What struck me about Enjolras and Grantaire in the musical tonight is something I never realized in quite this way before: there’s a moment when they switch places. Enjolras learns no help is coming, and he loses hope, and he stops believing change is reachable. Grantaire realizes that he had something to believe in all along, that his life meant something simply because he shared it with and is giving it for his friends. Grantaire believes. And in switching places, Enjolras and Grantaire can really see each other and reach each other for the first time. They clasp hands and you know they would embrace were it not for the war they’re fighting. That’s the moment their romance has a real chance to work, and that’s the last moment they have. But the love was there, even however briefly. And that matters.
