in new zealand, our evil government are trying to legislate definitions of women and men, in ways that are legally incoherent but clearly trying to pave the way for more horrifically transphobic legislation. we have an election in a few months but our main opposition party, and all our mainstream news media, are so spineless and cooked that there's a good chance the ghouls will win reelection.

it took 2 whole months for local terf group 'speak up for women' to get 2,000 signatures on the petition that led to this new bill in our parliament.

it's taken five days for this pro-trans 'they don't speak for us' petition to get 17,000 signatures.

this is a show of support that is really heartening for a lot of trans people in our corner of the world.

cis/ish women, if you're from here but haven't signed yet, please do. and if you're not from here and you know any new zealanders, could you send them this petition? a full fifth of our population lives overseas, and there's a good chance they don't follow the news.

one thing I wish people understood about tumblr posts is that they are not confession booths. if you see a post calling attention to the fact some behaviour patterns may actually be racist or misogynistic or transphobic or anything else you don't actually have to go into op's replies or tags to tell them You Personally have this patterns for detailed unproblematic reasons. I can't speak for the op of every post obviously but the point is likely to make people look at themselves critically and think about why they do the things they do. and if you're capable of introspection and understand that a post does not apply to you, the correct thing is to move on. you are just not its target audience

Every time I replay Jacob's loyalty mission I'm reminded how much I dislike it.

Not just because it has so little to do with Jacob, but fundamentally.

A crashed spaceship leads to the female crew being kept as sex slaves? The local food literally turns them stupid? The same food turns women docile and men aggressive?

Ugh, and ugh, and more ugh. This was the best Bioware could do? These old, tired tropes played out the same as a story you'd find in the age of sail?

They couldn't at least put a spin on it by making the captain female and the sex slaves the men?

That wouldn't redeem the story, but at least it'd hit some different beats. Deadbeat moms appear less in stories than deadbeat dads.

Even if this was a N7 mission, I'd dislike it.

Doubly infuriating as, as @omegastation and plenty of others have argued, Jacob has a checkered past a covert operative basically pretending to be a pirate (the Corsairs) doing the kind of shady shit the Alliance needed to be able to disavow if it ever came to light — and Jacob's feelings about the experience is that there still was too much red tape, which eventually led him to join Cerberus. A loyalty mission exploring that 1) wouldn't have been horrifically racist, 2) would have been about Jacob and not his reaction to the horrific shit a family member committed, 3) would have by necessity explored the familiar tensions between Paragon and Renegade, and 4) would have provided a new thematic perspective on the Alliance and Cerberus, which was sorely needed. It was right there, and they elected to do lazy racist garbage 101 instead.

At the risk of attracting the wrong people to this blog - I think the reason why some of you get really offended when people call you, celebrities you like, organizations you support, companies you buy from, etc., zionists, is because a lot of you actually don't know what zionism is.

I think there is a preconceived notion that a zionist is someone who calls Palestinians slurs, openly supports genocide, chants death to arabs while getting their coffee or something along those lines, and granted there are a lot like this, but a zionist is someone who supports the existence of the state of Israel - and if you know your history of al-nakba, al-naksa, Palestinian land theft, settler colonialism, massacres, displacement going back over a century - you'd know why this is inherently a bad thing.

It's why statements like "I support Israel and Palestine", "I support a two-state solution", "I want peace for both sides" or "Israel and Palestine both have a right to exist" are always intrinsically zionist. Actually learn what these terms mean because some of the things I see you guys calling 'pro-Palestine' are still rooted in zionism.

Fundamentally, the reason why people like Contrapoints have trouble reconciling zionism and all that encapsulates is because she sees herself more closely to Israeli settlers than she does to Palestinians. As do many people who hold her views.

Ahed Alanqar, who is verified #624 on GazaVetters, is a wonderful friend. It's clear within moments of speaking to him that he carries a deep compassion for everyone he meets, and everything around him. The world around him has not always returned this compassion. Before the war started, Ahed owned an aluminum manufacturing workshop with his father, and a house where he lived with his family, including three young daughters. Today, he is surviving off of donations.

Ahed is devoted to his daughters, and when he speaks with me about Iman, who is seven years old, I feel his love for her like it's my own. He told me, "I swear to you, I don't know the taste of sleep, and I stay up many nights thinking about this child and how I will help her." In his own words, his family is his whole life. Iman was injured on her way to a grocery store, when a house nearby was bombed. A large stone struck her feet, causing constant pain and difficulty walking. Iman requires an open reduction and internal fixation surgery on her feet — as Ahed describes it, this is a difficult and expensive surgery, which involves inserting metal plates to hold her bones together for a year until they heal. Because of the blockade and lack of resources in Gaza, Iman must be evacuated outside of Gaza for the procedure. This would be challenging under normal circumstances, but for Ahed's family right now, it won't be possible without donations. Please share his campaign, donate what you can, and remember their story; don't let this fade away. Everyone on here can do something to help.
