Happy Madness Day 2025 !!!
I originally planned on making a piece for this year's Madness Day, which I started working on earlier this year. However, it's largely unfinished due to burn out and my growing interest in other things. Rather than scrapping it, though, I plan to continue working on it when I have the time and submit the finished piece next year. In the meantime, I will share some of my progress on it tomorrow.
Forgot to post this yesterday, so I am doing so now.
Anyways for context, this piece was meant to be a crossover/mashup between Peter Jackson's Dead Alive / Braindead (1992) and Madness Madness Combat episode 3 (Madness Combat 3: Avenger). There similarities between the some aspects/scenes of the movie and earlier episodes of Madness Combat, and I wanted to play into that. When/if finished, this artwork is supposed to be a nod to both the movie's lawnmower scene and the MC3 scene where the floor is completely covered in blood and corpses.
NOTE: I had multiple workspaces, one for the zeds, the actual artwork, and color sampling (I wanted to pay homage to Dead Alive by using colors sampled from pictures of the movie).
This zed got its head shoved up a wall lamp and now its burning from the inside, hence why is glowing. It is currently unfinished, as the feet shown are just placeholders, and their clothing is supposed to be torn and covered in soot (head is burning). For those who actually watched Dead Alive / Braindead (Unrated OR Uncut Version), this is an easter egg.
Earlier sketches of the lampshade zed. The color of the zed's lamp was sampled from the cropped picture of a lamp in the movie. Other colors were sampled from the rest of the picture and other scenes from the movie (can't show some of these due to the film's depictions of excessive gore).
Finished zed with color and lighting tests.
Decapitated zed head.
This is another easter egg from the movie. It is a little zed hiding inside a corpse. Please note, that this zed was made very early on, before I started sampling any colors.
Guides and rough sketch of the artwork. Hank is surrounded by a mob of zeds in the foyer while attacking them with a lawnmower.
Recreated the wallpaper from the movie using colors sampled from movie screenshots. The room is actually going to be dark, so it will be overlayed with with darker colors later on.
Of the scenes from the movie that I'm sampling colors from, this is the tamest one.
I take snippets when I want to focus on a small section of a scene's image. This makes color sampling easier.
