Alexa nodded, letting out a small tentative breath. It wasn’t just Cleo who had made her feel like this– the list was too long to count at this point. Feeling better was easier said than done; Cleo hadn’t been in a position of facing as much betrayal as Alexa had, though she wasn’t going to go on about that to Cleo. The point was that as much as Alexa would love to just feel better, she had been torn down by too many people too close to her to be able to just flip a switch like that. “Okay.” She answered softly, not quite sure what else to say as she didn’t want to argue.

“Okay,” Cleo responded back with a small nod. She managed a small smile at the girl. She knew things weren’t really resolved, but they at least seemed slightly better than before, and Cleo had said her piece. “Well, I guess I’ll let you get some rest,” she ended, biting slightly on her bottom lip. “And if you, uh, ever need anything,” she scrunched up her face. “I mean, I know you have other people you’d go to before me but,” she shrugged. “But you know where to find me,” she concluded awkwardly.

“Do you feel better now that you did?” Alexa asked, not harshly, but honestly sadly. This didn’t sit right with her and even though a part of her missed Cleo more than anything, there was a bigger part of her that guarded her from people that had hurt her. “Because I don’t.” She told weakly, her voice cracking a bit.

Cleo considered the question for a moment. “I feel different,” she settled finally. “Not better, exactly, but different,” she shrugged a little. In the end, she wasn’t really surprised that this hadn’t gone well. She had never been good with her own words. Or at being her own person. “I’m sorry for that,” she responded, her own voice a little gravelly. “I want you to feel better. Because none of it was because of you and if you take anything away from this it should be that. It was all just... me and my insecurity and,” she sighed softly. “I’m not good at this stuff. Being in the public eye. I never was. But that doesn’t really matter,” she shook her head. “What matters is I hurt you and I don’t want you to have to carry that around anymore.”

Alexa sucked in a breath, once again listening to Cleo. She couldn’t help but feel a sting at the words coming from the other’s mouth. Alexa thought Cleo would’ve known her better than to assume any of that about her, and it hurt to know that she had. The apology wasn’t exactly helping in the way Cleo intended and Alexa was a bit too overwhelmed with other hurt at the moment to add this on to the list. “It took me getting kidnapped for you to realize I matter to you?” She finally asked, biting the inside of her cheek. “You really don’t remember how you’ve treated me the past few years, do you?”

“Th-that’s not what I meant,” Cleo responded, shaking her head softly. She wasn’t coming across right here at all. She took several steps back so she was up against the door and she reached behind her back for the doorknob. “I do remember, that’s the problem,” she said softly, not looking at Alexa anymore. “I came here to apologize and now I’ve done that, so,” she glanced at the girl. “Unless you want me to stay for some reason I’ll go.”

Alexa bit her bottom lip, nodding at Cleo’s words. “You don’t have to apologize just because of what happened to him.” She told softly, not wanting anyone’s pity. Truth be told, Alexa was never going to be okay with what happened between her and Cleo. They had never had a falling out and she would never get why Cleo said all she did to the press, but Alexa had learned to live with the weird tension between her and her former best friend.

“No--” Cleo started, taking a step forward before stopping herself. “No, I know,” she finished, recomposing herself and letting out a little huff of breath. “This isn’t because of that,” she said. “I mean, obviously all that opened my eyes to a lot, but it’s not because of that.” She swallowed, trying to process what she was attempting to say enough to not mess this up, a feat that was rather difficult for her. “Look, I’m so bad at this stuff. Obviously. i have no idea how to, like, say what I’m feeling. That’s how we got into this mess between us,” she was speaking rather animatedly with her hands, a nervous habit she’d had ever since she was a kid. “I got jealous and i got insecure and I said a lot of stupid stuff because it felt like I was always gonna be compared to you and you were outgrowing me and I didn’t want you to just leave me behind,” she let out a little sigh. “But you’re the only person who’s always been there for me and I--” she was choked up and couldn’t quite finish. “You matter to me,” she attempted, lamely.

Alexa’s face almost instantly scrunched when she saw Cleo walk into the room, half in confusion and half in a bit of disbelief. Hearing her words, Alexa nodded taking them in– well half taking them in as she was still in a pretty dazed head space. “Okay.” She finally breathed out after a minute or so of silence. She wasn’t sure she believed Cleo or if this was just a thing to clear the other’s conscious, but she definitely didn’t want to argue.

Cleo scrunched up her own face in return. She could sense well enough that this wasn’t going well. “Alexa,” she said softly, still keeping her distance from the girl, not wanting to overstep her boundaries more than she already had. She wanted to go on but she wasn’t sure how, so she just shook her head. “I’m sorry,” she resolved. She opened her mouth again to speak but closed it just as suddenly. “I’ve been a bad friend and you don’t owe me anything,” she concluded. “But you were my best friend and I miss that. I get if you don’t wanna be friends again, but if you do, I’m here.”

Alexa was fine. She assured everyone of that on the ambulance ride to the hospital. She assured them all at the hospital. As she was checked out and on the car ride home, she assured them. Even after hearing everything that had happened when she as gone, she still assured them. Alexa was fine. Or so she wanted everyone to think. Maybe it was just easier if she was fine. The body guards outside her entire lake house seemed to tell a different story. Alexa sat inside her room, sitting with her thoughts for the first real time alone since she had been found. She was almost in a dazed state, not wanting to think about what had really happened to her. However, her thoughts were interrupted with a sudden knock on the door. “Come in.” She called, not thinking much about who it was, though making she to hide any pain she was feeling in her voice.

Cleo was thinking clearly-- or almost clearly-- for the first time since Alexa had been reported missing. This was the hardest thing she had ever been through, and she couldn’t imagine what it had been like for Alexa. She wasn’t sure she even wanted to know what had happened the last three weeks, but she knew that she needed to see her ex best friend. The thought of losing her without having ever apologized had nearly sent Cleo over the edge and now that Alexa was back, she finally had an opportunity to make up with her. “Hi,” she said softly as she entered the room, and her eyes teared up just at the sight of the girl. “Before you say anything,” she started suddenly, wanting to catch the girl before a fight broke out. “I wanna say I’m sorry. And I’ve missed you. Not just--” she broke of, letting out a little sigh. “I miss us,” she confessed.
