ʚɞ in which, you’ve been volunteering at the same summer camp for three years now and figured that you wanted your career to involve child care. you’ve made plenty of friends along the way who shared the same sentiments while also building an impressive resume. enter eom seonghyeon who doesn’t take anything serious and uncharacteristically signs up to volunteer as well. his nonchalant attitude and willingness to not follow the rules rub you wrong in every way possible. not to mention he seemed to only not get along with you. just how were you meant to survive two whole weeks with him?

the time was cutting it quite close to 12, which was even closer to lunchtime, and the new volunteers were still no where in sight. in fact, there weren’t any updates about their whereabouts either. despite those anxiety inducing circumstances you found yourself relaxing anyway, and you had no one else to thank besides the angels of a group you were set to take care of.
your group was currently occupying the arts & crafts station attempting—heavy on attempting, to make flower bouquets out of tiny colorful pipe cleaners. the playlist that you let them curate together was lowly humming from an old speaker you brought from home. and the natural breeze that the wind offered was light and airy, and made everything all the more perfect.
occasionally you’d open your phone to humor your group chat for a few before opting to just watch over your kids with a fond smile you wouldn’t be able to wipe off even if you did happen to notice it. who knew these few moments would be the only peace you’d get for the remaining weeks? definitely not you.
the walkie talkie that was given to the counselors to minimize phone usage (which didn’t work in the slightest) buzzed from your lap with the murmur of familiar voices. one of which sounded particularly australian, so you turned the volume up a bit to hear what you’d been missing.
“bro i swear she never responds to these things,” as suspected jake’s incessant complaining came out as a low grumble as if he was speaking to himself. and then suddenly, another spoke up that you recognized to be ian. “i wouldn’t respond to your ass either.” it was luck, truly, that you decided to keep the device at a low volume and knowing ian there was plenty more where that came from.
you quietly and quickly made your group aware of you stepping away without so much as disturbing the calm vibe they had going. when you were sure that you were out of earshot, you responded and interrupted ian and jake’s bickering in the process. “ian stop cursing. and jake, who were you trying to reach?”
with one more slick comment, ian whispered out even more curse words before switching servers all together. instead of dragging on with more of his own rebuttals (because you knew he wanted to) jake let out an exaggerated sigh and said, “the newbies are here and management wants you to give them a tour.”
to make jake’s overly long explanation short, the boys had just made it in not too long ago and still had all of their belongings. so not only were you in charge of giving them a tour, you’d also have to get them settled in beforehand. and because of jake’s childish quarrel with ian as well as his absolute need to over explain, they had already been waiting for you for quite some time. not to mention the time it’d take for you to walk to the welcome lounge.
during your hasty journey towards the volunteers you thanked all the lucky stars that your group was being looked after by another counselor who wasn’t kyoungbae (which was an ultimate win in itself.) you also hoped that they wouldn’t be too agitated and leaned more towards the understanding side. that thought led to more hypotheticals about their personalities and if they’d fit in with your group of friends. the idea of new additions was exciting but you considered the reality of things too.
as you approached the open entrance you saw the two sitting with their heads down, seemingly close to dozing off. you couldn’t help the feeling of your heart dropping at the sight of one of their side profiles. you had to admit.. he was cute. side profiles could be misleading and certain angles could make anyone look good, but you could just tell that this was different.
you made the considerate effort to tiptoe closer and gently tap them on the shoulder, warranting their heads to snap up in surprise almost in sync. “hi, so sorry to keep you waiting.”
the one that you hadn’t been taking sneaky glances at sleepily waved you off which instantly made your lingering guilt fizz out into nothing. with their heads finally raised, you could get a nice once over of both of them in without it being too weird. and as it turns out cute side profile boy had a cute front profile too.
he was clad in comfortable sweat shorts and a loose fitting top, his friend in similar attire. you noticed that they both each had one backpack still on their backs and a duffle sitting by their feet. they already looked completely wiped out and… sweaty? whatever, it was none of your business.
the cute side and front profile guy’s friend placed a hand on his chest and politely introduced the both of them. “i’m keonho and,” he gestured towards the other boy with his head. “this is seonghyeon, sean for short.”
you slowly nodded as you tossed the names around in your head to remember them along with their faces, and offered what you hoped wasn’t too awkward of a smile. “well i’m yn, and i’ll basically be your guide for the rest of the day.” while keonho hummed in acknowledgement, seonghyeon showed no sign of a reaction. weird.
before you could dwell on it too much keonho was talking again, “so what, you’re like holding our hand the whole day?” his playful tone had your eyes widening a bit at the sudden informality and show of humor, but you appreciated it all the same. “no, i’ll just be making sure you guys settle in okay.” you found your lips curving into something more genuine and easy, taking on the same joking lilt. “is that okay with you, keonho?”
you could tell that he too appreciated the reciprocated energy and suddenly felt that your earlier excitement wasn’t completely in vain. “yeah. so when does this tour start?” he tilts his head and trains his face to look a bit more serious but he just looks like a chihuahua cutely squinting its eyes to you.
you couldn’t help but to shake your head at the sight before, “right now.”
the tour quickly turned out to not feel like one at all, once you got over seonghyeon not saying anything, it was quite fun. you just chalked it up to him not being much of a talker, which was fine because keonho talked enough for the both of them. he was really funny and kind of reminded you of niki in a way.
towards the end of the grand tour— keonho’s words not yours, you were explaining the lenient yet firm curfew that all the counselors had to follow. “the kids’ bedtime is around 10 to 10:30 so after that we’re free to do whatever. we just have to be in our cabins by 12.” you looked to keonho to see if he understood, but was thrown completely off guard when cute side and front profile boy aka seonghyeon began to speak.
“why?” his voice sent chills down your spine because one. hello he was finally talking after like thirty minutes, and two. you weirdly found it to be a bit smooth and satisfying to listen to. you blinked oh so intelligently at him. why? wait what did he mean why? you tried to look at keonho for help, but he was looking at seonghyeon too. “um, what are you confused about?”
a flicker of a smile made the corners of his lips twitch before the expression was gone altogether. so much so that if you were to point it out you’d feel crazy. “why do we have to be in by 12?” huh? you really couldn’t tell if he was serious or not, but you went with the former anyway. maybe he needed a more thorough explanation, and you had no problem providing him with one.
“i guess it’s just to make sure we get enough sleep, since we have to wake up earlier than the campers.”
you were flooded with something akin to relief when he slowly nodded in his head in comprehension. that however lasted for about three seconds before he had another question for you. “so what happens if your out past 12 then?” for once you really didn’t have an answer, because nothing was to happen per se. most of the rules set for counselors were more like heavy suggestions that nobody ever questioned because they weren’t that serious.
this counselor happened to be the first.
you cleared your throat after a few seconds of racking your brain, “i don’t know, i’ve never been out past 12…”
he then tilted his head in a way that made him infuriatingly more attractive and finally allowed his face to break out into a small downturned smile. his cheekbones and dimples became more prominent with the actions and didn’t help your moment of disarray at all. “mm.” he hummed in a way that insinuated he didn’t believe you but was choosing to drop it.
“what? i’m serious.” you furrowed your eyebrows, growing a little irritated.
he narrowed his eyes a bit and you could see the amusement dancing around in them. “sure.” his dimples got deeper too giving away his widening smile before you could truly see it.
“and why are you smiling so hard? what’s funny?”
“i’m not smiling,” he says while actively snickering.
“i literally see you.” you were clearly getting annoyed and it seemed that the more you showed it, more quiet laughter was elicited.
and then it hit you, oh my god, he’s one of the worst archetypes of boys. a cute boy a first glance, but absolutely infuriating to talk to. a rage baiter, someone who thrived off of genuinely making people’s blood boil. and it wasn’t even in the way friends often did it, because you didn’t even know him and you found that you didn’t want to if your conversations would continue on like this.
“why do you look so mad? what happened?” his tone shifted into something so innocent you probably would’ve believed it if you weren’t so bothered.
you opened your mouth to respond but was swiftly interrupted and startled by jake’s voice booming from the speakers of your forgotten walkie talkie. “yo y/n, it’s almost time for lunch.” as if you didn’t know that already. “drop the newbies back at their cabin so they can settle and then you can head back to your group.”
your eyes rolled before you could stop them, muttering, “got it.”
with your mood completely ruined, you walked past the boys whom where looking at you expectantly and wordlessly gestured for them to follow. your peaceful two weeks of being a camp counselor was quickly turning into two weeks of being prodded and provoked, and you absolutely couldn’t wait to get away from seonghyeon.
