on the days that he feels especially down, he convinces himself that the answer is a negative.

“‘m not doing anything!” Zoe protests.

“Stop looking at me!”

“You’re looking at me!”

“No I’m not!”

“Yes you are!”

around the same time you stop using Connor’s abuse toward Zoe to overlook her abuse toward him.

Like yeah, he was abusive to her and that’s not okay, but also she constantly invalidated him at home and at school. She knew that he had trouble making friends and still she called him a psychopath to his peers behind his back. That’s also emotional abuse. They were both incredible shitty toward each other, so you shouldn’t treat Zoe like she didn’t do anything wrong.

I would like to add to this by saying that yes, Connor shouted at Zoe, however, who’s to say she didn’t cause this?

We don’t know what Connor’s mental illnesses were, however, if it’s BPD (like a lot of people hypothesize) there has to be a reason for him getting angry.

In the first scene with the Murphy’s Zoe starts off the argument and conflict between her and Connor (from what we see) by saying he’s definitely high.

By being cornered like this of course Connor was going to explode and say ‘fuck you’

She retorted with the same.

When Zoe’s mom said to her that it’s not constructive Zoe replied with ‘are you kidding me’

Of course what Connor did isn’t okay. What Zoe did isn’t okay either and people need to recognize that all these characters are grey! They’ve all done things wrong and they’ve all done things right!

The way he treated her was not her fucking fault! And being upset over that treatment and not being very nice about how he treated other people is not emotional abuse, especially given that she did care about him. She defended him to her parents in the end. She did love and miss him, she was distant from him because he took out his own issues on her and threatened to kill her. Calling him a psychopath is nowhere near comparable to what he did to her and flippantly throwing around the term “abuse” to describe her antagonizing her brother is a really shitty way to handle the topic. Did she treat him perfectly? No. But mutual abuse is not a thing, and she did not abuse him. His treatment of her was not a matter of course, even if he did have BPD, and mental illness is no excuse to treat someone the way Connor treated Zoe.

All anyone is asking from this fandom is that Zoe not be blamed for her abuse and that Connor’s mental illnesses be used to excuse his behavior because doing so further stigmatizes mentally ill people. Connor is a likable character who deserves love and support, but the way he treated Zoe was wrong and it’s okay to acknowledge that, and frankly, as someone who has dealt with a situation similar to what Connor did to Zoe, it’s incredibly insulting to see people saying that it was her fault or that she somehow caused it.
