My (current) problem with historical danmei.
How do readers get past the age gaps in many historical danmei? I'm not talking about 30 year old MCs with 50+ year old MLs (since they're legal adults) and vice versa.
I mean like, MCs/MLs in their teen years, who are already somewhat affectionate with their future partners, who are like over 20 years old?
I'm aware that because the novels are written in a historical setting, age gaps like that aren't too weird to come across, but I can't help but feel a little irked whenever I come across it. I understand that maybe the way the story is written and the circumstances that happen in the novel don't make it textbook pedophilia, but I want someone to explain to me how it isn't.
It's one of the many reasons why I decided to drop 2ha for the time being, and also (recently) reconsider reading Joyful Reunion from my tbr (which was something I really looked forward to reading).
Anyway, I don't intend this message to be a way to bash people who read these kinds of tropes and dynamics. I won't keep this post up for a long time but I really need someone to guide me with this. Please be respectful in responding to this post, if you have any opinions.
