So I was listening to the Eddie Begins episode of The Buddie System and I had a brain blast of my own.

Why do Helena and Ramon want custody of Christopher? Eddie accuses them of wanting a 'redo' but why would it be different this time? They clearly had no intention of changing their behaviour. Then it hit me.

Helena is a narcissist (and Ramon either is also a narcissist or her enabler). Narcissists often like kids, cause they get to be in charge of them. Kids have to do what you tell them. It's when those kids become teenagers/adults that the cracks show, because that's when they start to push back and try to find their independence. A narcissist takes any disagreement with their opinions or plans for the child as a personal attack and the relationship sours (which is probably what happened with Eddie).

Since Chris has CP, Helena and Ramon (at least subconsciously) see Chris as someone who will always be dependent on them, and therefore someone they will always be able to control. He wouldn't be able to push back because they have all the power. (They'd be surprised when they eventually found out they were wrong about this.)

They lost control of Eddie, he became his own person and made choices they disagreed with so they wrote him off. Chris is their redo because they believe they would be able to control him into adulthood and make him into exactly who they wanted him to be.

In conclusion, narcissists suck.

…how has it been so long since I’ve done an update? Well, things have been busy…end of the semester, several Academic Projects that all had deadlines around the same time, one of the worst teaching schedules I’ve had in years, and resultant exhaustion…

…but! “Quest for the Elf King’s Sword” is out now!

This is my MM novella for this year’s JMS Books anniversary – the theme is the 1980s, and so I had a ton of fun with a story loosely inspired by some of my of-the-era elf-punk fantasy influences: Labyrinth, The Never-Ending Story, Mercedes Lackey’s SERRAted Edge & Bedlam’s Bard novels, very early Tanya Huff, Rick Cook’s Mall Purchase Night (slightly too late but the right genre!) (also the title is a Walpurgis Night pun), some Barbara Hambly, some specific Terry Brooks, and so on!

Even better, I actually had fun writing this one – I’ve been so busy and so exhausted that I haven’t had much creative space left, but this story just came together, and I even started little bits of a sequel for them, and it feels so good to have the words turn up and flow outward again. I hope that is a good sign.

Tim could've just not said that and we'd be analyzing the meaning behind it and drawing connections and tying it to larger Eddie plots and character development. but no. they just didn't have a plot for him

Today I came across a discussion where people were mentioning different authors and the impact they've had on the fandom, and it gave me the idea for this post.

When I first joined the X-Men fandom on AO3, one of the first things I noticed was how blessed it is with incredibly talented writers and truly wonderful stories. So I started thinking about which authors have shaped the way I write and given me some of the most meaningful and joyful reading experiences — and I decided I wanted to pay tribute to them.

So here's this post.

I'd love for everyone in the comments to name the author who makes your whole world stop when they post a new story. The one whose name in your inbox can make you drop everything you're doing — whether that's a car trip or even giving birth to your first child — because you just can't wait a second longer to read it.

Of course, it doesn't have to be the only author you love (I have quite a few on my own favorites list), but the one who, when you read them, makes you feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
