Bug Identification
hi! this is @crevicedwelling's invertebrate identification page. if you've got some little critter you don't recognize, submit an image here and I'll try my best to give you its name. ask my main blog for general questions about bugs, pet bugs, and me.
please try to get as clear of a photo as the animal will allow and if not, a very detailed description of it might work too. even if you do have a photo, include as much information about where (and maybe when) you saw it as you can. location is almost as important as the animal itself! if you aren't comfortable with me sharing its exact location, request to remove the location in your submission (this doesn't work for asks, which is why I don't have them on).
I work mainly with arthropods, but I'll take a shot at identifying really any sort of strange little creature that you ask me to. I'm very familiar with my local invertebrate fauna but am not an expert on all bugs everywhere, so I rely on data from iNaturalist and other similar resources to help me search. unfortunately, not everything you send in can be identified to species–some animals cannot be identified from an image and require a specimen, and others I can only offer a higher classification for since I don't know enough about them. if you want a 100% definite ID on something, you're better off consulting an expert.
I will not always get your ID done quickly, but I'll try to! sometimes this is because I am busy, but some bugs are really tricky to ID and will require some digging through records and literature (these are the most fun for me).
thank you for your bugs!
