i forgot about this blog for a while that's my bad SQUID OF THE DAY: NUMERO UNO
carribbean reef squid, more commonly known as the reef squid!
these lovely little guys have beautiful colouration! they are commonly found in small schools in the, would you believe it, carribbean sea. they can propel themselves up two metres out of the water and FLY for up to TEN METRES! pretty awesome.
they come in a wide variation of colours and are absolutely gorgeous. they eat molluscs, small fish and a variety of crustations.
they typically reach about 20cm (8 inches) in length in adulthood. eensy little fellas <3

HJU<GDBSYHJGDUSKGDUKSLJSHBKHULD so. soooo. colossal squid. they were first discovered in 1925 when some fucker found one of their arms in a sperm whale and was like 'huh. thats new' which makes their discovery 100 years old this year, coincidentally, we filmed one in their natural habitat for the first time EVER in march ACCIDENTALLY. the squid they filmed was 600 metres below the surface in the south atlantic ocean, it was 30cm long and a juvenile. the researchers who filmed it didn't like actually know it was a colossal squid and just thought it was very pretty until they took it back up and were like 'HOLY SHIT THATS A COLOSSAL SQUID' which is pretty funny to me lol.
we like. don't really know much about them at all in the slightest because we've only seen a handful alive and most of them were pretty deformed from the sudden shift in pressure from the deep sea to the surface. we DO know however that their eyes are the biggest we've EVER seen in an animal EVER at 30 cm on average for an adult which is fucking insane?? like that's huge??? they don't get much longer than the giant squid we believe but they do make up for it in mass, and the biggest one ever found was a whopping FIVE HUNDRED KILOGRAMS.
we THINK it's probably an ambush predator and eat a variety of large fish. the reason why we don't really know anything about it is because we think adults live about 900m below the surface in usually the antarctic oceans and we just straight up do not have the technology yet to traverse those areas. i don't know why i actually like them so much?? i just think they're rad
