As an Arknights fan of 5 years (soon 6)
Endfield is disappointing
The story so far doesn't give me the same Arknights vibes I know and love... Let me explain by listing a few things that bother me so far :
Landbreakers : the dialogue calling them "scum" and other pejorative names, judging them for practicing their (pagan ?) religion. They're obviously in the wrong for raiding and pillaging, but I think their anger is justified because they're being discriminated against. We aren't the "good guys" in this situation
Originium : Arknights has a whole 15+ chapters about the dilemma surrounding originium. How despite the incurable deadly illness associated with it and the social and politic conflicts it causes, nations are becoming more dependant on it because it's an abundant energy source that facilitates industralisation and the advancement of technology. Yet there is still no cure for oripathy (only treatments to suppress most symptoms) and the best way to deal with it remains prevention by wearing equipment. The only thing that they managed to solve is the discrimination against the Infected, as it is mentioned in passing and spoken about like a thing of the past (understated and shrugged off). The main story shows an Infected little girl who lives in poverty with her older brother : they don't have any equipment. The people Perlica wants to protect from the Landbreakers can't even be protected from oripathy. Overall, it's just frustrating because it's something that could have easily been avoided by not planting the mega death mineral on another planet ? The lore writing would have already been better if they said they found an originium derivative on Talos-II or something
Story : it's cliché ? Amnesiac mc like in Arknights, but instead of escaping a city being invaded and burning to the ground because of the main antagonist faction, the Endministrator has weird but vague visions then it's suddenly revealed that they've been sleeping for 10 years. Yet they're also doing fine (how advanced is medicine then ?) and go around fighting, collecting resources, building bases and repairing machinery (even though they're the CEO and they have plenty of employees to do the job). For the enemies, there's the Aggeloi creatures that spawn from pillars falling from the sky and there's the "mysterious" attractive main antagonist manipulating the humanoid mobs to do her bidding (who's later revealed in a cutscene). I'm not even sure what we're fighting and why ? Besides the obvious "they're hostile and attack us so we fight back to defend ourselves" reason
Tutorials : the invasive 500 tutorials that either repeat the same info or explain nothing, no in-between. I spent about 10 mins trying to fix my factory, because they didn't explain which way I should be putting those machines with the ports on both sides. They also don't seem to explain how to fix clogging ? The simulations have me wondering why they don't make the player directly build on their actual world. Isn't that what a tutorial is for ? They feel like a waste of time for so little explanation and petty rewards. The building UI doesn't feel intuitive and I do not enjoy pressing 50 buttons to do something that could have taken less and still work. I guess they wanted to favour style over practicality ?
Character design : I got Last Rite on beginner banner and started crashing out because of her outfit.I don't get how she's supposed to be a Nachzerer Sarkaz ? I also dislike how she keeps moaning and whining so often, it feels overboard. Anyway, most of the character designs are terrible. God. I feel like if I showed this to my art teacher back when I majored in arts they would have shot me in the back. I also have a hard time telling what races they are ? Which is a downgrade from Arknights
Bonus : the Paypal incident. Look it up if you haven't it's wild
Endfield just doesn't feel like Arknights. Imo, this is just some kind of Hoyo-style slop with the Arknights brand on top as some sort of coat of paint. Endfield doesn't have the inherent charm Arknights has. They seem to have thrown "what makes Arknights what it is" out of the window for outdated marketing and to cater to a larger audience ?
I'll keep playing to see if they improve in the future, but I might just drop the game if they don't
