Boundary Functions of 1998 was a motion sensored surface which only starts to draw lines when two people step out onto the surface. People move and lines are the individual's personal space. As people move the shapes move to show the changing personal relationship.
The artist, Jin Yo Mok, says that he had always thought making something incredible required uncovering a secret or creating the invisible. Then he realized how simple and magical a music box is. Nothing is hiding, everything is simple and infront of you.
He created a large wooden music box controlled by the viewer spinning a lever and the played notes correspond with the LED lights along the cilinder.
The Soni Cilinder is a glass touch screen musical instrument. After you choose the desired notes, you turn the lever and it plays the notes you set up for it. Sliding your hand along the glass creates a bevy of tunes.
Another piece is called Light Bead Curtain, when he touches the glass bead it lights up and plays a note.
Next he has the Buddha hat which has motion sensors to vibrate when he puts it on his head.

This kinetic art sculpture is in Portland Oregon and is right downtown across from powell's bookstore. I love this piece because it is super tall and only people roughly above six feet tall can make it move. I happen to fall in that category, so people always get excited when I give it a good push.
It is a series of weighted metals when pushed create the floppy yet strong motion as seen in the video. Public participatory art is my favorite because it is meant to be touched and played with. Pubic art is a huge draw for a city, citizens can appreciate being included in the daily life of the city.
Especially conveniently located at one of the most popular bus stops, this art installation is a great way to brighten someones rainy day. (Surely it's raining because it's Portland)
Untitled (Perfect Lovers) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres
This piece is simple with two ordinary clocks synchronized to one another. As time progresses they are destined to fall out of synch with one another. The piece can be read as symbolic for his lover who died shortly after the piece was completed. Its presence stirs emotions of time that is fleeting for all of us. This work is quite powerful even though it consists of two mundane objects. To me it reads to the mortality of time that has control over us all. Especially when we are with a significant other it is more than likely that one of us will go before the other. Therefore this piece brings forth thoughts of the pain of that inevitable loss.
Untitled (Perfect Lovers) is poignant due to Gonzalez-Torres’s use of ready-made objects, which he commonly used in his art in opposition to modernism. Here, the clocks could stand as any lover of any type, background, gender, or sexuality: their ordinary, objectness leaves this sort of portrait open for the audience to identify with the piece. Gonzalez-Torres himself was queer, but steered-away from queer imagery by using ready-made objects so that the focus of his work was not on his sexuality, but on the concept of the work.
This classic piece by Felix Gonzalez-Torres uses two identical clocks ticking at the same time. House hold objects are always cool to use in art, because the viewer could interprete it completely different than someone from a different background.
My question is, what is time? A clock is just a measuring tool. This piece makes me wonder why Americans are always bent out of shape over getting places on time. Always in a rush and never enjoying the present moment.
I remember my Honduran friend and I had a conversation about time and how meaningless it is in Honduras. They show up when they can, and the person waiting is never mad that they were late because you never always know the situation. Maybe the person was late because he saved someones life or something extraordinary like that.
I love this piece because good art makes you question your everyday life and the purpose of things.

A group of people in a 3D art class created an interactive piece of art.
This large mounted piece of art is inspiring just looking at the message it conveys. But then there's more! It also is a form of participatory art, the viewers get a chance to write down their dreams and aspirations. It could be big or small, but maybe this art piece takes a passerby out of their comfort zone and gets them to participate by writing something they wish to do before they died.
I think would be cool installation in elementary schools, get kids dreaming early. Make the young generation realize that anything is possible if you put your mind and heart to it.

Beer is art.
We had talked about in class about how in 1979 Tom Marioni and his friends had gotten together to drink beer. They considered this the highest form of art. Muuqi, Alex and myself decided it was our quest to find what exactly Tom Marioni was talking about.
On Friday January 25, 2013, We congregated at Alex's house with beer. At around 9pm we started to consume said beer. It was a joyous session of art making. We proceeded to construct multiple structures, only to knock them down. We shared laughs and human experiences, we also participated in a friendly game of darts. Not only were the throwers participating, but the one man out was asked to call out numbers for the throwers to aim for. This is a classic example of participatory art, because while drinking the beer (art), I (as the viewer/audience) would call out different numbers and they would try and hit it. I felt included in the game even though I was not the one throwing the dart.
There you have it, Drinking beer with friends is the highest form participatory art.

Act Up is a non-partisan group of people who are all angry with the inaction in history of the AIDS crisis. Aids is a pandemic that has depleted our world population for many decades. This site is current and active. They have been taking direct action for over twenty-five years now. Act up offers new and exciting research and possible new discoveries.
Act up is here to inform the general public. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!! It is fantastic to these type of sites where educating the young adults on what is possible, and how easy it is to prevent.
On April 25th Act up is teaming with occupy and they are going to try and shut down Wall street for the day. Act up and Occupy are very similar because they both are frustrated with the inaction from our Government whether it be the AIDS crisis or the lack of consiquence for the financial crisis where the top 1% profited higher than ever when the American people suffered and are still trying to find work or schools.
The NO project is based in Athens Greece and is focused on bringing awareness to the Human trafficking problem in the world. This award winning video, called 1.2 Million Children, shows how a wonderful life full of teenage energy can slip away from in a blink of an eye.
The girl in the video is chasing the sun and she keeps trying but she can never quite catch up to it. She then almost has it cornered when she falls into a dark pit with a giant lizard keeping her company. Toward the end of the short film, I realized the lizard is dangerous and harmful to the small young girl.
Shocking information at the end, "1,200,000 children are bought and sold across international borders each year. The majority of these victims are forced into commercial sex trade."
I had no idea that many children were in danger. This video brings global awareness to the problem of human trafficking and makes me realize what a safe place I live in. I am blessed to have my health and food on my table.

-Young people rose up for the free speech movement, followed by antiwar demonstrations. America’s youth were embracing the concept of community development and mind-altering drugs. They believed they could change the world.

Explain an approach to AIDS that Crimp finds problematic:
PBS broadcasting a program about Aids in the Arts, focusing on Homosexuals.
Problem: The Aids virus is not exclusively in the gay community. PBS never mentioned how it is just as possible to contract the bug while having sex between a man and a women.
The first stages of the NAMES Project Memorial Quilt was thought up in 1985 by AIDS activist Cleve Jones. He encouraged people to write all the Names of the people they knew who had died from aids on a sign. This was for a march in San Francisco protesting the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. They planned on taping every sign on the San Francisco Federal Building. When all the signs were taped on the Federal Building they all looked like a large quilt, Jones thought of a brilliant idea of making an AIDS quilt. The quilt officially started in 1987 by Jones and his band of volunteers.
At this time, victims of AIDS were not usually granted funerals because of the social stigma behind the bug. This was a chance for the victim's loved ones to properly honor the life of their loved one. It also gave a visual of how drastic of a pandemic HIV/AIDS is and shows it is still around today and people are still dying.
Currently the quilt is housed in Atlanta Georgia and continues to grow as our doctors still have not found the almighty cure.
The One Million Bones Project brings global awareness to genocide we, as 'informed' US citizens, wouldn't normally see. The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art displays this project on the second Saturday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. This project gives it's viewers a chance to put a visual aid next to the statistics of the killings caused by genocide.
As a privileged American male, I do not think about genocide in other countries simply because I don't have to worry about it in my daily life. This project is great because it make me realize how easy of a life I have and I should be thankful.
I like how it is a recurring event, it isn't just one day and then it's gone. When a project like this sticks around, one doesn't have the chance to ignore it and move on. That is the problem with local news programs, a disaster happens or something traumatic and within a few days the station has moved on and the public has forgotten the victims of the disaster.
The logical outcome of testing is a quarantine of those effected.

Check out our participatory art piece, 500 Pieces, a project in collaboration with Animus Arts. Collaboratively, people will assemble a single sculpture from notched wooden squares. So far, we’ve taken the piece to Palo Alto, Berkeley and Manhattan. In 2013, we plan on taking it to even more cities across the US!
This project is called "500 Pieces" and is an amazing example of how our Government should conduct business. People assemble to hear a speech and after the speech everyone mingles around talking. 500 blocks of wood are laying around with sharpies in every possible corner. With these pieces everyone is welcome to write down their suggestions of advice or a more effective Government.
This art installation asks the question "what would a more participatory culture look like". After written on, the pieces slide together to create a structure made by the people. After the event, the pieces are taken down only to be put back up at the next speaking engagement. The writings are encouraged and kept.
This installation gives a voice to the people who might not have publicly spoken out before.
This French site is a great resource for public music performances by well known artists and some not known quite as well. Most performances encourage their listeners to join in clapping and singing. Often held in public spaces, the performers must adapt to the obstacles the public confronts.
This is a fantastic short film on how experience can change perspectives for life.
A upperclass white women arrives to the train station in a fluster, her train leaves soon and the station is crowded. By her clothes, posture, and attitude towards the 'dirty' public you can assume she comes from wealth. She misses her train by a hair, she decides to get a salad while she waits for the next one to arrive. She orders the salad and sets her bags in a booth. Alas! She forgot a fork. She grabs a fork, makes sure to wipe it off, before using it. She comes back to her table to see a black man eating her salad. She shouts at him and he doesn't care (he is eating that salad). The women decides to eat 'her' salad, she grabs her fork and start in. They stare at each other while they share the salad. He gets up and she finishes the salad, but right before she gets up to leave, he comes back with two cups of coffee. They share a few sips and she departs. She gets halfway to her train and realizes she has forgotten her bags. She runs back only to see the booth is empty. She then comes across her bags in the booth next to the gentlemen's, with her uneaten salad sitting promptly on the table. The man had shared his salad without complaint, then bought her a cup of coffee. Quite the gentlemen.
Through an experience with the working class pubic, the high-class privileged women's life was changed with a simple reality check.
