Infinite Scroll for your Tumblr blog

I fell in love with the infinite scroll the first time I saw it. I wanted to get it on my Tumblr blog but didn't really like the only theme that had it already. So, I wrote this.

And it seems to work well with Stationary.

RAR files on the Mac

You can first download the [installation](http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?id=970&dl=/rar/rarosx-3.9.3.tar.gz) from [WinRAR](http://www.win-rar.com/downloadnow.html). You can then copy the executables to /usr/local/bin and then start using them from the Terminal universally just like you would use the zip and unzip commands.

sudo cp ./rar ./unrar /usr/local/bin

This is one of the ways you can manage RAR files on the Mac.

Tween Variables in Actionscript

[This](http://forums.adobe.com/message/2739064) and [this](http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=196368) are two interesting discussions on the usage of Tween variables in Actionscript. By Tween variables, I refer to objects of the [Tween class](http://www.adobe.com/livedocs/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLangRefV3/fl/transitions/Tween.html). In summary, remember to declare your variables globally (outside all of the functions) and ensure that you are not reusing any of them. By doing this, you are essentially preventing the possibility of your animation from stopping in the middle. **Update**: If it still doesn't work, you can try [this](http://code.google.com/p/tweener). [Download](http://code.google.com/p/tweener/downloads/list) and copy the folder to your project directory, include the package as import caurina.transitions.Tweener, replace statements where your Tween objects were previously instantiated with Tweener.addTween(...) and you are set.

The Curious Case of the jQuery Selector

Sometimes, it happens that when you haven't learnt something from the ground up, even after you are pretty sure that you are good at it, something very basic can take you by surprise. Like for example, I had always assumed that the jQuery selector $(#..) was just a shorthand for the Javascript selector method document.getElementById. But I was wrong. There is a difference. The jQuery selector gets the element as an object while the Javascript method just chooses the node. The object selected by jQuery is useful as we can attach behaviors to it or to object nodes relative to it. But you might come across a scenario when you would just want to choose the node. To do that, use the get method of the selector. For eg.

$('#skywriter').get(0).bespin.editor.value = "Happy Coding";

which is exactly the same as

var node = document.getElementById('skywriter'); node.bespin.editor.value = "Happy Coding";

The Annoying Focus Outline in Chrome

You might have noticed an annoying outline around the element in focus on a page in Google Chrome. There is away to remove it for your website.

Simple but does the trick. * here can also be the selector for any element on the page. Unlike other browsers, in Chrome, you can resize textareas. Personally, I think it is a good idea as it gives the user some flexibility. But if you want to do away with it, you can.

'Unlike' a Facebook post using the Graph API

As [mentioned](http://developers.facebook.com/docs/api) here, it is quite easy to like a [Facebook post](http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/api/post) from your application. You just need to make a request to the following URL using your application's access token.

graph.facebook.com/POST_ID/likes?access_token=...

But as to how you can unlike (_ie_ undo the like action) doesn't seem to be visibly documented anywhere. Or at least, I couldn't find it. To do this, apparently, you need to make a POST request to the same URL but along with a method parameter set to delete.

graph.facebook.com/POST_ID/likes?method=delete&access_token=...

This is a generic way by which you can undo any of your connections/actions in the Facebook graph.

Importing large SQL files in MySQL

When you are importing a large SQL file into phpMyAdmin, it is possible that your import might get timed out in the middle. The best way to solve this problem would be by running MySQL directly from your command prompt. If you are using [Xampp](http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html) on Windows, run this command -

> C:\xampp\mysql\bin\mysql -u U D < F

If you are using [MAMP](http://mamp.info) on a Mac, then -

: /Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql -u U D < F

Here, **U** is your MySQL username. By default, it is _root_; **D** is the name of the database you wish to import to (must be an existing database); **F** is the full path to the SQL import file. If your database is password protected, it will prompt you for the password. If not, the import would have started already. To verify that this is happening, use phpMyAdmin and keep refreshing the page. Messy but works!

JQuery plugin for Font Detection (Download)

Let me take an example to illustrate the purpose this plugin seeks to serve - Assume your first choice font for any HTML element in your page (could be the body also) is Lucida Grande and the font-size is 13px. You might be know already that Lucida Grande is an Apple-licensed font and hence, wouldn't show up on your Windows machine. So, the browser will now turn to your second choice font - Arial (assume again). Now, this plugin enables you override the set default font-size (13px) with a custom font size for Arial passed as an argument to this plugin. Drupal Sessions and Anonymous Users

If you are using $_SESSION array to store data on your Drupal site for an anonymous user (not logged in) and notice that $_SESSION values are not retained across pages as they are expected to be, ensure that you have the anonymous user (with uid 0) present in your users table. If not, insert a row, bring him back and things should start working normally again!

External User Authentication in Drupal 6

I was writing a social graph module for Drupal 6 and had to log in a user on successful authentication from Facebook or Twitter. I went through this discussion at [http://drupal.org/node/151515](http://drupal.org/node/151515), was overwhelmed, and just decided to check out the Drupal 6 User API instead, hoping to find an easy fix. Sure enough, there was a nifty user_external_login() method which presented a direct solution to my problem.

$user = user_load($uid); // Here $uid is the Drupal user ID mapped to the external service ID in the DB user_external_login($user); // Logs in the Drupal user normally

Inserting newlines in a string in Bash

You might know already that an echo statement ends in a newline. But sometimes, we might also need to add newlines in strings. A good example would be when you are logging error messages in a string and want to display it at the end of execution of the script.

... messages=${messages}"\n"${message} ... echo -e ${messages}

The -e switch lets echo translate the \ns to newlines.

Order of Hooks in Drupal 6

I have been using Drupal for a while now and I have come across this a couple of times but never really bothered to look it up. Finally, I had to and I did. The function hooks are called in the order of their weights in the system table. Higher the weight of your module, the later the associated hook is called. And for the modules which share the same weight (this is the default case), the hooks are called in ascending order of the module names. JQuery Accordion Height Issue

If you are using the [accordion](http://docs.jquery.com/UI/API/1.7.2/Accordion), remember that the autoHeight attribute is set to true by default. What this means is finds the height of the longest of the tabs inside and makes that the same for the rest. This could sometimes make your accordion look awry especially when your tabs are of unequal sizes. To solve this, just explicitly set autoHeight to false

Reversing Node Selection Order in JQuery 1.4.1

The JQuery function [.each(_s_)](http://api.jquery.com/each) is used to iterate through each of the nodes that satisfy the selector _s_. This iteration is done in the order of the appearance of the nodes in the HTML page. It is possible that sometimes you may want this to be done in reverse. Eg. To achieve something like the [Twitterfall](http://twitterfall.com) effect. Now, JQuery doesn’t have a _reverse_ method for in its API for node selection. So, we will leverage on Javascript's tidy [array reverse](http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_reverse.asp) method to achieve the desired result.
