You are not falling behind. If you haven't touched your WIP in weeks, if you haven't come up with a new idea, if you haven't gotten your book done and it's been 3 years, it's okay. You are not falling behind. Unless we are obligated to reach a deadline, we begin to believe that we are failing. We see countless people finishing their projects, selling their books, succeeding in the field you're in. And it's hard not to compare yourself to them, you're similar but they are doing the work, and you haven't written a paragraph in over a month.

Comparing yourself to others is a downward spiral that will never give you satisfaction. It's a difficult thing to try and overcome or ignore, but you have to. Instead of seeing other people's victories as a failure on your side, try and see them as goals. Goals to reach, inspiration to get back to your WIP, write that paragraph, or finally try and finish that book.

There is no secret that they know, and you don't. They aren't worse or better than you. There is no right answer. No finish line you need to cross. You work at your own pace, create goals to strive to and try not to compare your progress to others. Enjoy the process!

no, the underrated gem is the “sheep and a dying wolf” trope where the sheep finds a wounded wolf and decides to help nurse it back to health, out of sympathy, despite all the horror and the violence the sheep knows the wolf has done and is capable of once it’s healed. but deep down, the sheep also knows the wolf hunts and maims and kills only to survive. for the sheep’s friends, the wolf is a monster who deserves to die a slow and painful death. but for the wolf — and maybe for the kind sheep too — the wolf’s violence is only a means to survive in this world that has deemed it a cruel, mindless monster. the wolf, despite its pride, accepts the sheep’s help. and slowly the wolf finds itself unable to kill the sheep who saves its life, despite having regained its full health and strength. for some reason the wolf wants to protect and shelter the sheep the way the sheep has protected and sheltered it when it was left to die from the wounds it sustained from the fight it’s lost. maybe it really does take so much violence to be this gentle.

when I say enemies to lovers, this will always be one of the things I think about besides the homoerotic tension.

writing in the middle of the night is always such a gamble. who knows what I'll come up with? a masterpiece, so gut-wrenchingly beautiful that it'll leave you questioning the meaning of life? indecipherable gibberish, sentences so oddly structured that there's no way to tell where tf I was trying to go with them? best of luck to future me, she's gonna have one hell of a time finding out.

I wanted to write today… but my brain said, “Nope.” Not sure if it’s a motivation issue or just good old-fashioned writer’s block, but either way—progress needed to happen.

So, I cheated (but like, in a totally productive way). I followed my plot outline and wrote just the dialogue. No fancy descriptions, no deep internal monologues—just vibes and conversation. And you know what? It worked.

I once said that the only job of the first draft is to exist. A skeletal scene with dialogue and the barest hint of description? Totally fine. That’s what the second draft is for. Future Me can deal with the details—Current Me just needs to keep the story moving.

Sometimes taking breaks from writing can be just as important as writing itself. Clear your mind. Sleep on it. Take a walk and get some fresh air. Hydrate (you know who you are). When you turn writing into a chore to get through, whether it's a daily wordcount quota or an amount of hours you allocate to writing each day, you set yourself up for burnout and corner-cutting. It's great to have a creative routine and to make art whenever you can, just be mindful that you aren't settling. Forcing yourself to hit quotas can make lazy and uninspired writing an acceptable standard if you aren't careful.
