Not even a little bit sorry but if there wasn’t a love story in the hunger games then I wouldn’t have liked it at all. I know a lot of people look down on those who read or watched a story about war and capitalism and decided what they liked most about it was the romance but the love story was the counterpoint to an otherwise incredibly bleak look at humanity. Suzanne Collins showed us exactly what humans are capable of doing to each other on both ends of the spectrum. We can hold so much hatred in our hearts that it leads us to hate and kill people we don’t even know, but we also can love and knowingly put ourselves in harms way for the sake of our loved ones and we can have and raise children to hold love in their hearts too. Without the romance, it wouldn’t have been a full picture and there wouldn’t have been the hopeful note and directive that she leaves us with to be kind to others and let love fill our hearts instead of hate.

When the book is called “The Hunger Games” and the country is named “Panem” because of the Latin phrase “Panem et Circenses” which comes from the idea that the people of Rome had been filling their bellies and enjoying their entertainment and weren’t paying attention to what their government was doing and we see the people of the Capitol vomiting for the pleasure of filling their bellies again and again while the people in the districts drop dead on the street of starvation and this is the very portrait of greed and gluttony and excess and senseless cruelty and we have Peeta, the first time Katniss ever noticed him, giving her bread freely, taking a beating for it even, to help a starving girl because he LOVED her and maybe just maybe that’s what the entire fucking series is about.

I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that’s just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself.
