I think I really struggle with Whipping Girl because of the way it positions femininity. Serano is rightfully critical of the way some Feminists of the time were inadvertently misogynist themselves in the way they looked down upon femininity. However she has this lack of awareness for the conflicting truths that while femininity is liberation for many trans women, it is still oppressively imposed upon other demographics - and is frankly - also oppressively imposed upon other trans women as well.

Serano is not a writer focused on liberation, and she makes that very clear by putting herself in opposition to her contemporaries who write "transgender revolution" books. She is a writer who finds comfort in the status quo, in the gender binary, in the sex binary, in gender conformity, and being a binary trans person who is comfortable being gender conforming is just fine, but it's not really a unique position. It's an incredibly privileged position in fact.

And in recent years she's very vocal about and critical of that!! Which makes it all the more confusing to me when people tout around Whipping Girl as if it is revolutionary.
