hi, i'm avi cogaytes! this is my mostly-kotlc sideblog with a smidgeon of tgl mixed in <3
they/he pronouns + some neopronouns. i'm an adult + full-time student who's been in keepblr a couple of years now. unintentional discourse king and #1 clown at one point. very sporadic fic writer + hurt/comfort enjoyer; my fic masterlist is under the cut!
my fave guys that i create for the most are tiertice and bronte, but i also love to talk about oralie/the council in general, wylie and cyrah, the song twins, and the black swan (esp. livvy and leto). i blog a lot about racism both within kotlc canon and keepblr and am also very interested in general meta. i can sometimes be very critical of certain habits of keepblr's community and also the books in general, but that does not mean i do not have massive appreciation for the roles they have played in my life!

Based on a discussion in the KotLC Annual Exchange server about characters of color, particularly Black characters, being overlooked by the fandom, I've been looking at the statistics for Wylie on AO3. The idea was that, even in fics where he is tagged as a character, he is often more of an unimportant side character than a major focus.
There are, as of 7/12/2026 (when I finished collecting the data), 262 works tagged "Wylie Endal" on ao3. Six of them were not actually fics and were therefore eliminated from the dataset.
Of the 256 remaining fics, 62 (24.2%) were tagged "Wylie Endal," but Wylie was not actually present in the fic. Some of them were incomplete, so it's possible the authors intended to include him later in the fic, but the fact remains that as of now, Wylie is excluded entirely from these fics.
The 194 fics where Wylie made an appearance were divided into the following categories: "Negligible," where Wylie was only mentioned a few times and unimportant to the fic; "Side," where Wylie was a side character in the fic but not a main focus; "Important," where Wylie was a significant character in the fic and usually in one of the main tagged relationships; "Main," where Wylie was (one of) the main character(s).
For the fics with Wylie, the numbers are as follows:
Negligible: 73 fics, 37.6%
Side: 72 fics, 37.1%
Important: 30 fics, 15.5%
Main: 19 fics, 9.8%
And for those curious, this is what the numbers look like for all 256 fics, if we include the ones with no Wylie:
Also based on the same discussion, but with Maruca. As the other predominant Black character in the 'kids' group', Maruca's statistics provide a base so that the same stats can't be waved away by saying that it's just Wylie, and vice versa with Wylie providing a base for Maruca.
As of June 22nd, 2026, there were 215 fics with Maruca Chebota tagged. 4 were disqualified under N/A, although I included that in my data set.
Curiously, of the 'kids' in the main group, Maruca has the lowest number of fics; even Stina, who has comparable levels of involvement within the main book series, has quite a bit more than her at (as of July 12th, 2026) 296 fics. On the same date, Maruca has 219 (four new fics since 06/22/26). Maruca's relevancy in fics also exploded during the height of the popularity of Four Horsegirls (Marella/Maruca/Linh/Stina) and during Bianuca Week a couple years ago (Biana/Maruca). Although it's not a surprise that Maruca's popularity follows ships (as many character popularities do), it's still notable that there wasn't nearly as much interest in Maruca's character outside of ships.
Like with Wylie, many of these fics had no Maruca in them at all. 39, or 18% of her fics, did not include her, but most of these were incomplete, like with Wylie's.
The categories use the same names that Wylie's categories do, as to make the data set more approachable. In conclusion, here are the numbers with the accompanying graphs:

Summary: The process of becoming a keeper is not exactly pleasant. Tiergan helps.
My Thoughts: For those Tiertice lovers out there who don't necessarily want your soul ripped entirely out of your body (though you may be few and far between) this is the perfect fic for you. The perfect balance of hurt and comfort with some interesting elements of worldbuilding alongside tender moments.
Summary: "A quiet voice in the back of his mind comes to the realization: he is still in love. He always has been."
After fifteen years, Prentice and Tiergan have one of many much-needed conversations.
My Thoughts: This blog might have turned oops all emotional damage and for the time being I'm here for it! I'm such a sucker for vignette fics that build out a larger world but are still tethered to one moment and this does it beautifully. My heart hurts for Cyrah, for Wylie, for Tiergan and Prentice, just in general.

My Thoughts: This may be 5,000 words but I absolutely flew through it in the best way possible. Tiergan's grief is so poignant and honestly this is just a fantastic showing of what makes the Ancillary Verse so great. Heart wrenching and a bit depressing but great. The worldbuilding is lovely, the dynamic is delectable, everything comes together perfectly.

the thing that frustrates me the most about the elves' lifespans as a writer is just the concept of relative age like. who's older, alden or tiergan? could prentice and kenric have been classmates? i'm deciding who's in the same year for a foxfire fic entirely off of Vibes but i also could have it in the complete wrong order
the runner up frustration is the adults' parents btw. there's no violence elves can cure most diseases and they don't die of old age, so does that mean tiergan's parents have just been vibing while he turns into a literal rock and works with an illegal rebellion? did kenric's grandparents go to his funeral? are leto's mom and dad somewhere like "can't believe our secret twin sons just got nominated for the council hot damn." they are not convenient for any sort of plot but it's unrealistic to get rid of *both* parents and also just so hard to find plausible reasons.

weirdly specific fandom pet peeve: when people trans a character's gender and then give them a name that's a fem/masc version of their canon name/when people create deadnames for canonically trans characters that are just the fem/masc version of their canon name. Like there are definitely some trans people who are named like that (i know one lady who did that kinda thing) but in my experience it's waaaaaaaay more common to have a totally different name, and like, most of the time its like They Would Not Fucking Name Themself That.
Related: when people try to do this and don't even achieve that, because they don't know the language the character is named in. Often people think they're making the fem/masc version of a character's name, but they're using Romance language rules (names ending in -a are feminine, names ending in -o are masculine) and the language the name is from does not work like that.
I primarily see this with Japanese names ending in -ko. That's a very feminine ending! He Would Not Be Fucking Named Moniko!
If you don't know the language, seriously, just look up baby names in that language for your time period instead. As a bonus you get to play with symbolism!
