after hearing what the upcoming mission, she paused, a thought running through her mind. "has anyone told you that you're a father to us all? honestly, i feel like you are."

He was reading a tablet when he thought their conversation was done, but apparently not. The Vanguard was surprised to say the least, it was out of no where, as he looked over to her again from his tablet. 

“ I. I don’t know what to say. ” And he didn’t. His mouth was slightly agape, many didn’t to get to see another expression on his face, and yet here he was dumbfounded. “ I try my best with all of you, to try and help anyone who comes to us for help. ” His eyes got, whimsical a little, as a small smile crossed his features. 

“ If you see me as a father then I’m proud to be him. I couldn’t be a prouder one, Guardian. ”

Zavala was taken out of his focus, his eyes were blurry as he turned to Shaxx. It must have been well into the night, probably around one a.m. from how few people are there. The last time he remembered looking up it had been...day. 

“ Shaxx, I’m sorry, I. ” He paused and sighed heavily, his shoulders relaxing down. “ I lost track of time. ” The Commander finally processed what the other had said, “ Oh, oh right. Sorry, I’ll get everything packed up, ” it was obvious he was exhausted, “ We can go home. ”

Insomnia starters

"It's nearly two in the morning, what are you doing up?"

"I'm pulling an all-nighter."

"I can't sleep."

"I'm having nightmares."

"Will you stay awake with me?"

"Why am I still awake?"

"I should've gone to bed by now, but..."

"I don't think I can sleep after that."

"It's past midnight, why are we still up?"

"Do you normally go this long without sleep?"

"God, I wish I could just pass out right about now."

"I'm an insomniac, this is just normal."

"I work best at night."

"It's that late already! But it feels so early..."

"Can we stay awake together?"

"Everything is prettier when everyone else is asleep."

"I like being the only person awake sometimes."

"Is it too late to go to bed, or should we wait for the morning?"

"I can't sleep - I've tried everything."

"Let's get you some sleeping pills."

"You should really get some rest."

It had been a long time since Zavala had seen Blaine. One of his titans that he dared called son, though he would call any Guardian that if they would let him. It was late, barley anyone in the Hall at this house, Ikora only left moments ago to get them both some food. 

“ Blaine, it’s good to see you. ” He must have been tired as he gently kissed the others forehead, and smiling like a proud father. “ How have you been? ”

It was early morning as Zavala blinked awake. He had stayed late again in the hall, but took a nap on the couch behind Shaxx’s standing area. He looked up to see the taller titan above him, his hand on his shoulder. The commander grunted as he sat up, rubbing the kinks out of his neck. He smiled up at Shaxx as he stood up, and pulling the larger man down to his level, lifting up his helmet and kissing him. 

“ Good morning Shaxx. ”

It was one of the few times Toby was visiting their apartment. He had basically become his son too, through Ikora. Zavala was happy with that, to have a family again. He went up to his son and lightly kisses his head, as the warlock was on the couch reading something.

The Commander woke with a start as he saw Shaxx put his helmet back on. He looked at the hall and how empty it was, and that he must had fallen asleep standing up, again.

He smiled lazily, and returned the kiss to the side of Shaxx’s helmet.

Felix waved a hand at the bartender to get her attention and took a swig of beer as the woman came over.

“Two shots of whiskey, please. One for me and one for the Commander.” Ikora would hear a few words from her later, but Zavala was right. It’d make all of them happier if they just tried to have a nice evening- not that it would make Felix any less anxious about the social interaction. “So… there have been some interesting Eliksni movements near the south sector of the Steppes. Looks like they’ve found some sort of resource in the tunnels there.” She paused. “That’s not what normal people talk about with friends, is it?”

“ It is normal for us, all things considered, are we truly normal people? ” He joked as he held the shot in his hand. “ I suppose we could talk about something else, but in all honesty, this is fine with me, Felix. ” Zavala looked back over at her, “ Besides, any movement from the Eliksni is always interesting, if always worrisome for me. I’m sure they found a food stash among other things. ” He took his shot, and grimaced. He hasn’t had a shot of anything in so long.

Felix stared in disbelief at her comm display and set down her barely-touched beer with a clack. The chatter of the bar around her seemed to grow louder and more obnoxious as she turned to Zavala with a grimace.

“Ikora has… called out. So I guess it’s just you and me.” She tried not to let her discomfort show on her face as she raised her glass in a mock toast. “Uh, do you want another drink? Or should I get the check?”

He simply looked over at her, doing a little snort laughter, “ Of course she did, ” as he took another drink from his cup. “ That would be wonderful, if she’s not going to be here, then the least I can do to get revenge is to have a good time right? ” Zavala joked, a lazy smile on his face. 

“ She does this all the time, don’t worry about it, I’m not that scary when away from the table I hope. ” He raised his glass to the other’s beer, clinking them together gently before drinking all that was in his glass.

(So I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and since we know nothing about Zavala’s past life so a lot of this is just headcanons. So here we go :)

“ Shaxx I’m not going to take sides in this. ” He sighed out for the 20th time. Zavala was rushing towards his home, having an armful of tablets and records to organize and read. “ You know full well the implications of your actions the second you did them during Gap. ” The newly made Vanguard Commander was so tired of this really. He was tired of everything.

In all honesty, Zavala didn’t think he was going to be Titan Vanguard or Commander, he always thought Shaxx would have taken it, he thought Shaxx would ultimately have been a good choice. But then Twilight Gap happened, and he disobeyed a direct order from Saladin and it made an absolute mess of things, and by now Zavala was sighing every five seconds. Any feelings he had for both of them were strained and hurt. When Shaxx mentioned how Zavala knew Shaxx deserved to be the Commander was when he was done.

“ Shaxx. I know, I didn’t expect to become the Commander, I wasn’t racing towards it like a competition like you were. This wasn’t part of any of our plans, but it’s the way it happened. Leave It Be. ” His eyebrows furrowed at the appointed Crucible handler and when Shaxx didn’t say anything he quickly moved back towards his apartment. 

Once he was inside he dropped everything onto his coffee table and collapses on the couch. He already missed when they could make jokes with each other before Saladin made the joke worse in some way and they all ended up laughing so hard that their guts hurt for the rest of the day.

He sighed one more time and shut his eyes before picking up a tablet and began shuffling through new information.

It was like she’d broken every bone at once. Something inside simply snapped - in half, then again, and shattered into a hundred thousand pieces more, piercing her through with gut-wrenching pain. But she barely felt it.

All she felt was the disconnect.

Numbness was a word for it. Dissociation was another. Some part of her very soul - no, all of it, surely - had just…stepped outside of her body and walked away. The physical weakness befalling her had not registered yet, and wouldn’t for what were perhaps the longest moments of her life - even longer than the first time she’d lost a partner. No, what struck her first and foremost was the realization that she was alone: Something she had not been in centuries.

She tried crying out across the void. Zavala’s Light was not there; she could not feel Cayde’s electric warmth. She felt nothing in response to her violent pleas into the realm of Light. Her anguish at the loss of her love poured through her lips instead. It sounded like a cry of mourning.

Ikora hit the ground hard as the Cabal carrier she’d hijacked crashed into the burning City below. Thrown from the wreckage before she could be caught underneath, she dragged herself out of harm’s way long enough to attempt to connect to the last emergency frequency she knew to try, though it remained untested and unused. 

Serapis, enter comm frequency 4143–… Serapis–? Sera…. 

Thank the Traveler she’d pulled on her helmet before the carrier had started to spiral too far out of control. Utilizing the neural connections within her HUD interfacing, she managed to pull up the channel herself. 

“Frequency 4143, this is Ikora Rey - please–” She choked for a moment, beginning to feel the pain striking out like lightning through her limbs, “Please respond.” A moment of static, and nothing more. 

“4143, respond, ASAP–”

There was nothing like what he felt, which was truly nothing. It was close to the void, the disconnect to everything around you as he fell onto the ground, his fist crashing down to hold himself up at he felt everything in his head and body go numb. It felt cold and quiet, he didn’t remember how to feel as he felt his warmth drift away. Zavala couldn’t remember who he was, or what he was doing as he stared at the ground. 

Then he remembered a name, “ Ikora, ” He called out, tried to feel out for her, but nothing, and nothing from Cayde when he remembered him. It felt like parts of the numbness of his brain and body was replaced with static, over writing everything with it. He looked around as his eyes tried to focus again. 

“Pl....se respon-” A crackle, and not like the static burrowing into his skull, he could focus on that as he grunted up and rested himself on the wall. 

“4143,resp-” Failsafe, he had to activate Failsafe. That’s what he was doing. 

“ This is Commander, ” He grunted as he pushed himself forward towards the data banks, “ Zavala. I’m here, and ready to respond if needed. ” He tilted his head towards the broken wall, slowly making his way to the rooms, everything felt too heavy to move, but he did. “ Where are you. ” The panic set in his voice as the situation crashed onto him. 

The Commander couldn’t feel his Lightbond, his Ghost, or himself as he shuffled through the debris, trying his best to stay in reality.
