July was a great month for books - I even got to read about styles! I’ve been an #ApfelFan, but this reading solidified my love for this #GeriatricStarlet. • • • @Iris.Apfel shares, “I’m just as happy to wear bangles that cost me three dollars as I am to wear valuable pieces - and I like to mix high and low, putting things together to wear as the spirit moves me. [...] It’s better to be happy than well dressed.” She also gives life advice on marriage, on living a long life, on using your brain. 🧠 • • • Judging by my #JewelryCollection, you might think I need more bangles, but you’d be wrong. “The worst fashion faux pas is looking in the mirror and seeing somebody else.” I want to find my style (kinda like finding my brand @ourtravelpassport), and that means getting to know myself. “You have to know yourself before you can find your own style. If I tell you what to do, it’s not your style anymore. It’s mine. Your style has to come from you. Style cannot be bought or learned - it’s in your DNA. Is #WeddingWednesday a thing? You can have a spiffy, personalized shopping bag made in no time - just pay for shipping. It takes a tremendous amount of water and natural resources to make new clothes. That dress you looked so amazing in but only wore once can be rented from @RentTheRunway or @LeTote. That trendy piece of jewelry that is so fun for one season can be rented from @RocksBox. That closet full of beautiful clothes you’ll never wear can be consigned through @ThredUp. (I will never donate my @Werkshop leggings [pictured] unless I rip them - they are my favorite pants.) Did you know you can recycle energy bar wrappers and stationary plastic? @Terracycle makes it possible by partnering up with responsible companies, such as @ClifBar. Share your toys, swap with other parents - yes, please sanitize them, but do donate and shop secondhand. @Pokemon are not so educational after a certain age... The sun shines brightly in beautiful desert Southwest. . . . . I got to meet at 93 year old grandma, who only spoke Navajo. She was a patient in our hospital. Her daughter tells us that she herds sheep, she’s got legs so strong, doctors can tell she is active just by examining her legs. However, she fell while she was with the sheep because she couldn’t see well anymore. . . . . I’ve noticed that there aren’t enough people living on the Navajo reservation who wear sunglasses, so I went to the optometrist to ask “what could happen?” He asked me if I’ve ever seen a red growth from the corner of patients’ eyes. He said that is called “pterygium” - a diagnosis I would read as a pharmacist, but had no idea how to pronounce. (FYI, the “p” is not pronounced, “te-ˈri-jē-əm”) He said it’s something that could happen over time when people don’t wear sunglasses. Of course I also asked about the quality and colors and polarization, but none is more important WEARING sunglasses. . . . . Practice sun-safe behavior by wearing your sunglasses throughout the year, as the sun’s UV rays are always at play. . . . . “Once you have tasted the taste of sky, you will forever look up.” #LeonardodaVinci . . . . . @matteleine designed a #Perfect31st for me. We explored OUTSIDE the Moab National Parks. I played 🎻 on the mesa ⛰. I yoga’ed on the mesa at sunrise AND sunset on the same day. 🌅 🧘🏻‍♀️I made an unusual call and resolved an insurance rejection. I spoke up during an Advisory Committee call that used to scare me. I designed weekly plans using Monday.com (a powerful tool I invested in) to enhance student rotations & communication. I sold my PageHabit books on Amazon. I listed more books. WE MOVED MATT OUT OF HIS HOUSE 🏠 COMPLETELY! 💃🏻🕺🏻 . . . All of the above were outside my comfort zone. I’ve come to fear or make excuses for everything listed above. But happiness comes from solving problems. (@MarkMansonNet) Overcoming fears give me more courage. Braving the wilderness makes me realize it’s not so wild. (@BreneBrown) Tasting the sky makes me want to taste it more. What is my next challenge? #NationalWatchDay was founded by @Nordstrom to celebrate the history and design of #watchmaking. I chose to wear a watch instead of a bracelet as part of my #wedding ensemble. 👰🏻 I never liked bracelets and bangles that travel all over my forearm. It always seemed inconvenient when I want to play music or make art or go on about my day being a pharmacist. Watches on the other hand, were always made to fit my wrist. My first watch had a pink and purple elastic band, because I thought my two favorite colors looked great together as a young girl. 😅 My fondest memory of a #wristwatch was the time grandpa bought me a Snoopy watch. (I didn’t know the proper name was “Peanuts” until I met Matt!) it had a small-round-glass case, a leather strap, and Peanuts 🥜 characters printed on the watch-face. Grandpa got me a watch because I did really well on my exams that year. I wore the watch until the strap was broken, then replaced, the battery died, then replaced. Another memory I have about watches was getting a watch from one of my uncles. My aunt Clair and uncle Calvin traveled the world and bought back Swatch’s for me and my cousins. I don’t remember the exact design, but it was brightly colored, fun, and my mom told me they were high quality Swiss watches. . . . . . Nowadays I check time by pressing the home button on my iPhone. Although, I’ve been wanting a fitness tracking watch because I can’t stand the thought of moving and not having it count. 😂 The husband @matteleine surprised me with an early birthday present this year. I wore my Garmin watch proudly, until he declared I got a lemon and the GPS tracker does not work. I can’t wait to get my watch back, so I have a reason to move. 😝 . . . .
