiteness brings systemic power over their peers of color, even if you are in some way marginalized yourself. Queerness does not cancel out racism. We've talked about this. We've talked about white privilege and what it does and doesn't mean. These were conversations everyone swore they were having in 2016. đ And now a blow up of fragility on par with the conservatives we're supposedly up against together. What even.
It also deeply bothers me how many people pull the "okay now ask the average African American how they feel about gay and trans people" as a gotcha, to try to act as though Black people specifically hate and are oppressing queer and trans people (and as if we just, AREN'T those things too).
Buddy ask the average White American how they feel about gay and trans people, since we're taking the census and the piss. Hell, look at the people in charge currently pushing anti trans and anti queer legislation and tell me how they identify. Look at the racial demographics of our last election and tell me who you think is out here going rah rah for the gays and theys.
The audacity to suggest that my entire community is homophobic (I.e., you spend zero time around Black queer and trans folk) but somehow yours is worthy of a closer, more nuanced look... Really some OG white supremacy, actually! "Those savages, they don't understand things like gender and sexuality, they're just angry uncultured brutes!" -mentality shared between 1700s race scientists and 2026 You, apparently.
Some folks was really out here lying with those #BLM pins đ
While we are at it I need nonblack people to stop saying âYNâ and âđ„·đŸâ just to get around saying antiblack racial slurs. Yes that includes that stupid shit where white people go âooh but I said nega not-â I donât give a shit. You know damn well what you meant. Fuck off. Itâs a insta block from me for anyone who does this shit and think itâs funny or whatever donât pmo.
And before someone fucking says âerm are you referring to the fanfic / shipping term? How is your name offen-â obviously no Iâm not referring to that and anyone who is using it to mean âyour nameâ types it with a slash -> (y/n) *NOT* âynâ. Like. I need nonblacks to stop randomly regurgitating aave they see or hear without knowing what it fucking means and misusing it to hell and back thinking itâs cool/ trendy/ or something worthy of mockery. It means young nigga. Stop fucking using it if youâre not black lol
People wanna pretend it was all in good fun and only got racist afterwards (if they'll even acknowledge it ever was racist) meanwhile some of the earliest TikTok making clanker jokes were skits that were just "racist dad hates his daughter's black boyfriend" only the boyfriend is a robot instead, and before that, these exact same kinds of jokes were circulating the Star Wars fandom for over a decade
They want all the "fun" of being blatantly racist and provocative, but don't want any of the reactions you'd get from someone watching you being blatantly racist
i am a SUCKER for characters who start out as copies of other characters but eventually become their own people, their own identities, completely different from who they once reflected
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
Just so weâre clear, if I point out that you did something racist, thatâs not the same as me thinking youâre irremediably terrible. You did a racist thing.
You think you donât do racist things, homophobic things, etc? You do. I caught myself in fat phobic and homophobic lines of thinking/speech just this morning. Iâm fucking gay married. Nothing disqualifies you from acting in a way that reflects the society you exist in. We are obliged to fight it. Why not fight it in honesty and with camaraderie?
I think trans women should be allowed to win competitions without being used as proof that trans women are âdominatingâ womenâs sports and I think trans men should be allowed to have big roles in media without being used as proof that trans men benefit from male privilege. I think trans people should be allowed to succeed in life without being used as a way to claim that cis women are inherently the most disadvantaged, when usually those trans people fought just as hard (if not harder) to get where they are than their cisgendered peers. I donât like how trans people have to fail in order to convince two-bit feminists not to attack us for a privilege that we donât have.
