Give me someone who is a blackhole personified. That someone, no matter how hard they try, get stuck on a ending path to a point of no return and inevitably consume anyone who catches into their gravitational pull. That their destructive tendencies mold into everyday life and eventually seep into the lives of the people who are close to them. Because that is what a blackhole does. It consumes whatever gets close to them.

we're a queer and trans household of three in india, all multiply disabled, with no family safety net. we're currently in the middle of several medical flare-ups that we can no longer afford to delay.

what we're raising for:

K (51) has latent TB that may have progressed to active — she needs an HRCT scan and antibiotic course urgently. she's also managing lichen planus and osteoarthritis. this is the most time-sensitive need. (goal 1: ~$650 USD)

C (25) has POTS-dominant Long COVID, ME/CFS, asthma, and a grade 3 meniscus tear requiring surgery. without it she risks permanent joint damage. (goal 2: ~$1,630 USD)

S (26) has Long COVID, ME/CFS, avascular necrosis, ADHD, autism, and is showing signs of possible Type 1 diabetes — blood sugar swings between hypo and hyperglycemia within hours, which is dangerous without monitoring supplies. (goal 3: ~$2,820 USD)

One of the things I really like about Tumblr is there seems to be a healthy appreciation for invertebrate biology here, which I don’t always see as much on other social media websites. Tumblr users overall seem to love bugs, and it’s important to me that every person who loves bugs knows the name Charles Henry Turner. If you’re not yet familiar with this man, I’m delighted to introduce you to one of the most remarkable minds ever born of this earth, and a true pioneer in the field of entomology and animal behavior.

Charles Turner was born in the United States just a few years after the end of the civil war. His brilliance was evident from the start, and after graduating valedictorian of his high school class he quickly went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in short order. While in school, Turner’s relentless curiosity became his greatest advantage. He was drawn to and fascinated by topics that were largely ignored by modern science at the time, namely the cognitive behaviors of insects and other invertebrates. While many of his colleagues believed insects to be mindless automata acting on instinct alone, Turner felt deeply that the brains of these oft overlooked animals were far more complex than the scientific community suspected. He performed extensive experiments to test his theories and found overwhelming evidence of problem solving and individualism among organisms as small as ants and spiders.

By the time Turner earned his zoology pHD in 1907 he had published dozens of papers in highly esteemed journals and had even co-authored a book. It is likely that Turner was the first African American to earn a pHD from the University of Chicago. With such a sparkling academic reputation and enormous body of research, one would expect this candidate to have no issues obtaining a professorship at a prestigious school. Though by every right Turner should have been head of science department at a top university, the systemic racism that permeated academia meant that doors a white man would have walked through were locked and bolted shut for Charles Henry Turner.

Turner did not allow this prejudice to dim in any way his blindingly bright passion for knowledge. He took a job as a high school teacher, and continued to perform and publish research on his own all while he instilled his students with a love for zoology. He published more than 70 papers in extremely respected journals and he remained passionately curious for the entirety of his life. If I tried to list here all of the incredible discoveries Turner made in his lifetime it would take me days to sufficiently express the impact he had on the field of invertebrate behavior. His experiments were so ahead of their time that entomologists today marvel at his research and wonder how much more we would know if Turner’s work had been given the attention and respect of other scientists working at the time. Turner’s mind was about a century ahead of those entomological contemporaries who had no interest in giving him a seat at the table. His tombstone simply reads “scientist”

Like many people of color throughout history, Turner’s exceptional contributions to our world have been unfairly overlooked by many. His name has historically been left out of entomology textbooks and courses, despite laying down groundwork that is still used today. I really recommend that anyone interested in entomology or even biology in general read up on Charles Henry Turner and his works. This is an excellent article that discusses his many challenges and triumphs in the field.

As someone who gets a LOT of these sorts of notes, I would like folks to consider this, henceforth.

From now on, every time someone says "this ____ is racist", and you feel the need to counter with "well to be fair, ____" I want you to:

1) Pause.

Take a breath! You do NOT have to respond immediately, or at all! Did you understand what was written? Do you understand why the person who experienced what they believed was racism feels that way? Do you recognize that racism is never fair?

2) Ask yourself why you feel the need to defend against this sentiment.

Is it personal? Is it because you've seen it in your own behavior, or perhaps a friend's? Are you worried that one day you might do this thing, or enjoy this thing? Is it about your entertainment? Did you offer this much grace to the potential victim before you began to invalidate their experience? Does this happen often? Do you fight against racism as often as you find yourself disagreeing when something is?

3) Can you accept what it means if you are objectively proven wrong?

If you disagree or want to "provide the benefit of the doubt", and you are proven incorrect- are you willing to accept that you have been racist? Are you willing to accept that people essentially saw you being racist for racism's sake? And may not feel safe around you anymore? Does it even matter to you? Is that who you want to be?

It happens endlessly where people want so badly to defend either themselves or some imaginary person they could potentially be, that they don't see who they're being right now. You want to advocate for the Devil, but you don't appreciate being treated like the Devil you're representing!

I'm not saying never question anything. Far from it! Not everybody is right, trust me. But I feel like y'all be so ready to respond, and for what? Y'all be so ready to debate someone's lived reality, and then are insulted when they don't trust you! I guess my point is to think before you speak. If you aren't sure, ask questions or do your own research. Approach to understand, not to respond.

I am kind of wary posting this because a lot of people are weird around addiction in some way or another but here are tropes regarding it that I enjoy.

- when the addict Knows they have a problem. I see the “I don’t have a problem I can stop whenever” and I feel like this works in certain contexts but it can get tiring because it’s not like addicts all fall under universally needing someone else to tell them they’ve got a problem and save them, sometimes someone knows but can’t stop because addiction is a horrible thing that digs it’s hooks into you and makes it ungodly hard to escape (without proper support, and even with it. people backslide.)

- when people use the addiction against the addict as an indicator of moral authority or some kind of “you don’t know what’s good for you” thing. I like it when this comes from a place of genuine care and concern but it hurts and isolates the addict even more because that treatment is cruel.

- when addiction is shown to hurt people around the addict as well, (and those people ultimately distance themselves or go no contact for their own sake) and the addict is aware of this and is desperately trying to do something about it as hard as that is.

- addition to above, when the people around the addict know that recovery takes time and patience and all of this will be a messy and horrible process but they don’t abandon them to the wind and give them the support they need (even if the addict themselves is wary of it).

- crueler; when an abuser (or multiple!!) in addict’s life use their addiction as a method of control, like they’re the ones supplying whatever substance it is, or sabotaging addict when they’re trying to get clean by using around them or leaving the drugs in a place addict will see and will not be able to stop themselves as hard as they try. I like when the abuser is the one encouraging the addict to get worse and/or preying on their already shit situation to insert themselves as the only person there for addict.

- systemic abuse of addicts + subsequent distrust. I don’t really have much more to add to this but if every system that addict has tried is at best incompetent/inaccessible and at worst actively detrimental to them then it’s kind of a no brainer that they wouldn’t trust anyone to help or understand them.
