It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

(lowkey screamed in surprise and joy when i saw the legend @justcakethanks themself liking my idea)

so yeah. here you go. another stupid one

i loved the phm movie but there are a couple of things that i feel like they missed out on that the book portrayed really well - specifically based on graces relationships and life back on earth

the movie focuses primarily on the space aspect of the story that takes place on board the hail mary, and although i think it was a good choice to exclude what they did (mostly because it just wouldnt translate well into the medium) there are a lot of things movie-only fans just didnt get to see.

the book spends a lot more time exploring the characters and relationships on Stratts vatt. there are so many scientists and events that were used to create a bunch of interesting characters. like dr leclerc was a really significant character to me in the book, and that whole scene where they destroyed antarctica and his reaction to it was genuinely one of the most impactful things in the story, and its really important in building both Dr. Leclercs character but also Stratt's.

a lot of the characters also have relationships and friendships with grace. Dr Lamar and him have this silly rivalry going on, Grace has to teach Dr. DuBois and Annie Shapiro and they keep telling him uncomfortable stuff about their private life and it just makes both the death of the crew sadder but also Grace's sacrifice even more heartbreaking.

In the movie we conceptually know that grace had a life but thats only shown through his students and his relationship with carl. im like 99 percent sure that carl was a movie original character and i think he was great and necessary for the movie - a lot of the early scenes involve graces internal dialogue as he problem solves and tries to figure stuff out, so it was rlly important that they gave him another non-scientific character to explain stuff to and bounce ideas off. but, unlike the book its kind of shown that he and stratt were his ONLY friends and support on the Petrova task force (or just in general) and theyre both shown in his sacrifice scene as letting him go up without a struggle

comparitively, in the book Grace has a much larger support network and a lot of characters who would protest or disagree with Stratts plan to send him on the Hail Mary (and Yao even explicitly says that he doesnt want Grace to be on his crew if he doesnt want to come), and it was his established connections and friendships that were so much more tangible than the obscure 'life' he had in the movie that made his sacrifice way more upsetting and heartbreaking to me idk.

anyways moral of the story read the book its rlly good
