The dating convention in star wars fandom is deeply annoying but it has the one redeeming feature which is that you can assume any inconsistencies or timeline issues are due to the system itself being annoying and confusing. Oh every planet seamlessly switched to ABY/BBY and updated all their archives? Nothing got confused in translation? Sssuurree. No one in universe uses that thing

technically, star wars is supposed to be a period piece. it says right there in the crawl that it happened a long time ago. So. Obviously the dating system is a bit like Tolkein 'translating' the hobbit, right? I think that galaxy mostly did NOT have a standardized dating system. The empire probably tried to make one stick for a while but it didn't last. Wookiepedia's attempts at glueing it together contain way too much conjecture and guesswork. That's what i say.
