When people look at abstract art and go "uh I could make that"

Fuck, I wish you would!

I wish you would let this inspire you. I wish that seeing a piece of abstract art would move you to self expression.

I wish you would go to the craft store, buy a cheap canvas and some cheap paint and let yourself play with color and form just to see if you can.

I wish that there were more amateur painters, trying their hand at geometric abstraction and color field painting. That would be so fucking cool.

"I could make that" should be a joyous revelation, not a snarky dismissal.

You could make that? Holy shit. please. Please make that.

Actually, while I’m here, I really liked how this lighting study of a Starship Troopers frame turned out. Started in just colored pencil but I really wasn’t happy with the cave walls and ended up overworking it, so I went over with gouache and I feel like bringing in the ultra saturated brights helped to sell the feeling of illumination

Draw badly. Write nonsensically. Embroider messily. Burn what you bake and cook. Get paint everywhere. Read half a book. Lose your mind for a bit. Plant things. Have faith in the process. Abandon 70 wood-carving projects. Get a kit and do some of it and never return to it. Get comfortable with sucking and losing motivation. Continue to create with reckless abandon.

another important thing to remember is 1) u can pick up any hobby at any point in ur life and get outstandingly good at it & 2) the project u've been working on & aren't pleased w the current outcome so far will not be your last. u will draw/crochet/paint/sculpt/write another piece, and another, and you will have many chances to be fully content w your craft. so you should cherish the joy of making art instead of worrying ab the results & think ab how lovely it is that we're all vessels for artistry and we can share the divine act of creation!!!!!

One-pagers and pamplet games are well and good, but I think as a matter of principle every tabletop RPG designer needs to have at least one game to which they've devoted vastly greater word count than the depth of its premise really warrants. You don't need to publish it, necessarily – it can be a perpetual playtest draft you never get around to actually playtesting, or even marshalling into something coherent enough to be playtested, as long as you have it. It's enriching.
