You think if you fan it like that, it'll work?
It's getting boring as shit around here.
I want to do something illegal.
Anyone willing to join me?
Anything illegal at this point sounds incredibly interesting.
The sun had suddenly emerged from behind a thick layer of clouds and Freddie raised a hand to shield his eyes from the infiltrating light. Even so, he squinted as he returned his gaze to Cole and smiled, lines fanning out from the edges of his hazel eyes. âVending machines?â he repeated, taking a few seconds to answer the question.
"Thereâs, uh, well. The cafeteriaâs in the main building. And thereâs some vending machines on the way to the pool, and in both lounges. You could say weâre, uh, pretty well stocked when it comes to food here! Saves us going into Woodbay to eat, I suppose, and that means they can keep a better eye on us." Freddie replied, pointing in the direction of each building as he listed them. "Can you find them on your own? I should, uh, really get to working on the engine." he said apologetically, jerking a thumb towards his car, next to which a toolbox sat on the ground.
Cole nodded approvingly before he stuck out his hand again and motioned for towards the direction he came from and said "Absolutely! Thank you for all of your help." He gave another glance at the car and scrunched his face up in disgust. Once he realized he was giving such a face he quickly turned it into a smile and turned around on his heel and began to head back towards the dorms again. He really was lost but he assumed that all the new kids here went through a similar event of not knowing anything and then the information just trickled to them over time.
He turned back to give a parting wave to Freddie and then he used that hand to grab a cigarette. Cole held the filter between his lips and fished around in his pocket for a lighter. He came out victorius and as he cupped around the flame to protect it from the wind he felt a harmonious balance in him where he no longer felt as scared of the school. It was much bigger than anything in his town but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
As Cole retrieved his cigarette, the small cylinder easily picked up between his lithe fingers, Freddie quickly curled his fingers into a fist and felt the metal appendages scrape against one another. It was something the teachers had been trying to tutor him on for years, how to use his power offensively, but the boy had never developed it very far. âI could,â he replied cautiously, eyes still on his transformed hand. âBut I donât want to hurt anyone. Iâm not really, a, uh⊠a fighter. I defended someone once. Thatâs about as far as I go.â he added carefully, an uneasy chuckle slipping from between his lips as he rapidly transformed his hand back to pale skin, a few freckles adorning it, and Freddie looked back at Cole.
"The teachers will love your power, though. Itâs got moreâŠpotential, is that the word? They like people who could develop into something powerful. I-In a good way. Not like an evil âIâm going to train you up to be a soldierâ way." Freddie explained, the boy careful not too give too negative an impression of the teachers at Woodbay Academy.
Cole nodded in agreement and said "I don't blame you, we're not all fighters but I'm sure that you could help in any scenario." He gave a reassuring smile, he understood the noble notion of peace. He knew that aggression wasn't everyone's favorite trait in a person, he wasn't an aggressor either.Â
As he was getting ready to speak again he stopped at the thought of people seeing his power and the potential for his powers. He didn't want to be labeled a danger, the thought that people could use him and his powers to do anything made Cole uneasy. He swallowed hard a bit more nervous now, he gave a nervous smile and said uneasily "Yeah, I mean the most I've ever used mine was anytime I needed to be over the age of twenty-one." It was true, he used it for small things like cheating on tests and buying beer but he had never thought of actually doing something with it. He decided to push the worry to the back of his mind and he put on a more reassuring smile again and added "Thank you though." It did mean a great deal to him that Freddie thought that the teachers would love him.Â
Cole then felt the familiar growl of his stomach and remembered his mission to smoke and get food. "So, do you mind if I ask you if there are any vending machines or anything around here?"
"That may or may not be a compliment depending on how many people youâve met, Charmer. Because I know heaps of interesting people here!"
"I haven't met many but I still I don't dish out such nice compliments often! I mean everyone is interesting but some people are intriguing. But anytime you're in need of charming just let me know."
"I know, Iâm a dream girl for most folks(!) Youâd be surprised how many people actually find a sexually confident woman off-putting. Not you though, it seems?"
"Quite the opposite, I find a sexually confident woman to be... well a lot of things but off putting is not one. Plus, I think you're one of the most intriguing people I've met here."
Again, that unexpectedly positive reaction. Freddie had met so many different people at Woodbay, and yet he was used to those who saw their power as either nothing special, like himself, or those who resented it. Coleâs boundless enthusiasm for something Freddie thought was rather unspectacular buoyed his mood, and he found himself mimicking the boyâs grin quickly, his hazel eyes warm.
But the expression rapidly changed from pleasure to shock as he suddenly witnessed Coleâs face change shape. It was as if, for a brief few moments, Freddie was staring into a slightly warped mirror as he saw his own face before him, and the boyâs mouth opened in surprise. His teeth clicked together as he quickly corrected the gormless expression. âWow.â he muttered, as Coleâs face returned to itâs previous guise.
"Thatâs way more impressive than mine. I mean, youâve got a lot more⊠uh, variation. So can I assume that this is your⊠normal face?" he asked hesitantly, still somewhat thrown off by seeing his own face in front of him.
The process of gaining his own face back always felt weird to Cole. His skin fit almost too tight and he brought up one of his hands to massage his cheeks. His smile was a bit smaller because of the inadvertent soreness. It felt good to have his face back, it was like coming home after a vacation. It was the first time in a while Cole focused on another person to shift into, he kept with just changing his features so changing his face felt even more odd to him.Â
Cole was also not accustomed to the idea of just using his power and showing it off. It felt good to be proud of himself, he always felt excited about his ability but in his home setting it would be frowned on if he would come home from school looking slightly like a combo of people he had seen from that day. However here showing off his face he felt a tingle of pride ripple outwards from his core.Â
As he was questioned he paused thinking over his answer "Yea, this is my natural face no addatives." He smiled and ran his tongue across the inside of his teeth before he continued. "I think that what you can do is definitely more impressive! You could do some damage with that." He went make a motion with his hand and as he removed it from his face his fingertips knocked the cigarette tucked behind his ear to the ground and he quickly scooped it up and checked the damage before placing it back behind his ear.
"Arenât you a gentleman(!) I try not to have hard and fast rules when it comes to sex. I just go with the flow!"
"You describe your lack of rules on sex as hard and fast? Almost too good to be true."
Coleâs reponse was far more enthusiastic than Freddie had imagined, but rather than intimidate him the positive reaction gave Freddie confidence and he took a step closer to his new acquaintance. A smile crossed his features as he held a hand up, palm facing the other young man. âThanks! I wouldnât say itâs, uh, too awesome though. Iâm not very good. All I can do well is this-â He stopped talking and frowned in concentration, and suddenly the skin of his hand began to shimmer lightly. It took only a few seconds for Freddieâs fingers to turn a sleek grey colour, reflecting the bright sunlight, and the metal extended to his wrist where it blended seamlessly with his normal skin.
"So, uh, thatâs it." he concluded rather lamely, dropping his hand again. Perhaps he had been too forward in his demonstration? "Do you mind if I ask what you can do?" he inquired, more timidly this time.
He felt his jaw drop as the light began bounce off and shimmer in his eyes. The air left his lungs in a slow and mesmerized exhale and he stared a little longer dazed before remembering to breathe in. He hadn't seen anything like this in anyone else and the fact that he could just do it made it even more exciting to him. He was finally meeting someone like him and it was incredibly refreshing.
"That's it?" he repeated a bit thrown that Freddie seemed to be so quiet about something that left him starstruck. "That is really cool!" he corrected and then took another breath trying to remain calm about the whole situation but another smile had made it's way to his lips and it took over his face and turned into a grin.
His response to Freddie was simply a nod and he looked over himself deciding on what he should do. His gaze wandered back to Freddie and it clicked, he shut his eyes and then he put his mind to work thinking of the traits that he possessed and he could feel the skin of his face bubbling as the genes were broken apart and connected at different places to mimic the features on his new friends face. It was an uncomfortable feeling but it only lasted a couple seconds before he opened his eyes and grinned again. He excitedly started "Shapeshifting. It doesn't last too long though."Â
"Iâm not much of a bad girl, just a merrily mischievous one. Why? Do you want to get into my stockings, Cole?"
"I mean I'm a sucker for a girl with Christmas humor. I save getting in a girls stockings for the third date though, sorry to disapoint."
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Donât  ||  Brand New
"I always did my best to stay on the good list, of course! The coal I assumed Iâd be getting was a little more uninteresting than you."
"Well I guess you missed out on some interesting holiday's then. Good thing they are yearly, you could always aim for the bad list this year."
"Oh, I wouldnât, uh, worry. There are plenty of people here who really arenât set into anything. And everyoneâs pretty friendly⊠most people, anyway." Freddie replied with a slightly uneasy chuckle, as a couple of acquaintances had come to mind that he was reluctant to describe as âfriendlyâ. The young man glanced away towards his car once more and when his gaze returned to Cole, he was surprised to see him so focused. The studious look made Freddie somewhat nervous, a few waves of anxiety beginning to roll in his stomach.
However, he did his best to reply in a calm voice. âAspect? Well, same as everyone else, really. To get taught about my power and how to use it better. I have, uh, something called metal mimicry. Means I can turn to metal, essentially.â he said, shrugging lightly.
The chuckle set Cole off a little and left him with a lingering fear that it would be harder than he had planned to fit into a niche here. He nodded as Freddie spoke to acknowledge his words which he appreciated immensely. It didn't make sense to him that someone was being nice to him with no real motive so he made sure he was being as nice as possible back.
He was interested in Freddie to say the least, where he came from there wasn't anyone else really like him and the thought that everyone here had something that made them unique and striking in their own way brought his blood pressure higher than it should be. He was fearful and yet excited and those emotions mixed inside him which caused him to gush a little "That's really awesome! I would have never thought! I-" He caught himself and brought his tone down to a more casual feel "I mean yeah that's cool." He nodded as he averted his eyes to the ground again.
"Well, Iâll tell you itâs not through dismemberment, so eliminate that. Pleasure to meet you, Cole, Iâm Sienna! Sienna Palmer for the formal thing. So are you what Santa gives to bad little children?"
"Oh, you lost me I definitely thought it was dismemberment! Glad to make your acquaintance. And as for the list I mean it depends, what list are you on?"
The wariness in Coleâs voice and expression was minimal, but it was the uncertain stance that Freddie took most notice of, and he too glanced apprehensively towards his vehicle. âI kinda get what you mean. I like to work on her more than I like to drive her. Driving just means is likely to go wrongâŠâ He explained, his voice trailing off as he realised Cole was probably nervous about something entirely different. Freddie cleared his throat awkwardly and then took a few pieces away from the car as though severing the conversation over it.
"So⊠do you know a lot of people here yet? Iâm, uh, only saying because this place can be pretty scary when you first arrive, I remember. If you needed someone who knows it then I can give you a hand." He offered amiably, flashing a brief but bright smile in the direction of his new acquaintance.
Cole nodded as Freddie spoke about the car he didn't get it but he could certainly appreciate it. He perked up more when the topic of knowing many people came up. He shrugged "I really don't know many. Everyone seems so set into things-" he sighed then added "I'll get the hang of it though, I'm a charmer!"Â
The idea that someone was being personable to him was comforting, he didn't think it was going to be easy but he found his smile hard to contain. Even if this new person had a thing for cars when Cole clearly didn't share the love it was nice. It felt good just to smile and laugh and find someone that was trying to be helpful. He realized that he'd like to know more about Freddie so he turned his attention from absently smiling to a more focused gaze and he studied the other male and questioned "So what aspect brings you here?"
"I like to do my exploring of the human body a slightly different way⊠if your know what I mean, haha! What are your other fun hobbies? Or, if you donât want to get into that, you can always start with your name."
"I definitely know what you mean. I mean I think I do. I'm Cole! I can't believe I forgot to introduce myself. Cole Evans if you're into the whole formality thing. What's yours?"
