Yesterday, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit areas along central and southeastern Myanmar. The earthquake was centered around 20 km from Sagaing and Mandalay cities, two of the most populated areas within the country.
This earthquake is the first of its kind to take place in Myanmar in 71 years. A majority of buildings in Mandalay have sustained some form of damage, while landmarks such as the Old Sagaing Bridge and the entrances to the Mandalay moat were destroyed. The damage is rampant, with the earthquake being felt in Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing, Yangon Regions and Shan State, and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory. While the amount of human casualty and injured persons is not known yet, the scale of destruction caused by the earthquake is unimaginable. Multiple important roads leading to cities, train tracks, and airports have all been damaged.
Without an able government to provide support, this situation will most likely only be in the hands of civilians to find a solution. The military junta, while asking for help from the international community, do not have the mechanisms to carry out relief efforts nationwide.

I'm a bit tired but here's some local news about Myanmar earthquakes. The death toll is around 1600 in total (both in thai and myanmar) and rising because help only arrived yesterday. There were several more earthquakes/aftershocks in Myanmar, around 60 of them including a 5.5 scale earthquake in Nay Pyi Daw. People in Mandalay are suffering from power outages and a lot of phones are still out of service over there, making it difficult to ask for help or to find usable water. People in Sagaing were immediately bombed during the night of the earthquake, and right now it's been more than 48 hours without electricity. Sagaing is also cut off of motor oil and other products since the old Sagaing bridge fell down, and the new one has not been allowed to use, nor the other things allowed to pass. The path is controlled tightly by the military junta. I'm still in contact with a few people in sagaing and in mandalay since they still have access to the internet, but power outages might cut our connections off completely. A lot of people in those areas are trying to get a hold of solar powered devices, motor oil, water (for showers and toilets) and are really scared.
It's summertime in Myanmar, which means areas like Sagaing or Mandalay will be over 32 degrees celsius by day and it will be quickly rising. A lot of people are suffering from heatstroke. The heat would only be briefly contained by Thingyan Rain (a small amount of rain marking the time of the water festival) but raining would make it hard for people in Mandalay who are having to sleep on streets, parks and stadiums so it is imperative that we build some things back up for temporary stays, at least so that people won't die of exposure either. And it doesn't help that we have too many mosquitoes, which might lead to malaria and dengue fever during this season.
A lot of foreign aids have arrived but most of them are being blocked by the military junta or are being directed to Nay Pyi Daw rather than Mandalay or Sagaing, which were more messed up but Nay Pyi Daw has more of the junta's personnel, giving them the priority.
We actually don't know the death toll or the destruction in Sagaing, even though it's the most vulnerable place, due to the military junta's bombing and airstrikes. The power outage and the signal loss only ensures more destruction over there.
I hope y'all can share this news far and wide because most people don't know about the updated death tolls. And I'm chronically ill and in the middle of a flare up so I can't cite sources yet but look up certain keywords from this post and you'll be able to see a lot of articles about these from reliable sources. It's just that most local news are ignored unless you specifically look them up.
Meant to make this post a few days ago but i just wanted to send all my love and support for everyone in Myanmar right now. For those unaware, Myanmar was recently with a level 8.2 earthquake, causing massive structural damage, taking and endangering thousands of lives. Historical and current capitals Mandaly and Napyidaw have been especially hit hard, with buildings, bridges and roads destroyed and many people displaced. The government is virtually useless so any and all donations are appreciated. $5? $10? $50? Whatever you can spare is incredibly appreciated

in feburary of 2021, myanmar's military siezed control from the elected government in a coup. ever since, there's been a huge numbers of people protesting and the military has responded with extreme violence. many people have been killed, imprisoned, and displaced. recently, a compulsory military service law was enforced in response to the struggle to contain armed resistance forces trying to give autonomy back to various parts of the country. all men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 will have to serve for up two years, specialists like doctors aged up to 45 will have to serve for up to three years. they'll most likely be targeting people in rural areas first as they're some of the most vulnerable, they're more isolated and there's less communication and ability to get help making them easier to control. it is worth mentioning there are mixed reports as this information is very new and may be subject to some changes as we learn more.
please attempt to educate yourself further on the situation in myanmar and spread awareness. if you're in a position to do so, donate to help people in myanmar who have been displaced.
Me and many others have tried to take comfort in the fact that the Mandatory Military Enlistment is a sign that the Junta is getting desperate and that they're losing on multiple fronts, but it's a cold comfort especially when the new enlistments will almost certainly be thrown onto the front lines as human shields. Please PLEASE share and boost news about Myanmar, you and me have the privilege of being able to speak about it freely but so many Burmese people I know don't feel safe saying anything online.
