.practice project one: it continues, part ii
Okay, let's see looks like I left off at my fabric being cut, pressed and ready for the sewing machine.
Step 06: Unfortunately, I got a little excited once I got to bust out my sewing machine that I didn't take pictures of sewing the initial two large, front and back pieces together. My apologizes. :B
Step 07: After you've got your piece sewn together, if done right, you'll end up with the same pretty seam I've got here. (This is a close-up of one of my skirt's sides.) I could see someone with perfectionist issues blow a gasket that my pattern doesn't line up, I've seen that on Project Runway anyway, but this looks just dandy to me.
Step 08: Pin the casing piece along the top edge of your skirt so it's ready for sewin'. I think the hardest part here was carefully lining things up so it didn't look wonky.
Step 09: Now sew! Seriously, I love sewing, especially with my machine, but I can't seem to be able to sew in a straight like to save my life. I assume this is something that comes with time.
Step 10: After the casing is sewn in place, you flip your skirt inside-out and press all the seems you just made so things look nice and clean. I didn't get a picture, but after this I also did a zig-zag stitch with my machine along the raw edges so even though it's something people won't see, it just keeps the fabric from shedding all over.
And there you have it, here's a picture of the skirt flipped right-side out, casing attached and inner seams all cleaned up. As you can see we still have raw edges to hem and some casing that needs elastic.
.just spent money at joann's and mccall's online
Let's hope this isn't money out the window. Got me some practical things and only because they were on sale; things I was going to get anyway. Two of them being clothing patterns for my Serenity gown... so this cosplay thing. It's happening.
Here is the original tutorial, that started all the other tutorials! Well, the first half of it, anyway. Part 2: [link] Weft tutorial: [link] Odango tut...
Continue onto Part II...
Her wig weft tutorial...
And lastly, check out her odango tutorial...
NONE of the Princes Serenity sleeves tutorials I found online worked that well, so I made my own. >_>; Free to reuse if you want it. This is technically for dolls, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a cosplay (if you can find big enough ribbon / pad the ribbon with something.) The ribbon in the sleeves on the Princess Serenity custom doll was actually folded in thirds, and then folded over in half: they ended up being much thicker and only 1/6th as wide as the original ribbon. Honestly, using that same ribbon (but padding it a bit) would probably have worked for a human cosplay...
Honestly, I've seen a lot online too and this one (as shown on a custom doll outfit she made) looks the best is completely fabric and not stiffer material that might not match the gown.
Princess Serenity's Dress - Analysis Well, I wanted to show you guys what I had in mind with those "educational" journals. ...
A few notes on the manga version of her gown I found helpful from her article:
...the dress is considered to be in empire style. Typical for this style is that the dresses were tight or closely-fitted around the torso, but would then fall loosely below.
The upper part of Serenityâs dress is interesting as it features very ornament-like accents â like the large hoops with golden accents, followed by a line of big pearls, two (sometimes three) horizontal lines, a line of what looks like triple upside-down arches, and another line of pearls.
Her large, puffy sleeves are most often considered to have also been inspired by ornaments found on ancient buildings. Some say they remind them of seashells, too.
Naoko mentioned in one of her notes (in the artbooks) that her main inspiration for this dress was found in wedding dresses. This might explain the predominant white color (other than it obviously being associated with the Moon) as well as the light material.
The material is often considered to be chiffon (made of silk), due to the transparency and flowy-ness often seen in manga images. Unlike in the anime, it tends to be quite difficult to say how many layers the dress actually has. Some claim there are two layers, some claim more. The main argument against more than two layers is the already mentioned transparency.
The large back bow is either in the same white color as the rest of the dress or with a very light blue or purplish tint.
In her Princess form in the manga she sometimes wears a crown as seen in the previous image. She always seems to wear the pearl accessories in her hair. (Three pearls on each side.) Naoko also states that on formal occasions she wears a cloak.
The earrings are another interesting element. In the original designs there are supposed to be three pearl earrings in each ear, the first and largest one of them having a sort of a silver and golden attachment to it
However, Naoko often draws Serenity wearing only TWO pearl earrings
And sometimes with only ONE
And as seen in the previous images, the attachment to the first earring has become from silver-gold to only gold
In the manga, Serenity also wears a pearl bracelet, which sometimes has golden accents, and a ring.
French Pirate, Anime Los Angeles 2008
Another original design my bestie Kitty and I put together, along with her ensemble. Anime LA is unique for having an initial nighttime party that's pirate-themed. As Kitty and I like to be as glamorous as possible, we decided to go as pirate, yes, but French-style so we could sport a beautiful mask/feather hat combo. Each item was store-bought, but the decoration on the mask was all our handy-work.

As promised, here is the tutorial for Sailor Cosmos' staff! I don't have any pictures yet of the entire staff since it's been rather icky outside lately...
Photo of ODANGO Tutorial - Step 4, uploaded by Cosplay.com member Kukkii-san.
This is the last of the series of my Princess Serenity Tutorial.  Check out Part 1 and Part 2. I liked how my shoulder puffs? came out, but I wouldnât say itâs my favorite way to make them.  I was short on time and I also didnât want to make anything complicated for this costume. Ideally I would have like to make them into stiffer round puff sleeves and more accurate.
Cosplay Project Plan One: Princess Serenity, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Manga)
So I'm thinking I should start with a cosplay that is fairly simple (sewing-wise) and one that is well-documented. There are more online tutorials than I know what to do with, which is good 'cause I'm gonna need 'em.
Ambitious? Yes, but on the scale of things I wanna cosplay, this is the simplest. :B
.how to sew tulle
Tips for sewing tulle material from mellysews.
.practice project one: it begins, part i
Time to get this hobby kick started! So begins warming up my sewing skills with a practice project.
Step 01:Â Go to Ikea and pick up a coffee table and shelf (yet to be installed) so I'd have a dedicated place to store all my sewing tools and materials in my studio apartment. After building the table, I pulled out my brother Project Runway Special Edition sewing machine and pulled together and organized all the sewing tools I presently own to take inventory of what I'll need in the future.
Step 02: Bust out the pattern I purchased ages ago (Simplicity 2286: Learn to Sew.) Gives you variations on a simple skirt with an elastic waistband. The takeaway is being able how to teach yourself to use a pattern, choosing the right size, etc.
Step 03: After reading.. okay scanning, the entire set of pattern instructions, I started with their step one: prep your fabric by pressing it and removing all those pesky creases fabric inherits from being on a bolt forever (or in this guy's case, being folded up in a box forever.)
Step 04: After carefully cutting out your required pattern pieces from the given options, pin those pieces, as described in the instructions, onto the wrong size of your fabric.
Step 04.5: Make sure doxie is resting in place and is comfortable. His name is Auto, short for Autopia, and he's the man in my life.
Step 05: Once you're all pinned, take a deep breath, double-check your work and get cutting.
Learning the Hard Way Lesson: After cutting out my fabric I realized that my bottom edges were going to be uneven, something I'm going to have to fix with hemming, and also something that could've been avoided by simply lining up the bottom edge of my pattern pieces squarely along the fold line when the instructions told me to do so.
End of evening one! The next part involved using the actual sewing machine, so I decided to call it at 11 and start up again the next day.
