coming back
it doesn’t seem like it’s been four years since i posted, but at the same time, it feels like i’ve been away for a decade. i’m struggling right now to rediscover what makes me happy outside of motherhood. going to try writing again.

OMG done!!! Now time for blocking! This yarn is Thoreau (50/50 yak/silk) by @craveyarn and it’s the SOFTEST thing ever. Can’t wait to see how much softer it gets after blocking.

The debate about breast-feeding takes place without any reference to its actual context in women’s lives. Breast-feeding exclusively is not like taking a prenatal vitamin. It is a serious time commitment that pretty much guarantees that you will not work in any meaningful way. Let’s say a baby feeds seven times a day and then a couple more times at night. That’s nine times for about a half hour each, which adds up to more than half of a working day, every day, for at least six months. This is why, when people say that breast-feeding is “free,” I want to hit them with a two-by-four. It’s only free if a woman’s time is worth nothing.
Hanna Rosin, The Case Against Breast Feeding (x)
thank you for this. on a day when it’s been painful, stressful, and tiring to try and pump breast milk for my son while working a full-time job. on a day where i feel so guilty for wanting to just sleep through one middle-of-the-night feedings because i’m just so tired. i needed to hear this.
Corpse Bride
What are you currently making?
My first sweater!
A scarf!
A Celtic Knot Dragon Shawl!
A 300 square blanket
A cover for my cargo trike made out of tablecloth fabric and pain.
That beaded capelet I posted a couple weeks ago. Because there’s nothing like lace with 5000+ beads!
Socks! And two shawls. And a cowl. And a stole.
A baby blanket, socks, a shawl, fingerless mitts and there’s a cardigan without arms somewhere around here as well.
Socks and my giant lace shawl. Mostly socks
Matching sweaters for my son + 3 nephews!
Many things on the needles, but the active project is a scarf and hat set for a friend made from yarn spun from his dog’s brushed fur. Truly a unique project.
so far the bright spot of my week has been bonding with a work mate over who we felt was the best companion of New Who. btw - it’s definitely Rory.
Reblog if you’re over 20 and still read/write fan fiction.
I’m curious!
So far over 20…
Is there a deadline?
The implications of this make me sad.
what is that supposed to mean?? That when you’re over 20 your imagination is supposed to run dry?? Oh sweet summer child, you don’t want to challenge the power of imagination of a twentysomething… thritysomething… fortysomething. It gets mor colorful than your wildest dreams.
I have the feeling that someone might have told the OP that she was too old to still be writing fic. Pfffft. Let me tell you something. Once you start writing and reading fanfiction, YOU NEVER STOP.
You will pry fic from my cold, dead, mid-20s aged hands.
Once you go fic, you never go back. I’ll be 26 next week. B)
33 and reading. How could you stop, when you realize that fanfic is superior to so many published novels our there AND FREE?
ok, shit, i guess i have to do it. I am over 40… I still don’t believe it myself. And I have never written/read as much fic as I have in the past year.
Always remember that our culture discourages adult women from doing things for their own enjoyment. Adult women are meant to spend their leisure time caring for men and children and doing labour to make themselves look more attractive.
Reading and writing fanfiction is something women do only to please themselves. Adult women pleasing themselves is dangerous to a society that relies upon the unpaid labour of women.
I am 42.
Reading and writing.
I’d go so far as to characterize fandom for adult women as a kind of rebellion. For the most part, society allows men to play with their fannish loves their whole lives–whether that means collecting comic books or painting themselves team colors and game day. Women, however, are supposed to “grow out of” purely having fun–particularly when that fun is primarily created and consumed by and with other women.
Also, fandom is a leisure pursuit where women of all ages frequently interact (whether we know it or not)–which is too rare. We openly admit to *just goofing off* in order to enjoy ourselves – and do you realize how rare that is for women to speak about in our culture, much less embrace? Even in social media posts about being lazy, we’re supposed to be putting ourselves down, to some degree, but in fandom, spending the whole day writing or reading fic is something to be celebrated. It’s awesome.
Oh, and I’m 45.
39, and I don’t plan to stop reading or writing fanfic anytime soon.
Darlings. I did not START reading/writing fanfic until I was in my 40s. I was 43 when I posted my first story. At the time, I had 13 YO, 11 YO, and 9 YO daughters. I had promised myself that I would raise them to be Unashamedly Themselves. I worked hard at it. I spent 13 years trying to be the sort of parent, the kind of adult, that I’d never had in my life.
13 years before I was able to give myself the SAME EXACT PERMISSION.
Yachtzee63 is so right. We’re expected to ‘give up childish things’.
in 2012, I was a pretty good Mom. But I wasn’t a very good Kestrel. In 2015, I can honestly say that I am SO MUCH better at all those things I’m ‘supposed’ to be doing, because I have spent the past three years trying to FLY.
Over 40, I have teen & YA children, and just discovered fanfic 10 months ago. My life was pretty much ALL work, paid and unpaid, before fanfic. I’d stopped writing and drawing close to a decade ago due to prioritizing my children over myself every time. They’re mostly-autonomous now and it’s time to do things I like to do.
36, and only JUST rediscovered fanfiction about a year and a half ago, after a 15+ year hiatus from writing it. This time I think I’m here for good.
I’m 56 and I love reading all the wonderful fanfiction. But also remember Mark Gatiss is 48 and he is writing fanfiction right now, not to mention Steve Moffat who is 53.
I am on the reading side only, but I didn’t start until I was over 30. Better late than never!
40 and I’ve been reading and/or writing fanfic since I was 15. However, my first major fandom was the X-Files. I was 18 when it first aired. And that’s when I really started reading and writing fanfic in earnest.
Reposting for all the fine commentary about how adult women are supposed to put aside “childish things” while men are encouraged to continue to be fans/collect things/have hobbies, and how it’s 100% bullshit.
I didn’t start reading/writing fanfic until after age 20. I agree that there should be no age limit on enjoying a hobby. I also taught myself to knit and spend hours doing that and am not a grandmother (I only just became a mother 3 months ago). Age is just a number after all.
More hearing people should learn some sign language so here are some actually useful signs for us hearing people to learn.
I’m just starting to teach my son baby sign language. The possibility of communication with a preverbal child is hugely attractive to me. The one thing I will note is that some of these are different in the U.S. where American Sign Language is the norm. (Toilet and Good for example).
So I don't know if you guys know this but Monterey Bay Aquarium Have Live Web Cams of some of their tanks
Monterey Bay Aquarium is hands down my favorite aquarium, and since I don’t currently live close to it anymore it’s nice to know they have live feeds of some of their exhibits including their Deep Sea tank
Their Kelp Forest
as well as many more.
The live cams are really relaxing and great if you don’t have your own aquariums to watch, or if you just want to see penguins walk around.

WHoah whoah woah WHAT you don’t even know what this means to me omg
RID YOUR VOCABULARY OF THE WORD HISPANIC
it’s a trash word with no real meaning besides a white american way of generalizing spanish speaking people but actually means SPANISH people
throw it out of your mental dictionary. immediately. it is naming us after our colonizers.
and especially if you KNOW a latinx person’s nationality you should probably always refer to them as that. for example, i am latina but i am colombian and salvadorian above all else.
i wish this post had as much traction as that inaccurate post of definitions written by a non latinx that i keep seeing on my dash
But what if I’m not latina but do have Spanish heritage? My family immigrated from Spain via Puerto Rico to New Jersey. I don’t actually speak Spanish but my grandparents do and it’s important for my medical history to reflect my hispanic ethnic categorization (because it means my height/weight ratio is appropriate regardless of BMI which is a standard based on adult white men). I’m not saying the word isn’t problematic, but I also can’t be categorized at latinx because I’m not.
I’d like the Doctor to meet Jimi Hendrix. Or have some sort of rock episode. Maybe a monster arrives on earth in the Reeperbahn with the Beatles, and the Doctor has to track it through different musical periods. Obviously Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars could be on the forefront of an alien invasion.
Peter on what period he’d like the Doctor to visit (EW interview)
