things nobody warns you about when you start reading the goblin emperor:
if you spend enough time thinking about it thou wilt start talking to thyself in the familiar first person
some hyper famous artists like Van Gogh transcend overratedness and become underrated because they're so normalized. Like I'll look at a van Gogh and I'm like wait this really is amazing you guys don't get it
Shakespeare is like this
Every time I see a Van Gogh that’s not one of his better known pieces it absolutely blows me away
Have you seen this shit my liege? smh unreal
"she's bad as fuck? is she able to improve?" has not left my brain for days

Man, I'm listening to this podcast that is not actually about writing novels or being an author or any of that, but one of the hosts has published a novel and sold the movie rights to Amazon and I think is currently on a book tour (so it's all very clearly on her mind), and one of the things she says is how in order to get to where she is, you have to want it so bad. You have to be ambitious as hell. You have to be cutthroat. You have to be ready to do anything you need to do to get as many eyeballs on your art as possible.
And it's just got me thinking... if that's the state of publishing today, if, as she states outright, there are authors who examine the industry and decide exactly what kind of book they want to write before writing it in order to maximize exposure, if hustler and influencer culture is the only way to get to where she is, doesn't that mean the stories that get published are all going to have one very specific viewpoint in them? Aren't we limiting the kinds of voices we hear from? And doesn't this kind of shit absolutely flatten creativity?
