If you ever, and I mean EVER think that you fucked something up royally, remember that the organizers of the 1904 Olympic marathon:

- Had zero stations for water on the 26 mile (42 km) course

- Accidentally gave North American competitor Tom Hicks a cocktail made of egg whites, brandy, and actual fucking rat poison

there’s a conversation here about how queer people who come from heavily poor, illiterate, traditional ass backgrounds have to put in fucking work to gain any real acceptance from the queer community so we’re not seen as ignorant and backwards but we also like don’t have community with our own families because of our gender and/or sexuality most times. it’s really rich that the progressive movement can acknowledge how poverty, illiteracy, religion, racial identity shape people but fully fail to understand it beyond good vs bad, enlightened vs ignorant, with us vs against us… like some of you fully cannot conceptualize a person that’s with you and on your side if they’re not exactly like you or deeply apologetic about where they came from because you look down on it. but i don’t really want to have that conversation with y’all.

would you be utterly shocked to learn that the US loosened the rules on allowing fascists into the military during the war on terror?

Once the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan were in full swing, the United States had a huge army in Iraq and a smaller but still significant one in Afghanistan, and it could not recruit or retain enough troops to staff both. Rather than reinstate the draft as in Vietnam, they looked for another solution.

There was serious discussion in 2005 and 2006 about bringing back conscription. A “Reinstate the Draft” bill went into Congress because there was broad recognition that the military was breaking and needed more bodies. Rumsfeld dismissed that option. George W. Bush said he would have vetoed it if it passed, and in the end it didn’t. They were haunted by the memory of Vietnam and the role the draft played in turning the US public against that war and forcing withdrawal in 1973.

With the Iraq war already unpopular, they feared a draft would be the final straw. So, rather than conscription, they dismantled regulations built up since Vietnam. Some of this was public. They raised the enlistment age from thirty-five to forty-two. They loosened rules on body weight so heavier people could sign up.

What I wanted to investigate was the groups they were not advertising, the ones being quietly enfranchised by this new free-for-all that the Pentagon was embarrassed about and trying to hide. The first and most obvious were neo-Nazis and white supremacists. Over three decades, the military had put in place specific rules to keep such people out. The reasons were straightforward. Sending neo-Nazis and white supremacists into a country of mostly brown people with automatic weapons is not going to end well. Those same people then come back to the United States or serve on domestic bases. They are often highly violent, with an accelerationist, sometimes openly terroristic outlook, and they can turn US-funded training into a resource for what they call a “racial holy war” at home.

Those protective regulations were effectively switched off. When I started talking to neo-Nazis and their organizations, they all told me the same thing: “We have never had it this good in the US military. We can get in with swastikas, we can get in with SS bolts.” That was the starting point for a yearslong investigation.

I found they were not just being tolerated; some were promoted. One of the central figures in the book is Forrest Fogarty, who served in Iraq in 2004–5. He is an American History X–style neo-Nazi, completely open about his politics. When I met him, he told me that his commanders all knew he was a Nazi and liked it. They sent him on the hardest missions because they thought he was “hardcore.”

i dont even want TES 6 anymore. its going to be a generational disappointment that will cost at least 50 dollars, wont be available in physical disk form and be one billion terabytes for the privilege of a fishing minigame that doesnt work and ten fewer skills than skyrim offered us.

the more i think about it the more im like. who is the promise of TES 6 for? They didn't have to tell us a decade ago that they were planning on making it. They didn't have to release a trailer that teased absolutely nothing but the name. Who is this game even going to be for?

are they going to fix the problems with skyrim and eso? why don't they fix the problems with eso in eso? is it for the dedicated fans who buy every version of skyrim for every console? is it for the lore buffs who point out the inconsistency in the games that even "dragon break" can't answer? is it for the casual gamer to drop a day of minimum wage earnings on?

where could someone even buy it if not physically? on steam? on xbox digital services? would they own the game, or would it be a subscription? is the platform its played on a subscription? Who is this game for? how can people play it? how can it even get made, when theyre laying off every important member of the Zenimax team? how much money is going into it? how much money will be spent on it? how much can a consumer gain from it?

I say this with much love, as someone with a Morrowind profile picture and a Morrowind username. TES is a franchise that deserves a dignified conclusion to its releases. Promising a sixth game for over ten years only to focus on the microtransaction ridden massively multiplayer online game is such a cash-grabby way to do it.

not to mention being caught plagiarizing its fans, laying off writers and artists, releasing and re-releasing the same game for more money every year, narrowing down the fandom at large to people who can afford the games and dlcs and subscriptions? if there even is a sixth game, what could it possibly offer that would make it worth the cost to play it?

Who is this game going to be for? Will they even enjoy it?
