on today’s installment of major margaret houlihan is adorable and i love her: despite the robe being a gift from frank, the scene in “mail call again” when she opens her mail is so cute

you can read my full thoughts on ‘in love and war’ here but to me these shots exemplify how and why this episode is less about the romance and more about hawkeye’s relationship to american imperialism and the war; even in his most earnest attempts to support kyung soon, he doesn’t fully understand the impact that his own actions play in the war machine despite his unwillingness to participate, and this to me is shown most obviously in the funeral procession for kyung soon’s mom. i understand that in-universe the uniform is the nicest clothing hawkeye has (besides the tux) and he’s of course wearing it to be respectful. how ironic is it that ultimate anti-war peacemonger hawkeye pierce wears a US military uniform to the funeral service of a korean woman who died because of the direct impact of american imperialism and war??

if mash was a bit better and a bit more not from the 70s, they should have done an episode almost entirely in korean with subtitles from the point of view of the locals. like it would still have the main gang in but it would be fairly in the background and only through the lens of what the koreans are doing. i think that would be a really interesting way of examining the intrusion of the war onto the people who were there first

Is anyone??? Gonna talk??? About how Klinger traded GOOD FOOD FROM HOME for a Life magazine with a special about Maine FOR HAWKEYE with zero intentions to make it known that he did anything special to get it. Just gave it to Hawk with a shrug and a “If ya wanna read something you can have this,” like he didn’t immediately recognize pictures of Maine in some rando’s magazine and immediately offer to trade what was probably the most valuable thing he owned at the time with only Hawkeye in mind.
