Top picks from the guys of Handsome Coffee in the Art's District- on the top of the adventuring list!
Check out where all your favorite roasts come from!
Cafe Demitasse
Whenever I walked into Demitasse Café with its towering Kyoto drippers and siphon bar I was immediately enchanted. There’s just a real appeal to the whole mad scientist aspect to coffee brewing.
It also made me realize that my insight into coffee is mostly fueled by passion, making me a mere nerd among geeks. Luckily, the coffee geeks at Café Demitasse are happy to share their knowledge, creating an atmosphere that lacks the prestige (Do I dare say the pretentiousness?) of other well-known Los Angeles cafes.
Round one for me was a Mexican Coatepec Veracruz in the Clever roasted by Augie’s. Although the coffee was amazing, it was the brewing method that took me. I wasn’t familiar with the Clever (a sort of French press and pour over combo) that produced a full-bodied clean cup.
Then, after attending the home roasting coffee class (FREE! - more on that later), I stepped up my game and went for an Ethiopian Sidoma Guji in the Siphon. I was completely wowed by the Siphon and grateful the barista was friendly enough to explain the magic behind it. The process complimented the berry, apple and other fruit flavors of the cup. I admit I’m a newbie when it comes to tasting, but I hope to hone my skills by drinking more and more coffee. Acceptable excuse for my increased coffee consumption, right?
The place has got seating indoor and out, great local pastries and kick ass coffee…what more do you want? I could ramble on and on about this place, and may or may not still be hyper on the caffeine, but will retrain myself. Basically, here you will find a coffee nerd’s haven.

Darth Vader mug - so cool (only second to my R2D2 cookie jar :) )
"Friends don't let friends drink Starbucks."
"Life's too short for bad coffee."
Intelligentsia at the Google Venice offices...what a dream! One day...
Check out the siphon at Demitasse cafe in Little Tokyo and get pumped for my full post later this week. SPOILER: it was awesome!
I have the white lens mug and get compliments all the time. It makes a great gift! (I would know, my brother got it for me ;) )
Cafe Mak
This comfortable café is located in the midst of Koreatown. You may ask yourself why I finally crept beyond the 405 away from by Westside loyalties. It’s Janie’s fault. She got herself into USC and I couldn’t let another week of school go by without trying to help her discover a secret study spot.
Good news or bad news first?
Always bad news.
Well….Cafe Mak’s overpriced, definitely uber overpriced. I paid around $6 for a Korean Style Coffee- a cold coffee with cream and sugar already blended poured over crushed ice. Also, a lot of people will recommend the Sweet Potato Cake, however, unimpressed. It doesn’t really taste like anything. Overall, steer clear of the food.
That being said, the Korean Style Coffee was refreshing on a hot day, not too sweet and as the ice melts still drinkable. This place has a labyrinth of rooms so there’s no doubt you’ll be able to find a place to sit. When you do sit down its soooo comfortable. All of the seats are cushioned plus extra pillows with plenty of outlets near by and Wifi (although spotty, it works!). There’s even this little buzzer on the table that you can ring when you need service. It’s the ultimate studying spot.
Buller…Buller,

Espresso Cielo
Decided to go adventuring on Main Street in Santa Monica this past weekend, and started off at Espresso Cielo. In a Sunday morning haze, I ordered a cappuccino, which was pretty standard and enjoyable, but upon further review of their menu, I’d instead recommend a cold brew iced coffee, fresh pour over or Gibraltar, which is a double shot of espresso layered with lightly steamed milk…yum.
The atmosphere was mellow, cool interior, plenty of seating indoor and out. It wasn’t too crowded and I felt comfortable hanging out for a couple hours; it would make a great weekday meeting spot. They also mix it up a bit by using blue cups instead of the standard white. The most refreshing part was there were no ironic (or I guess also non-ironic) mustaches, vests, or talk of NPR…meaning- no hipsters in sight! The baristas had personality, remembered their locals and played great music (80s rock for my time there). I always thought Guns and Roses could suit a coffee shop just fine.
Ciao, Coffee Nerd
Groundwork
As this blog quickly fills with posts of Santa Monica and Venice spots you will soon realize (if you haven’t already) that I live and work on the Westside. I plan to fully branch out, but I’m gonna start local- baby steps, right?
First up is Groundwork, it has multiple locations, but I stopped by the one on Rose Ave. in Venice. There’s parking and a little outside area that suits well for catching up with friends, but probably not for setting up shop to crank out emails. What brought me here was my friend Jared who is a Groundwork loyalist, especially to their “Bitches Brew” a darker roast named after the Miles Davis jazz album.
Although this roast helped me get to the end of the day, Groundwork’s bottled Cold Brew stole the show. I do admit, that drinking coffee out of a glass bottle took some getting used to since my taste buds seemed prepared for either beer or soda. After they accepted change was good, I truly appreciate the smoothness of the Cold Brew with its hints of red fruit in the roast.
Also, if you see a tall fit bald guy there that’s Jared ! Say “hi”- he doesn’t bite, usually.

Dogtown Coffee
Dogtown Coffee
All I have to say is “Sea Salted Caramel Ice Coffee”. Yup, it’s a thing, at least at Dogtown Coffee on Santa Monica on the opposite end of Main St. I was planning on just scoping out the place for a future post, but when I saw that guy on the menu I couldn’t resist. In my own words, it bitch slaps the lesser Starbucks Carmel Macchiato version, a culprit that usually sways me away from ever ordering sweet drinks ever. Here’s Dogtown’s description, “we start with smooth 24 hour cold brewed ice coffee, sweeten with deep caramel, then top with our sea salt infused foam.” Yesssss, right?
There’s also other more traditional coffees and some reasonably priced and delicious sounding breakfast options that makes this place ideal for piecing together a crazy weekend with buddies. I’m talking to you breakfast burrito “the munchies”. The café is small and there’s not a ton of seating indoors or out, but the atmosphere is casual and laid back, appropriate when paying homage to the Z-boys. The spot is close enough to the boardwalk that I’d recommend grabbing a large SSC Ice Coffee and taking your time venturing down into the weirdness of Venice (you’ll know when you get there).
Brazilian Kiss
Great news one and all- coffee is mobile now!!
While at an outdoor screening of Pretty in Pink (love me some John Hughes), I stumbled upon this café on wheels. They’re legit too, serving coffee grown in Brazil but roasted locally in LA by Intelligentsia Coffee (win win?).
They’re best known for their Latino Latte and Brazilian Kiss. The only real difference between the two is more sugar- So gauge your sweet tooth accordingly. They are definitely popular, since I witnessed the dude barista pump out seven drinks in less than ten minutes. I got the Latino Latte and that was even a little too sweet for my taste, but either drink would make for a great dessert.

Coffee Nerd
