65/100 days of productivity
a recap of my summer!! i managed to get a lot of research/writing done, and even started working on a journal paper as well! I'm definitely not a summer person, but I somehow managed to survive the heatwave - I'm so ready for the well-deserved vacation starting tomorrow :)

Expressing intent: ~려던 참이다
This expression is used to express the fact that not only had the speaker been intending to do the very thing the other person is suggesting, but that he or she was just about to do it at that very moment or intended to do so very soon. It can only be used with verbs.
커피 한잔 마시려던 참인데 같이 갈래요? I was about to go grab a cup of coffee, would you like to come?
사장님이 들어오셨을 때 퇴근하려던 참이었는데. The boss came in just as I was about to leave work.
불을 끄려던 참인데 갑지기 소리를 들었어요. I was about to turn off the light when suddenly, I heard a sound.
The form ~려던 참에 can also be used at the end of a clause followed by another clause.
집에 돌아가려던 참에 걔가 드디어 나타났어. I was about to go back home when he finally showed up.
맛집에 들어가려던 참에 친구가 우연히 만났어요. As I was about to enter the restaurant, I met a friend.
Difference between ~려던 참이다 and ~려던 참이었다
~려던 참이다: the speaker was just about to do the action at that very minute.
~려던 참이었다: the speaker had already intended to do the action before the conversation started but was just now about to do it.
Hey! I am studying for the TOPIKII exam and I love following your blog, I'm just curious how you choose to study grammar? Do you do it by grouping similar patterns together or just randomly? Thank you 💖
Hi there! So when I first started learning grammar, I just started with the basics. Past, Present, Future. Then when I became used to that, I wanted to learn how to connect sentences. I will say this before I continue: I don’t have all the grammar that I know on my blog. My biggest tip for learning grammar (advanced or not), you have to do it. It’s boring, you get tired of it, and it’s time-consuming - but if you’re serious about learning Korean (or any language) you have to do the boring stuff.
ALSO!! Best of luck on your TOPIKII exam!! I am very glad you have deemed me as a helpful and useful resource, and I wish you success on the exam :)
How I, SK101, Study Grammar:
Know what you want to study // Know what will be useful to you! Ask yourself, will I use this in an everyday situation. If the answer is no, SAVE IT FOR LATER (don’t not learn it, but prioritize what you will and won’t use at your level of Korean).
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE You may think this is self-explanatory, but a lot of people will look at a grammar lesson and read through it, but forget it the next day. You have to challenge your brain with what you’re reading. Don’t just look at the words, read them and understand them. You can do this by: ~ creating your own sentences with the grammar you just learned ~ staying FAR AWAY from a translator ~ and trying to implement it in your journal, to your Korean friends or your Korean tutor. (It also helps, for me, say it in your head sometimes)
Review what you have learned!!! Again, a lot of people will question why this is a tip. Think of it this way! If you take piano lessons every single day for the past year, but then you stop playing for five years. Do you think you’ll be able to play the piano as easily as you did when you were studying it? No. That’s why you need to practice and review what you’ve learned until it’s really stuck.
I will say it again, studying grammar is boring. Even sometimes I don’t want to do it. But I know that at the end of the day, I’m 1000x happier if I’ve advanced my Korean - even just by a little.
Again, best of luck on your exam! Message me if you have any more questions ~ Happy Learning :)
~ SK101
