a thing that will never cease to make me emotional is how, in a world where we know swords can seal themselves from use by random people, xue yang was able to wield shuanghua apparently without issue.
The skin on Xiao Xingchenās neck looks really soft. Xue Yang wants to know if itās really as soft as it looks and he gives in to his desire to nuzzle against it. It is soft and also delightfully warm and smells really nice. Xue Yang can feel this smell at the tip of his tongue. He wants to lick Xiao Xingchenās skin, get a real taste, but instead he finds that wonderful pulsing vein. He presses his lips to it, to feel the pulse better. Xiao Xingchenās breath stutters and he freezes but not before titling his chin up to give Xue Yang better access. Xue Yang marvels at the feeling of daozhangās pulse quickening. Xiao Xincheng swallows, and his adamās apple jumps under Xue Yangās lips. Xue Yang has never felt the beat of life like this, never held it so close and observed it so quietly. He wants to feel more, so he tugs at Xiao Xinchengās collar, but is stopped, as daozhang catches his wrist.
āMy friend...ā, he breathes in warning tone.
Xue Yang lets go, Xiao Xingchen too, but he allows Xue Yang to drag his palm along his chest above his clothes. Xue Yangās hand stops above heart ā and there it is, quick and strong. Xue Yang pushes his hand against daozhangās chest, and the other doesnāt move away, but instead leans into the touch, and Xue Yang thinks that if he were to close his hand now, he would hold Xiao Xingchenās heart ā living, bleeding, beating fast because of him, for him.

Firstly, thank you SO much for taking your time to answer all our Untamed questions. Secondly: if you donāt mind, maybe you could talk about that iconic line around 4:46 of episode 27, which YouTube translates as āIf I am doomed to death, at least I could be killed by you. That would be worth it.ā I know it more or less works out to āI trust you more than I'd trust the rest of them,ā but it seems an odd thing to say regardless, so I wonder how much I'm missing.
oh hey there! I translated this line super fast in this post, but thereās⦠a lot going on in that post, and I never delved into this line in particular.
prepare for tears tears tears
Okay so first of all? The slight amount of slow motion on Wei Wuxianās withdrawal of Chenqing, and holding it out between them? Thanks, I hate it, because itās reminding me that in this show, there are maybe three instances when Wei Wuxian initiates a fight with Lan Wangji. The first time is the waterfall fight in Cloud Recesses summer school, when Wei Wuxian draws on Lan Wangji and trades a few blows before he realizes who Lan Wangji is (i.e. not an enemy combatant), at which point he promptly sheathes his sword and commences the flirting teasing. The third time is when they stand on opposite ends of a rooftop on the worst night of their lives.Ā
Meanwhile, Lan Wangji starts fights with Wei Wuxian like, all the timeĀ ā their first moonlit meeting, in the Qinghe Nie compound (and if I may indulge myself,Ā throughout all of Sunshot); Iām even inclined to give the waterfall fight to Lan Wangji as well, because he sneaked up on purpose, he was soĀ ready for that fightĀ and probably wouldāve been too happy to keep trading blows (I firmlyĀ believe that bb!Lan Wangji was ferociously competitive).Ā
But Iām getting distracted from the sads. This is the second time we see Wei Wuxian draw on Lan Wangji, and the first time we see him do so with Chenqing. Itās definitely the first time we see Wei Wuxian offer a genuine, heartbroken challenge to fight him for real ā this isnāt a sparring match anymore, this isnāt just another friendly bout between fellow cultivators. Wei Wuxian is prepared to die for what heās doing,Ā and heās prepared to let Lan Wangji be the one to kill him.
(and if Lan Wangji had fought him, right there, right then? How far would he have gone? How far would either of them have gone?)
Wei Wuxian says:Ā
čę¹ / Lan Zhan
å¦ęęåä»ä»¬ä¹é“åæ ęäøę /Ā if there must be a fight between me and them
é£ęå®ęæåä½ å³äøēę»ć/Ā then I would rather fight to the death with you.
č¦ę»ļ¼/ If I must die,
ä¹č³å°ę»åØä½ å«å åēęäø. /Ā then at least I would dieĀ by you, Hanguang-jun, at your hands
äøå¤äŗć/ I would not be wronged.
Okay! So Iāve gone back and changed some parts of my older translation to be a little more faithful to the text in order to highlight some parts I want to point out:
å¦ęęåä»ä»¬ä¹é“åæ ęäøę / if there must be a fight between me and them
é£ęå®ęæåä½ å³äøēę»ć/ then I would rather fight to the death with you.
In the first line, Wei Wuxian is fighting the entire cultivation world, one against many. He says ä»ä»¬ tamen,Ā āthem,ā the third-person plural pronoun, instead of ä½ ä»¬ nimen,Ā āall of you,āĀ the second-person plural. Then, in the second line, he emphasizes that he doesnāt think of Lan Wangji as one of them. Lan Wangji is different for Wei Wuxian; heās always been different.Ā
This is barely two episodes after Wei Wuxian says to Lan Wangji in a sunlit forest on Phoenix Mountain,Ā I had once taken you for the one who knew me,Ā and received the answerĀ I still am.
č¦ę»ļ¼/ If I must die,
ä¹č³å°ę»åØä½ å«å åēęäø. / then at least I would die by you, Hanguang-jun, at your hands
What I glossed over in my translation last time was the fact that Wei Wuxian, in this moment, specifically calls Lan Wangji by his title, Hanguang-jun. The hands are not Lan Zhanās, Lan Wangjiās ā the hands he would die at are Hanguang-junās. Wei Wuxian evokes the idealized, glorified version of Lan Wangji that the cultivation world knows him as; Wei Wuxian calls upon the Lan Wangji who is famed for his unswerving righteousness and impeccable conduct, the bearer of an impartial light that illuminates good and evil, regardless of factionalism or politics. Hanguang-junĀ is the version of Lan Wangji that Wei Wuxian trusts with the verdict on his life, and Hanguang-junĀ is the farthest from the Lan Zhan he called his ęÆēē„å·± bisheng zhiji.
(Not to keep shoving this postĀ in peopleās faces, but I have a lotĀ of feelings about how Wei Wuxian trusts Lan Wangji to take him down if he goes too far, and I donāt want to repeat them all here because I used up all of my words there)
äøå¤äŗć/ I would not be wronged.
This is probably the biggest change Iāve made in this translation ā in a previous post, I translated it asĀ āit would be worth itā because I was leaning on the č¾¾ daĀ and é ya sides of the translation triangle, and I stand by that translation as communicating the essential sentiment of the line with the least amount of confusion.
But weāre not here for easy answers on this blog, weāre here for the most painful ones ā
a lot of this sentence hinges on the word å¤ yuan, which means injustice, grievance (thanks Pleco) or, in its verb form here,Ā to be wronged. Before anyone asks, no, itās not the same yuanĀ as resentful energy ā which is ęØ ā which is a nice instinct, but alas.Ā
I personally have a lot of emotional connections with the word å¤ yuanĀ because itās one of the central themes of ćē ēę¦ćLangyabang / Nirvana in Fire, a show that keeps coming up on this blog and one I love with every fiber of my mortal being. Especially through the context of LYB, you can see how powerful of a force å¤ yuan can be ā whereas CQL, one might say, is driven by ę§ę kuihuiĀ / regret and shameĀ and how to live a life free from itĀ (from Wei Wuxianās é®åæę ę§Ā wenxinwukuiĀ to Lan Wangjiās ęęę woyouhuiĀ / I have regrets), LYBĀ in contrast is driven by å¤ yuanĀ ā from å¤ę yuanwang / wrongful treatmentĀ toĀ å¤ę” yuanan / unjust caseĀ toĀ å¤é yuanhun / the unrestful wronged spirits of the deadĀ to éŖå¤ xueyuan / to wash clean the injustice, until whatās left is white as snow.
Okay Iām getting distracted by LYB, but the point still stands ā å¤ yuan is an incredibly powerful word, and Wei Wuxianās usage of å¤ yuanĀ here encompassesĀ so fucking much:
if I die at your hands, I would not be wronged
I wouldnāt come back as a vengeful spirit
I wouldnāt haunt you for what youāve done
if I die at your hands, I would not blame you
if I die at your hands, you would be in the right
if I die at your hands, it would be worth it for me
you know me, so I trust you to lay judgment on me
and I will accept your verdict with no resentment or ill-feeling
even if that means that I die at your hands
One last dig of the knife, which is something I didnāt notice until I re-watched this line to write this post: Wei Wuxian says all of that ā Wei Wuxian says a l lĀ o fĀ t h a t āĀ with the softest, saddest smile on his face
because he knows the monumental scope of what heās asking of Lan Wangji for in that moment ā I trust you, he says in that moment, to kill meĀ ā and so that goddamn smile? That smile says two things:
thank you,Ā
and
Iām sorry
