I think it's a belief sooo deply rooted it makes it difficult for other people to just let the idea go.

In my personal experience, i did say smth like "I have to love myself first if i want to love others" and it made me so fucking miserable, not only in my romantic relationships but in my friendships too, i felt so uncappable of loving them like i deserved and so unworthy that i just left them.

I know now I AM capable of having healthy loving relationships, that my depression and insecurities would not destroy it just bc i feel im not enough just bc i feel like that, i can take care of myself and i let myself be cared for others if they want to be a part of it.

I love myself most days, but when i don't, i know that doesn't make me less valuable, capable and worthy of love and affection. It does get better, but it takes time letting go of old toxic beliefs
