Thank you Color for "shy anxious people who LOCK TF IN the second they get in the bedroom" soft dom representation. The way you write Waterboy (and Robert) is everything to me. I just finished reading your Dispatch fics over the course of a week (would've been less time but I have a job booooo) and they are FANTASTIC. You have such a good understanding of the characters. Your works cover dynamics you don't normally see in the Dispatch fandom, but they feel so natural and believable. Like, Robert is 1000% the kinda guy who folds as soon as he's shown genuine love and care. And (un)fortunately for him, a certain yellow-and-blue wearing water hero happens to be extremely genuine and loving...

I've had a bit of practice with my last ship. So I'm very used to soft doms who also lock the Fuck in. Sometimes I think I forget the Soft part in my Softdoms! But I'm happy you feel the opposite!

I totally understand-- take all the time you need to read. Hopefully in the future I'll have even more fics for you to enjoy, cause I promise I'm not done with them yet. My writing mood just fluctuates. And I just got a new job I'll be starting soon, so I'll be focusing on that for a bit.

It means the world to know people not only like my work, but also like my characterization! Sometimes I worry I dip into ooc, but I always try to keep the core of them, so that when I do lean into my personal preference or wants, it can still feel somewhat believable. So genuinely thank you!

And yes, Robert gives me such shelter dog vibes; he literally looks like someone who would crumble at a gentle touch. Look at this face:

(This is the face of a touch starved man; there's something so subtle in his expression here as he's touched so gently-- like he hasn't felt that in such a long long time. Hasn't had anyone look at him like this. Like he matters-- I can't help that I love making him cry and be submissive. It's his fault for looking at the audience like this! XD)

And yes, Herman wants to protect and spoil this face; and he should.

I can't help it; I'm running behind on my comments too but I promise I don't plan to stop that either (they just also can sometimes takes hours to finish), I want people to know how loved their work is and how much I appreciate their efforts. AdHoc dropped this absolute puppy of a man in everyone's lap and you fully understood the assignment. This man makes me want someone to peel away all the self protective layers of cynicism and tell him he matters just to see him melt. He has such a genuine, kind heart buried under a lifetime of burdens and I am such a sucker for that.

I totally understand the urge to write fluctuating. Sometimes you're not feeling it, and other times you get sucked into the pages, look up, and multiple hours and several thousand words just happened all of a sudden. In the meantime, much luck with your new job! I hope it goes well!

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.

Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?

What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?

Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"

Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character
