How I’m going to choose my next target language:
does anyone else feel like an idiot pronouncing sounds alone in their room
Moving Blogs
As I grow in language learning this blog is fairly inactive. I want to pick up blogging more as I learn more about language, language learning, and teaching English - my minor! I want this as my main blog, I realize that I have like 5 followers and I don’t necessarily talk to any of you maybe you don’t even realize I’m like alive? But either way I’m pretty sure I’m going to delete this side blog and transform my main blog, at the moment Viking Barista, as I change my Tumblr presence. The blog is going to be a bit of a resource dump for learning French and English, but I will add more languages as I add more languages!
If you want to learn a language, learn it.
Don’t be scared if the grammar is difficult, the sounds give your tongue a hernia, the writing system is cumbersome, or there are more empty beer cans in your house then there are speakers of that language. The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t get it. The best thing that can happen is that you see inside someone else’s heart, someone else’s soul, and most precious of all, a whole group, perhaps of billions of people, cease to be cardboard cutouts and magically turn into humans, with problems you can relate to, good news they can celebrate with you, business to conduct, and untranslatable wisdom to share. For all you know, the most powerful things you will ever say, the last goodbyes, the first life-changing I love you, the first words you say to your newborn child, for all you know, these things aren’t meant to be said in English. If you want to learn a language, learn it. Every day you choose not to, you choose to forsake those irreplaceable moments that you’ll never share, with irreplaceable people in your life that you’ll never be able to meet in English.
french learner things
❤ inability to pronounce vowels
❤ obnoxiously correcting your friends pronunciations of anything french
❤ you’ve never read Proust but are still somehow kin
❤ this goes double for Victor Hugo
❤ making your voice super throaty to disguise the fact that you can’t pronounce a word
❤ reading aloud aka reciting the first half of every word
❤ the passé simple is the just the ugly literature tense you never bothered to learn
❤ changing the entire sentence to avoid the subjunctive
❤ you have been learning french for 300 years. the correct pronunciation of ‘oui’ remains unattainable
When ur linguist friend says “can you say that again” and you know you’re about to get roasted… But kindly roasted because every way of speaking a language is valid
I love airports and packing and the smell of a new city and hotel breakfasts and doing cute touristy stuff, I just love traveling

I'm actually looking for some help in Japanese. I want to learn kanji but I also really want some books and lets just say I'm not buying Genki rn. What are some good grammar books and decent Kanji resources? I kinda want to just follow the N-lists but is that even realistic? Would love cheaper options. I know that everyone says Genki is worth the money but I want to start now rather than in 3 months. Any info is helpful.
Yesterday I got officially accepted into Uni and we had a small “informational” lecture. We need to have 10 credits (so like 3 courses) of a foreign language. Some girl asked if it has to be all in one language or multiple. The teacher looked kinda condescendingly at her and said “well you could try more but we don’t recommend that. You want to get good at one.”
Sorry teacher, I’m gonna take like 8 langs
What did the intransitive verb say when told it was pretty?
Nothing. Intransitive verbs can’t take a complement.
It's not Hangeul, it's Hangul. You should know that if you're actually learning Korean.
It’s actually not Hangeul or Hangul, it’s actually 한글 and the other two are equally accurate romanizations. You could also say Hangeur or Hangur or Hangeurl or whatthehellever.
language is completely made up, go take a walk and drink some water
je suis désolée
PSA that your handwriting in another script doesn't always need to be perfect little mistakes are fine literally no one writes in fonts.
