On of the less intuitive things about love, I've found, of any kind, is the importance of needing things.

I didn't realize it until recently, but I've always seen love as something requiring sacrifice, selflessness, patience, and generosity- to ask for nothing is to be the best person I can be, small and quiet and never in the way, always happy and helpful, self-sufficient and present when desired.

It's only as an adult, now, that I'm beginning to see the selfishness of wanting nothing.

I cut my friend's hair in my kitchen the other day. They wanted a trim and I had the skills, so I offered, and was genuinely excited when they stopped hesitating over "bothering me" and took me up on it. It was a peaceful afternoon, and we had tea and chatted for an hour or more.

My brother and I shared popcorn at the movies a while ago. When I came time to pay, I pulled my card out like a wild western sheriff and slapped it on the machine before he could fight me for it first. The satisfaction was delightful.

Someone called me crying on the phone the other day. Kept apologizing for disturbing me at work, talking about how they were bothering me on my lunch break. I was telling the truth when I told them that really, I was flattered and honored and relieved, knowing that if they were hurting I would know, that I didn't have to worry in silence. It felt good to hear them slowly come down, and to know that they knew it would be better soon, and to hear them laugh wetly on the other end. We're getting together for a visit next week.

It's hard to need things, if you've trained yourself not to. It's hard to want things, when you don't know how to want anymore. Trusting people is difficult, and so is relying on them, but I don't know where I'd be without the people who rely on me.

I've heard a lot of people say, "Nobody will love you unless you love yourself". I've had a lot of thoughts about it. It's not right, but it's not wrong, either, I think.

"Nobody will love you unless you love yourself"... I've always taken that to mean, "You will not be lovable until you develop a positive view of yourself as a person".

Now, I think it's sort of inside-out.

"Nobody will love you unless you love yourself"... because nobody can show their love to you in a way that you can accept until you treat yourself kindly, and learn what you need, and what you want, and how to ask for it, and then give that vulnerability away.

Love, for me, is someone I ask for a ride to the airport. Whether they end up doing this or not is irrelevant.

It's not needy, or selfish, or taking up energy. It's giving the gift of being wanted, and needed, and thought of. It's giving someone the security of being part of someone's life.

I said this in my original tags but media literacy in my mind is the same idea as like, grammar within creative writing. when we talk about creative writing a lot of times we say stuff along the lines of you have to know the rules before you break them in reference to things that are technically wrong according to formal grammar — ie using "and" at the beginning of a sentence, ending a sentence with a preposition, other traditional grammar rules. in creative writing using words the "wrong" way can be a stylistic choice or even something that gives insight into your characters. it's the same concept in media analysis and reading comprehension: you have to be able to take in what the author is saying before you can decide to dig into something else. to use my original example, you can look at a Doctor Who episode that's about a specific theme and instead choose to focus on the Doctor-Companion ship, but you have to acknowledge that there is a theme that the writer meant for you to see and you are choosing to make it about something else. and there's nothing wrong with that! you can focus on your ship and that is a perfectly valid way to engage with a fandom! but if you're not engaging with the actual themes at all, then you can't claim reading comprehension about that specific thing. another example is that it's totally fine to write characters differently than they would be written in canon, but pretending that you're not actively taking a different lane on the highway than the character's original writer is just poor media literacy.

I hate the defense of "but Anakin still has good in him!" You know what? Yeah. He did. He still had good in him. It doesn't change the fact he actively chose to ignore it at best and slaughter, at the bare minimum, hundreds (more likely thousands) of innocent people. So they can say all they want about how Anakin still had good in him. It doesn't matter. You can have all the good in the world inside you and it won't mean a thing if you choose to be evil.

The number of people Anakin has killed sort-of depends on whether you're counting direct AND indirect kills, but... yeah I'd definitely go for thousands of direct kills at minimum given the level of destruction Anakin is seen to commit. If we count indirect kills it goes up into the many millions.

But regardless, Anakin having the capacity for good has always been the point, from either direction. Because that's literally the whole message of the story. Good people are entirely capable of making selfish, evil choices, and bad people are equally as capable of making better choices. That's the core of Anakin's story, so his capacity for good is absolutely necessary in order to understand the message. But it goes both ways.

Anakin having good in him is a hopeful thing, it's a message about how even the worst people CAN change sometimes, how no matter how far you THINK you've fallen that you can always get yourself back up and choose to be someone else. And I think a lot of people cling to the hopeful aspect of Anakin having good in him because, well, it feels better. It's a lot NICER to think about this half of the message. It's certainly the simpler, easier half.

But Anakin having good in him is also a major aspect of the cautionary tale. As you said, Anakin has good in him, but it didn't stop him from continuing to make evil choices. Anakin having good in him didn't save the Tuskens, or the Jedi, or the clones, or Alderaan. "Having good in you" isn't enough if you aren't choosing to ACT ON IT. "Having good in you" isn't an excuse for making selfish choices. "Having good in you" isn't enough to keep you from being a villain. This message is a LOT more uncomfortable to look at and acknowledge and work with than the other one, and so people who tend to relate to Anakin and sympathize with him more ALSO often tend to look at this particular half of the story a LOT LESS (some of them refuse to look at it at all and will deny it even exists).

But both messages are less interesting and nuanced on their own. The two of them TOGETHER encompass what makes Anakin's story so incredibly compelling. It's not JUST the hope of being able to come back from your worst choices or that people will love you in spite of them. And it's not JUST the tragedy of someone who started with good intentions knowingly walking themselves down the road to hell. It's BOTH. The tragedy and the hopeful triumph work together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. They're both GOOD alone, but they're GREAT when combined. And you don't get that without acknowledging that Anakin was good once and had good in him still throughout his tenure as a villain, but you have to acknowledge ALL of what that means, not just the part that's easier to swallow.
