Ozempic scares the shit out of me. You're telling me there's a drug that takes away both the craving side of hunger and targets the brain's rewards center for eating. You're telling me it takes the joy out of eating and it turns you into a skeleton. Why did we turn The Curse of the Black Pearl into a drug. What the fuck.
I actually want to thank the diabetics coming on this post like "actually it genuinely is a great treatment for diabetes and it hasn't affected my mood or my enjoyment of food. The real issue is it's getting abused as a weight loss drug which also makes it scarce and more expensive for those who can genuinely benefit from it." Kind of reminds me of the time my brother got permission from our family psychiatrist to try my ADHD medication and his reaction to it was "what the fuck are you on. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ON. WHY DO I FEEL LIKE CRYING. YOU'RE ON THIS EVERY DAY!?!"
Body chemistry! It makes a big difference in how your body processes a drug! What can be genuinely helpful for some folks is The Curse of the Black Pearl for others!
So— I’m on a low dose of Zepbound (a GLP1+GIP) for mcas/hEDS, and it’s been a game-changer. (2.5mg/mL, I started back in March 2026. Detailed description of my experience here.)
I no longer have constant concussion-type symptoms (which I’ve had for 5 years, debilitating levels of symptoms) and my joints don’t go out of place as much because the inflammation has gone waaay down. Also pretty minimal side effects, and my weight just went down to the weight I was stable at for 10 years before a migraine med (that didn’t even help the migraines) made me temporarily hypothyroid a couple years ago. I basically fluctuated in a ten pound range for a decade without any conscious effort, and now I’m back to that point. (And my thyroid markers are back to what they were before the migraine med. Topiramate was terrible for me.) I’m not “skinny”, just kind of… vaguely average sized, but that’s my normal.
It’s been a miracle drug for me that’s given me my brain back, so I don’t want people to be discouraged from it for pain/chronic illness reasons!! An MCAS study found that no one in their (admittedly small/preliminary) n=30 study became underweight in it and suggested it’s more of a “weight normalizing” med than a “weight loss” med.
The weight loss hype is obscuring the medical benefits and also the weight loss dosage protocol is terrible (they go up in dose so fast!). If you stay on the lowest effective dose (or even microdose if that’s an option for you, tho that generally requires paying out of pocket), it has way fewer side effects. Tirzapetide (eg zepbound) also seems better tolerated and more effective for the chronic illnesses it helps (basically any condition that involves chronic inflammation) than semaglutide (eg ozempic).
Conditions it seems to help with:
Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease (+ other thyroid issues) - this review goes a bit more in depth about GLP1’s immunomodulation and inflammation regulation effects
Rheumatoid arthritis (improved arthritis symptoms independent of weight loss)
Migraine
MCAS
PCOS / PMOS
Addiction and substance abuse
Multiple sclerosis (including remyelination - the remyelination study was on rodents, but I’ve seen a ton of MS patients talking on Reddit about how after being on a glp1 for a while, their imaging showed remyelination, which is wild to me), and here’s one on physical activity of MS patients on glp1. (There are a looot more studies on MS and glp1s, MS has had more research in this area for longer than a lot of others.)
Lupus
Long COVID (preliminary study, but there’s currently an n=1000 study in the works that should be out next year)
Neurodegenerative conditions (mostly neuroprotective, iirc it doesn’t reverse the effects of existing Alzheimer’s/dementia, but it has shown some evidence of improving cognition in Alzheimer’s patients)
probably some I’m forgetting (eg anecdotal reports of it helping with OCD, PTSD, etc, which makes sense because of how trauma and inflammation and the immune system are linked). Basically any time I think of a condition that involves chronic inflammation, I do a search to see if someone’s studied it re glp1s yet, and usually the answer is yes.
ETA: I should probably mention the on-label/approved uses like liver disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular risks.
A lot of these studies were done before the pharmaceutical companies got involved, it’s a lot of practitioners (esp rheumatologists) seeing their patients’ symptoms drastically improve on a GLP1 another doctor (like a pcp) prescribed for diabetes or weight loss or the like, and doing case studies or collaborating with universities for small preliminary studies over the past 5+ years.
Larger studies will probably have more pharm funding, now that the pharm companies are aware of these possibilities. but if it gets us on-label approval for using these meds to treat the above conditions and have them covered by insurance, I’m not gonna complain.
…the downside: if you’re using these meds for chronic health issues and you talk about the symptom improvement on a glp1 related forum, everyone tries to say it’s because of the weight loss. Even when the symptom relief happened within hours of your first dose. 9_9 it’s maddening. And disturbing. It says how much people have internalized this belief that “your health issues are because of your weight” even when that’s… often not the case. (Often it’s the other way around!)
the poster that this incredible illustration is based on is extremely striking. but while searching for it, I also found earlier posters for conveying this message along with a corresponding one for summer, and I fucking love them. absolutely lovely graphic design work. (both are from 1924, artist is Austin Cooper)
the one I was looking for originally also has a summer variant. (artist is Frederick Charles Herrick: 'it is warmer below' is from 1927, 'it is cooler below' is 1926)
I also like Edward McKnight Kauffer’s London Underground posters, the 1923 Natural History Museum one is such cool piece of visual art
Happy Fucking Moon Day
One of the best letters I’ve ever seen just popped up on my Facebook memories. Still makes me laugh.
As today is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, it’s a great time to revisit Dinah from Devon’s memory of this historic event. And yes, still makes me laugh.
Today is the 54th anniversary of the moon landing, but Dinah’s diary entry is still absolutely magnificent.
56th anniversary of the finest moment in human history…..and some folks landing on the moon.
We saw you from across the court and we really hate your vibe.
Wanted to redraw of this thingy I made for this fic a year ago :)
Poor Andrew, he'll have to hear about Trojans and Exy again.
Brennaolin is a small but hardy ship
I found this in my drafts from March. March!
There may not be a lot of us but damn if we don't cross-pollenate like mad.
Which is to say, "war prize Brennan" is originally the fault of @bookreaders24 and @benetnaschshugo and I am glad @bookreaders24 was willing to share.

Blessed is Loki, the mother of monsters
Blessed is Loki, father of outcasts
Blessed is Loki, the caring god who is home to those who don’t fit the norms of society
Loki, you are therefor those of us without homes, those of us who have been outcast for being queer, those of us who have known nothing but hate and discrimination.
Loki, may you continue to gather those of us that need you. May you continue to help us find who we are and not be afraid to speak out against the evil and unfairness in the world
Blessed be, followers and children of Loki

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.
just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.
i have asthma & keep one of these running in my room perpetually. after I set it up the difference in my sleep quality was pretty much night and day. Dont waste your time on proprietary air filters; SIMPLY bust out the duct tape
As someone who is both trans and has a child, absolutely hilarious to me that society presents one of these as absolutely only to be done if you are 110% certain and have proved to several people that you want it bad enough and are ready, and the other is like. You might as well everyone else does. Just do it nobody feels ready. You don’t want to? Yes you do
Especially since one of those is pretty reversible if you change your mind after a couple years and the other one, well, technically but that’s pretty frowned upon
going with the flow in a face down in a river kinda way

happy odyssey weekend
There would be so few people who would understand it, but man, I REALLY want someone to make a t-shirt with a little plush giraffe on it that says “Chill and Sex Positive”. It would amuse me so much and I would wear it proudly.

Is this the vibe?
