the agent was used to bustling cities, vast criminal networks & flying across the world. this lead however, didn’t involve his usual antics. he had chosen to follow some leads coming from a small town in the states. he intervened by turning over the town’s riff raff to the local police, but not leaving a card or phone number for them to find him.

a day after his arrival, he was hearing rumours which piqued his curiosity. with a hunger to investigate, he left his motel room to see a cop car waiting for him. was this about the bar fight he broke up last night? his dark brown hues looked at @corderas as they exited the car. he spoke with his british accent, clearly from out of town. “ hello officer, if it’s about the bar fight last night, i had it under control. I was showing them some british hospitality. “

he was always careful, but this time — he had left the police a note — if they needed help investigating rumours, they needed to find an agent called mirage located at this motel. he was clad in black leather, his tactical suit was safely enclosed in the tactical bag, his katana & his assortment of weapons inside. “ look officer, I won’t be in town long.. I’m investigating a couple leads here.. weapon shipments, disappearances. something doesn’t sit right with me here.. “

THE BRITISH ACCENT IS LIKE SILK ON THE EARS. especially when you've been residing in some small town, montana, for the last year or so. marisol stands before him, arms crossed in feigned disappointment. "usually folks around here leave the bar brawls to the cops," she comments with a grin pulling at the corner of her lips. "but i suppose i know now why the brawl was happening in the first place. you didn't have to say more than a couple words for me to clock the accent, and you picked a pretty ... red-blooded american town to do business in."

what she was really here for was the note he left behind. her colleagues weren't interested in following along with this apparent vigilante doing his investigation, but marisol's interest had been captured, and she was going to do a little snooping.

"we got a lot of activity up here. pretty sure there's a religious cult in the area, but they've been peaceful. mostly. as far as weapon shipments, that's awfully odd for the location. most people don't think about running guns in the middle of montana. what's your leads?"

❛  at  times  i  find  myself  wondering  "do  i  deserve  this? " ... do  i  deserve  this  life  that  i  have  been  given  while  my  family  rots  ... without  proper  graves,  i  should  have  given  them  that  much.  i  should  have.  i  led  them  astray,  there  is  no  amount  of  repenting  that  could  undo  my  sins.  ❜ [ @corderas / liked for a starter. ]

THEIR SHARED GUILT IS A CLOUD HUNG HEAVY OVER THEIR HEADS. fate was cruel. it had plans for them, bigger than any of them could have possibly imagined. there was blood on her hands. she had killed his siblings with intention, knowing there was no other way, and he had chosen to save her. marisol understands the feeling that haunts him. he was here now, with the woman who had taken their lives, like intended martyrs in the grand scheme.

and marisol still had everything. the world above them was set ablaze, cleansing fire fulfilling the voice's prophesies. but her daughter sat in her lap, playing with the ends of her hair, not understanding the weight of the words spoken between the two.

"you couldn't have know ... neither of us could've known." she speaks softly, almost in a whisper. winning her over to his cause was a hard fight, one he hadn't fully accomplished. but her eyes were opened now.

John's grin grows wide as he sees the deputy

This is his favorite part. The questioning. John loves watching them scream and try to wiggle away from him. And this delicious morsel seems to promise a good show as she thrashes against her bindings.

"Tell me, Deputy, do you think Miss Hudson has much longer?" He spins Joey's chair around to show both officers that they've been bested. Hudson looks an absolute wreck with mascara and eye liner running down her cheeks and fresh bruises on every piece of exposed skin. The mans tattooed hand curls around her throat, an action she meets with a whimper. "Do you even care?" John continues his line of questioning, dipping down to press his cheek to Joey's. "Have you ever cared about anyone?" Obviously not. She's a dirty sinner, she only cares about herself. He's sure her answer will be something stupid. A grumble about her situation or a snarky comment.

-"Everyone I have cared for has either died or left me."-

"Aw..." John pushes out his bottom lip to fake sympathy. Oh, poor baby, did all your friends leave you? No family to visit on Christmas? John stuffs down a laugh. He'll find out what she's actually been through soon enough.

"Did they? Did it hurt?" He pauses, suddenly seeming genuinely intrigued. Knife in hand, John steps around Hudson and starts towards Marisol. In one swift motion, he has her chair on its back legs and his knife at her throat. "Was it your fault?" Blade bites through her first layer of skin, sending a bead of red down her throat.

"The truth, Deputy. I'll know if you're lying."

DOES SHE EVEN CARE? that was the million dollar question. the words that followed were spoken in truth. people she cared about tended to leave her, in one way or another. even now, as she faced the brunt of the cult, she was without her daughter. before she can stomach a response to his taunts, marisol feels the blade against her throat and the warm feeling of blood trickling down into her shirt.

right now, her focus is getting joey out of this double torture situation. so maybe, just maybe, she does care. dark eyes are cast up at john as he awaits his answer, her arms struggling against the bindings that keep her strapped down into this rolling chair. her gaze is defiant despite how brutal this entire situation can turn out for the both of them. "take her out of here and i'll tell you everything," she negotiates. "i'll confess."

her gaze shifts to joey, who is looking worse for wear. marisol knows that she can't take another session with him, and so she opts to take her place. it wasn't often that the seeds got their hands on the jr. deputy. in fact, she was surprisingly good at eluding capture. but the bliss bullets did their job this time, and now they're both caught in a web.

"she doesn't need to be here." she adds. but considering their first encounter and john's valiant attempt to drown her, marisol knew that joseph wouldn't let john seed kill her. she was too important to the grand plan. and his violent tendencies would have to be stayed, if only to avoid his denial at those pearly white gates. "you can do whatever you want to me, just take her back to wherever you're keeping her. let it just be me and you."

A CLENCHED FIST IS CLUNG TO THE FRONT OF HIS VEST. they had been ambushed on the road by some cult caravan, resulting in their own vehicle tipping over into a nearby ditch. marisol had hit her head on the way down, knocking her unconscious for a few moments, but she quickly awoke in a panic to the sound of gunshots. she weaved in and out of consciousness, one moment wondering if randy was out there fighting, and another panicking from the adrenaline that coursed through her veins.

and suddenly, there was silence.

there was a taste of blood in her mouth. a small gash on her forehead was the source, bleeding more than it actually hurt. she tried focusing on that, and the feeling of someone pulling her from the wreckage. when reality slowly started to stabilize, her gaze focused on the bodies of their attackers.

"you fucked them up," she says weakly, trying to get her bearings, wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth. standing up straight seems like a challenge right now, the world was still slowly spinning as her brain tried to stabilize it, but her hand remains clung to his vest. "i thought we were dead. i thought you were dead ... and i was next. " but he had promised to get her home safe, to get through this shitshow in one piece, to help her find sofia.

IT'S EASY TO DERAIL, TO GET CAUGHT UP IN THIS FIGHT. marisol's entire world had been focused entirely on finding sofia, even it means burning everything around them. including the resistance. but now, their brains are scrambled. jacob is playing them against each other. what had once been an inseparable bond of two women suffering the same tragedy was a plot line in this slow burn of a disaster. marisol glances at her opposite with a look of indifference. crossed arms are a defense mechanism. it's harder to read each other this way.

"we only got each other," she speaks as if reading off a script. its almost instantly that she turns away, opting to dig through her backpack and sort things out. they weren't currently fighting the cult, but they had plans to take an outpost tonight. if it was as important as she assumed, they needed to be prepared. but she can't help but to feel some level of frustration over not being able to focus her entire attention on searching the whitetails for sofia, as they'd invested a substantial amount of time in the holland valley and the henbane in the past.

"you should get your shit together for tonight, sam." she adds, knowing she wasn't ready for the whole: hey are we okay? conversation.

"WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?" she responds as they hike through the rough terrain of the whitetail mountains. this was jacob seed's territory, which meant it wasn't so easy to let her guard down. dark brows are furrowed as she scans their surroundings, tense shoulders are raised high in a state of stress. lira was useful in this area. she knew the terrain better, knew the wildlife too. marisol was a southern california girl, born and raised in the city. these animals were new and unpredictable, just like the area and weather.

she leans against her walking stick as she looks back at the other woman, a curious expression taking up residence on her features. even if those words were not spoken with the intention that was received, marisol can't help but to relate to it. jacob was in her head. pulling at strings in a calculated manner. it was a miracle she hadn't sucuumbed in the manner that others had at the grandview. but she can't help but to relate lira's words to something tammy had said sometime before all of this.

"i'd like to think that ... that people can change. that they can do the impossible. but admittedly, that thinking has screwed me over more than i'm wlling to admit." she admits with a frown. and that thinking was why she was here, why she was in hope county, running away from a history that haunts her.

SHE WAS AN ANGEL, BEAUTIFUL AND GRACEFUL IN EVERY ASPECT. it was no wonder how easily the converted had fallen in line, especially when she was there with that soft smile, welcoming those who chose salvation with open arms. marisol struggles with it. that need for a sense of belonging. but the reality of the situation shakes her fixation away. her daughter was out there somewhere, hopefully still alive, and eden's gate was getting in the way.

marisol had fought valiantly against the allure and promises of love. she had muted the hymns faith had written, blocking out any attempts at appealing to her more human side. instead, she opted to line up a bunch of explosives to the road and detonated it when supply trucks traveled through. anything to cull their resources, anything to give her a headstart.

she hears her voice, sweet as honey, and glances to its origin. this was just a small hit to eden's gate, but it was the message it sent that spoke volumes. "maybe," she responds, nonchalant. "depends on how you want to interpret it." the detonator clips to the back pocket of her jeans as she moves with intention. "maybe it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with joseph."

THE WOUND IS STILL FRESH. like an injured animal, she licks away at it, hoping to self soothe, with no right to do so. faith seed didn't have to die. marisol knew that. she was just a girl, seemingly caught in the mix of this chaos, swept away by the allure of joseph seed's promises. in that sense, they could have understood each other. maybe in another life. but forced hands commit the world's atrocities and now her hands are stained crimson.

jacob was the last puzzle piece. the final nail in the coffin. he was stronger than the other two, more calculated in how his mind worked. he could run this show by himself, if he wanted it, but he didn't seem the religious zealot type. either way, it wasn't going to be an easy fight. and to be honest, she didn't know if she had the strength to do it.

she stands before him, uncaged unlike the others. it wasn't going to end here. they both knew that. instead, they've resigned themselves to play this game of chess. marisol's gaze is steady, unwilling to show the weakness that settles inside of her. but these last few months have eaten away at her, left her beaten and scarred and marked with sin. "you could try," she responds with feigned confidence. "she certainly did."
