“Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” is too often (incorrectly) used as a cover-all tag, on fics ranging from Vaguely Uncomfortable to Serious Shit, as a replacement for any intense tags relating to the story. People will use it to say “Holy shit guys some INTENSE SHIT happens in this story” without actually saying what that Intense Shit™ is.
In actuality, the “Dead Dove” tag is meant to be used in addition to other warning tags. Pulled from a scene from the show Arrested Development (look it up on YouTube!), it means “Hi! Hey! I labeled this fic to warn you of what’s in it, so you might REALLY want to read those labels! This fic is exactly what it says on the tin! The tags are accurate! Don’t say I didn’t warn you, because this is me warning you! Read the tags!”
So before you accidentally use the “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag without context, here’s your preemptive lesson for next time. Please tag your fics accordingly! Ta!
earlier this year 2 boys got expelled from my school for going on a teachers email and sending another teacher an email that says “you’re a disgusting little man” and i laugh about it all the time because imagine opening an email from your coworker and thinking it’s important and then it says that
there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
I've been thinking about my JAS AU OCs lately... especially Bloodrayne. So I will blast you with an INFODUMP! Cause LOOK at this guy. Just look at him. Horrible Creature that you will Learn More about today.
SO! ANYWAY! He's really, REALLY neat, I think. ...By that, I mean, neat in the way that makes you want to throw him into a volcano and never let him see the light of day ever again. Because you WILL want to do that.
They're a very, "I've been hurt so I will hurt other people," kind of person. And boy do they absolutely DO THAT! They make an active EFFORT to do that. To literally Everyone. ...Except Nix, sometimes. But especially KO. Because he decided he didn't like him and wants to make his life as miserable as possible.
...OKAY! HOLD ON! LET'S STEP BACK FOR A SECOND. There are a LOT of questions to ask here! Why in COB's name is he like this? Why do they have beef with KO in particular? What the hell is up with this guy?
There's a LOT to go over so go ahead and grab your popcorn and sour strips and wrap yourself in your blankets! We got a LONG ride ahead of us BELOW THE CUT!
TO START... as with all of my JAS OCs, there are SOME details that are still kind of loosely hanging in the air, but most of if it properly laid out and solid. Such aaasssss... his relationship with Nix! Because he and Nix are partners. And I can't imagine their relationship is Super Healthy but it is... Something! He DOES live with him and Nix probaaabbllyyy lives with one of his own family members. Like, a cousin, or something.
ANYWAY! Their relationship is generally a work-in-progress, just like Rayne's lore. Which is that he was raised in a cult. ...Allegedly. This is what he's told Nix, anyway! And Nix'll tell other people that she helped him get out, but the story from Both of these guys seem all over the place. ...In a lot of areas. Maybe one day, they'll both figure out how to talk about their lore /j and how they met and all that fun stuff... but for now, it remains a mystery! For EVERYONE!
OH-KAY! RAMBLE OVER! ...That ramble, anyway! Those are the few things that are still being thrown around in this brain of mine. The rest is settled! Mostly. Now let's get into the DETAILS! On everything ELSE!
Like I said earlier, he's very "I've been hurt so I'll hurt other people." And he acknowledges this. He KNOWS this. And he doesn't care. He doesn't WANT to change. Why would he? It's already been pushed into his mind that he's just an Evil Guy that will never be good and will only ever hurt people. And you can't change an objective fact. ...That's his mindset, anyway. Who hurt this guy?
AND! If you were to ask him if he tried, he'd say that he did. That he tried going to POINT Prep and got denied because he's Bad and Horrible and Awful and Evil and can Never Be Good. While actively leaving out the detail that he was declined because he did a whole Fake Friend thing and Elodie shut that down REALLY FAST.
And now, here he is, an unspecified amount of time later, working at the bodega, as a stockboy. They told Mr. Gar that they were trying to better themself as a person to try and get into POINT Prep again, which, hey! They seem like a misguided teen that wants to try and do good in the world. Man, they really DO have this lying thing down. In reality, he's just here because he needs a job. And doesn't want to explain the negative power level on his POW Card.
...RIGHT. I REALIZED THAT I DIDN'T EXPLAIN THAT THIS AU IS POST-CANON.
Rad and Enid aren't currently at the Bodega because of the Space General and Witch College stuff. KO took a brief, few month break from the Boedga because there are a LOT of life events going on. Carol and Gar are getting married, KO still does hero missions sometimes, and he's 14-15 years old so he's gotta deal with Almost Highschool. By the time he starts working again, there are FOUR new guys! Echo, Nix, Blade, and, of course, Rayne!
BONUS FACT! Rayne antagonizes Blade the most because they LOVE to get a reaction out of xir. There is a LOT of beef between them. I could ramble about this at some point in a different post... BUT! They always aim to get reactions out of Blade and this continues even when his main target is KO. ...Who he pretends to be friends with.
Rayne is... FINE with KO. He doesn't really like him. Subtle mean behavior that isn't super obvious. Think of your typical genuinely really horrible bully that does very subtle things to fuck with you that go under the radar and can be hard to pick up on. Subtle things! He's like this with Everyone. KO is no different. Just another dumb coworker. But THEN he finds out that KO has some Really Big connections to POINT. Like, REALLY, REALLY BIG!!
BECAUSE! His MOM! His DAD! His STEPDAD! Who is also THEIR boss! He's FRIENDS with the LEADER of POINT AND knows the FORMER leader of POINT. And, now, suddenly, KO is a Big Deal. And Rayne realizes that maybe he can get into POINT if he becomes friends with this kid. As in, like, a Personal Recommendation. So he starts being a bit nicer to KO. Whicchhh... yep! There's the Fake Friend thing! At least he's trying to actually Pretend to be nice.
ANYWAY THIS DOES NOT LAST! Because Rayne becomes VERY jealous of KO. He has everything set out for him to become a hero. It's RIGHT THERE, right in front of his face. And yet he's chosing to throw ALL of it AWAY by NOT going to POINT. The chance for that is being held out in front of him on a very giant silver plate and he's IGNORING that for, what, this dumb minimall? What is so great about this Piece of Shit Plaza that KO decides he wants to work here as a hero instead of becoming part of the greatest hero organization of all time?
TO BE FAIR. Rayne was ALWAYS jealous. But this, THIS ESPECIALLY, pisses them OFF. And they fucking HATE him.
They fact they're pretending to be KO's friend was kind of always there. He always had an off vibe about their friendship cause it REALLY didn't seem genuine. Buuutttt he just kind of went with it because he IS a nice kid! But then the Vibe kind of Shifts and KO KNOWS at this point that they're not friends. BUT BOY OH BOY THEY ARE COMMITTED TO THE BIT! There's a LOT to this that I could ramble about for a LONG TIME, but I can pretty much sum up Rayne's behavior as Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss.
WHICH. THERE'S A LOT OF SHIT HE DOES. AND SAYS. The one thing in particular that stands out to me, that I think about often, is that Rayne introduces him to the concept of self-harm.

I often think about this scene and just how genuinely fucked up it is. Because it is HORRIBLY fucked up. This is pretty much EXACTLY how I imagined it going:

KO is sitting in a corner in the break room after SOMETHING happened. The kid is horrifically stressed out. This is maybe about the early point of the middle of the AU, so there's been a lot of time for things to have gotten tense and his mental health getting to the point where he's heavily on-edge.
Rayne gets up and goes over and sits next to them. "Y'know, I get it. Shit sucks. But there ARE people out there in worse situations than you."
"...I know."
"You just gotta get used to it. Y'know, suck it up and deal with it. Find ways to suck it up when you feel like shit."
"..."
"Hmph. Lucky for me, I know a few coping mechanisms to get me through those hard times. Might be good to learn some of those."
"Really?"
"Yep. Sometimes, when you're feeling really bad, and all that shit is building up inside of you, and you gave nothing else to do and nobody to talk to, you need to take it out on yourself."
"...Huh??"
"ESPECIALLY when it's your fault. And when you're feeling all angry and helpless and useless, you gotta put that energy SOMEWHERE, right?"
"I— I guess...???"
"It's always better to put it right back where it came from."
"I—"
"I recommend something sharp. Literally anything works, you just gotta take it and slice it. Like this." He doesn't ACTUALLY demonstrate it, but he makes the motions of doing it with his fingers/hands.
"..."
"Iiiiiiiiiii... don't think I like that." KO slowly scoots away, "no thanks."
"Pfftt, yeah, alright, whatever. You say that now, but, trust me, you'll know what I'm talking about when you actually need it. It's the best coping mechanism you got."
AND THAT SCENE ENDS THERE! And this does... not age well on KO's end. And it's Not Great when that happens. I WILL NOT GET INTO THAT HERE, because that doesn't happen for a LONG WHILE after, but if anyone is curious on that, I am always okay with rambling in another post! It's... not great. For anyone. Rayne is actively trying to make KO as miserable as possible because HE'S miserable and... augh. Genuinely a horrible person.
