Hey,

I used to have a blog here for a time in my life when I really shitty mental health, apparently it got “bitten by termites”.

So, since I’m doing much better nowadays, I figured I’d give myself a fresh start on here in different regions of this website.

I’m mainly gonna repost shit I like or find interesting.

I’ll probably still talk about my struggles though, so just in case:

Ok like. Imagine life without ads. You wake up, check your messages across a variety of apps, no ads. You get up and put on the tv while you prep your breakfast, no ads. Maybe you drive somewhere and switch on the radio, no ads. Maybe you drive a long distance, yet somehow, not a single billboard on your path. You pick up a newspaper or magazine to pass the time, no advertisements only articles. You turn on your game console, the home screen is just about your games, no ads to buy more. You open a streaming app, you don't pay extra for no ads, there's just no ads ever.

Think about how much of your time is spent looking at ads. "Download ublock" yeah I know, I have. But that doesn't change that the world is covered with endless advertising. Imagine never seeing that again. How much better our lives would be.

I've seen "fuck the beauty industrial complex" posts about complicated skincare regimens and am 100% with them except sometimes they mention sunscreen and no. no. absolutely not. sunscreen is a wonderful supportive friend who wants to keep you safe, and you should let her do it. throw out all your other cosmetics and skincare products if you want, but keep your sunscreen. and if you're not wearing sunscreen, start wearing it!!!! this is not about terror of aging, this is not about every tiny imperfection our fucked-up culture has made you feel insecure about, this is about protecting yourself from skin cancer. wear the damn sunscreen.

Also, don't follow that pop science idea of black/brown people not needing sunscreen, please. Save yourselves. Because while melanin is [PT: is] a protection from UV rays, you can still very much get skin cancer. And the darker the skin, the less doctors are taught how to see skin cancer. So it's way more common for y'all to be left with it with no diagnosis. Making it easier to have it reach its latest stages with no treatment, and end up dead.

This is especially important with these heat waves we've been seeing. Heat strokes are at an all time high. Protect yourselves.

I was volunteering as a safe stop in a convention, with some prevention health equipment, and in 2 days in a very small venue we had 8 heat strokes that ended up in the ambulance.

Be safe. Use sunscreen.

In addition: if you know which spf you need, how often you have to reapply etc and have started a new medication since last summer: PLEASE check if the medication increases sun sensitivity, there are quite a few that do.

I used to not burn extremely quickly and I now sometimes start to get a sunburn after 5-10 minutes unprotected in the sun, I now have to use spf 50 or 50+ whenever it’s just a bit sunny (you can also get sunburn in the shade btw, don’t be fooled and think you don’t need sunscreen there)

If you’re unsure if you should already reapply your sunscreen: better “too early” than too late.

It’s even better if you cover your skin so it’s not or less exposed to the sun, depending on the fabric you should still apply sunscreen regardless.

If you have tattoos and/or scars make sure to always use spf 50 or higher on them and reapply regularly.

If you hate the sensory aspect try different kinds and brands of sunscreen. There are ones that smell less, ones that dry quickly, non greasing ones, ones that leave less residue on your skin, ones that come as a spray or a stick etc. I also hate the feeling of sunscreen but I found sunscreens that are more bearable for me and I hate sunburn and skin cancer more.

Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.  The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!  I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! In school I got compared to Homer Simpson and Patrick a lot because them being portrayed as lesser than and as funny for having perceived intellectual, cognitive, etc differences like this

When media, especially kids media, wants a comedic character, it often resorts to these charicatures of a disabled person. When media wants a character to look like they've done something 'stupid', they use these stereotypical expressions

It seems like just a fun silly thing for the kids, but they end up comparing this exposure to disabled in real life who exhibit some of these traits, and assume in turn that they're comedic relief and that it's okay to laugh at them and that they're just as 'hilariously stupid' as these characters

When does the anger stop? When did you learn to read how queer people have been treated without wanting revenge? I still want revenge

I don't know that it does. I wish I had a more comforting answer, but anything else would be a lie. There are genuinely parts of queer history that I avoid learning about because I know how much anger and grief it will awaken within me.

My editor has taken me aside before and told me that I have been writing too many articles with sad endings and I need to remind myself of the beauty in queer history. In that act of care, I think there is an answer for you. It isn't about stopping -- it's about balancing it.

I have these waves of hurt that hit me when I think of certain stories, and I believe a part of my role in the queer community is feeling those feelings fully. Wanting revenge, mourning, even hating, for the people who didn't have a chance to defend themselves, for the people who were so sure that they were wrong that they never even considered protecting themselves.

But there were also people who were happy. There were happy moments in the tragedy, and there is always love braided into these stories. I guess my advice is to let the anger unlock the other emotions. If you love them enough to be angry for the hurt they endured, you love them enough to be happy for their successes, to see the beauty mixed in with all the ugly.
