Adulthood
I opened a stock trading account the last night. I bought 45 shares in two different companies on my first day I earned 23 dollars. Part of me, the adult part, says wait a few paychecks and split your money evenly between slow growth stocks and high risk stocks. The other half of me, the inner 17 year old, is going CASH OUT BRO WE'RE HAVING PIZZA AND A 6 PACK!

First rejection letter!

a warm port
I'm a long boat on stormy seas tossed by wind and wave of every sort and though I pass many more like me i'm seeking my warm safe port for adventure is a fine thing for a man of youth and strength upon the see I'm my own king and i find my own world at length But going and coming are hard on a soul knowing that long he cannot stay and as gentle or fierce as the waves may roll I look for a home port today a warm port with gentle shores where my long boat may dock a place for me to tie my moors where pier side I may rock

On my time in Bagram
Recreate the Bagram Experience Work 7 days a week with one "half day" which will inevitably be spent at a crowded bazaar. During the day turn your heat up to the highest setting possible at night turn the AC to the lowest setting possible. Every 20 minutes have a large truck and a V8 sports car with no muffler drive by your bedroom window. Every two weeks have your neighbor fire bottle rockets at your house and wake everyone up for it. Hide in the basement with a pot on your head and a couch cushion on your chest until the all clear is given. Every three weeks forget to wake up one of the people in your house and then tell them the next morning. Serve the same patties as Sausage for breakfast, hamburger for lunch and veal Parmesan for dinner. When asked why answer "Pakistan closed the border again" use a remote control helicopter to drop water balloons on unsuspecting neighbors. Claim you thought they were terrorists. wear a reflective belt at all times after dark. chastise any who do not. Work out obsessively for hours a day then eat 6 Cliff bars because, shit you got nothing better to do. Go to a strange market and haggle for things you wouldn't otherwise buy. Only download movies from the worst torrent feeds and watch them incessantly. Freeze all fruit in your house and only half thaw it before you serve it> Stock your fridge full of Rip-its and Odoulls keep a room in your house stocked as a PX but only keep size XS and 3XL tshirts and underwear. Also food is limited to mustard and sardines. Claim that showers should only be taken once every other day for water conservation. Have random Filipino and Balkan people use your bathroom at odd times at night. Have the Filipinos use water bottles as improvised bidets with little regard to where the water goes. Every two months have someone defecate in the shower. Keep a broom with you at all times, keep its bristles clean and its paint from chipping but never sweep with it(rifle)

Stop worrying
Stop worrying I've heard Heaven described as the sun in the sky a bright shining place full of clouds where the angels all sing and the bells the all ring and there's nothing but joyful sounds I've heard Hell is a place full of fire and pain where there's gnashing and slashing all day and the souls down there long for the touch of rain and for some it's the only reason to pray But Heaven and Hell are not what you think though they may yet be a place I don't know i can show you a vision off both now, don't blink for this is one hell of a show Heaven is a tired man on a hot highway being offered a ride down the road and the sound of a voice saying "I'll listen you talk, let me help you carry your load" it's the look in the eyes of an old man who just saw his family before he passed on it's the hope of a town as the workers arrive to rebuild after a terrible storm Hell is sitting at home in a house full of things with nothing but the sound of the vents and hell is the hunger that comes form working too hard to make back all the money you spent and hell is the man who has no one to love to listen and tell him he's loved and hell is the rich man who dies alone in his vault knowing exactly what he had gave up Heaven is and will always be the joining of souls in love like children we look to each other to show that we know the command from above treat everyone like he's a brother and hell is abandonment alone in the dark away from the warmth of the home a cold wet bench in a city park and a life spent cold and alone so, don't worry about angels dancing on pins or whether the prophet would let you smoke weed your real path to heaven always begins when you reach out to someone in need
On God, Religion and morals
So as much as a poet travels the realms of human experience religion is always a stop on the way. Some people spend longer there than other and some take along some things for the ride. Hell some people trade in their hot rods for church vans. I've been thinking about something I read the other day. Paraphrased, poorly at that mind you, it started with the question "if there was a God, for certain, would you act differently than you do?" I had to think about that long and hard. We're often very blind to our own vices so of course many of us would say "No". But is that true? The thought about what religion's role in my life is popping up quite often these days. I should think it has something to do with my life changing circumstances and that's not surprising. What does religion, at the most base level do?
Provide meaning to our lives Provide a code of acceptable individual behaviour Provide rules for civilizations Ok, that's all well and good Corner, we get that. 10 commandments and all that jazz. Oh, but do you really get it. Let's take a look at the 10 commandments. They all focus you on the outside. What you shouldn't do in regards to how it impacts others. Your goal then is to be community oriented. Christ, Moses, and Muhammad were all pretty clear about where the attention should go, God. God alone. So why are we looking to others and their service if God is the focus. Luke 17:21 says roughly the kingdom of God is in all men. Again we're going to question old Corner and his midnight ramblings fine, fine! Go ahead except look at Zoroastrianism, a religion that influenced Judaism and by extension Christianity and you'll see a similar idea where good deeds keep chaos at bay. The 8 fold path is very similar in it's attempts to cling to what is right and righteous as a means to Nirvana, oneness with the universe. So what is religion? Obedience and submission to something other than yourself. Worshiping a deity is fine and brings great comfort and I will not say don't do it. True religion is service though. True religion is sacrifice. Thinking externally instead of internally. Soup kitchens and Habitat for Humanity are great but what about in our daily life? When do we just stop to comfort a grieving person, pull over and offer someone walking along the road a ride, literally give the coat off of your back to help someone stay warm? I'm not saying this as someone who is good. I am wretched, a vile ape who has only the most vague concept of a higher existence. I'm saying this as someone who wants to be truly religious. Someone who wants to see others do the same thing. We can debate how long Buddha's nails got under the Bodi tree, how deep Neptune's kingdom is under the sea, or whether Christ was bald or not. Its not important though in the face of people in our own countries and abroad who need help who need a part of God to come from us right now to them. Religion is selflessness. Heaven is oneness with the souls of the people of the world. Hell is separation from the world, selfishness.

A mop of curly brown hair a clump of messy brown waves the only evidence he was their was the sound my laughter made They closed SEARS for quite a while he gave them quite a fright his discovery was reason to smile but his bottom was sore that night a little boy with chubby cheeks and devilish handsome grin who played among the blankets peaks of the bed that he stayed in whole jar of black jelly beans consumed well out of sight he was neither heard nor seen but his tongue was black as night he loved to play but wouldn't yield to his rules you would bend buffalo didn't live in a fenced field to the prairie they were sent so long it's been since that child played on the dark faux wood floors it's been so long since he stayed on ran out through the doors a massive house a grumpy cat a doting family to think the product of all this is just simple old me mother's hair is graying now my father's hair is gone my family is still their now though some have since passed on I think back to my childhood i think about those days about the bad and the good and what i didn't say so now I say "Thank you" for every time i missed I wish to say i love you for every hug and kiss So long ago it seems a day some short a time as this i long to hear some people say c'mere gimme a kiss Ah Christ that I could travel about a silken sea and that I could just marvel at the way things used to be
Whiskey
I've written about whiskey at www.facebook.com/cornerstonepoetry before. It's no surprise to me that it should come up again. Especially on a cold and windy night such as this. I am loving this chill in the air. I had the oppourtunity to sit and have a look through an old photo album and nearly bring myself to tears. Instead i had a glass of Tullamore Dew and some cheese and toast. I'm very happy with the results. I can feel myself drifting into what I can tell will be a nice sleep. Winter is coming, that's not a bad thing.

My country home
I've lived in rural Georgia now for 3 years. When I purchased my land I had no idea what I was getting into. I have spent thousands on equipment, animals, feed and a host of other assorted things that go along with trying to start your own farm. I'm about to leave that farm for 3 or 4 years and I'm waxing nostalgic. As I said memory is want you want to remember but I'll take time to remember the good here. I will remember picking blackberries with my children, pecans and grapes. I will remember lambs born and eaten as well as piglets. I will remember deer crashing through the brush on a cold winter morning. I will remember shooting stars and smoking with my uncle. I will remember wine made and drank in this house. Roosters sparring and geese hissing. I will remember the beginnings and endings of the seasons. The taste of goat, mutton, rabbit and horse. Beef, pork turkey and duck. The taste of my own sweat and the shaking that comes with sweating int he Georgia sun. How many hours did I sit in the classroom of the School of Hard Knocks? How many times have I been faced with the lingering questions "why, how and when"? It hardly matters, to see the fox, the opossum, the coyote and deer. To hear the doves "deka OK to" coo over the house to hear the bark of the squirrel and the song of the mockingbird the buzz of the bees in the crabapple tree in spring. It all seems worth it. It was all worth it. the bloody hands, the tears cried, the money lost. I can never say these were bad times. Just the wrong time to do them. God will forgive me, I need to forgive myself. For myopic living, for bullheadedness for the stubborn determination to tame a land I didn't have the money, power and know how to tame. I'm only sorry if I don't learn.
